    This class of ship is relatively new to the fleet but very well known in the dockyards for its many visits to correct unreliable systems. When a ships propulsion system is unreliable, the ship is too. Hopefully these issues will be rectified eventually.
    The biggest weakness of our Royal Navy, as it has been since WW2, is its size.

      We didn't need to be big because we are a NATO country working together with Europe and USA. Since this aired things have changed thx to Putin. It's a real worry because if we need to bolster up then the government will absolutely do it. The problem is then where do they make cuts? It's just bad news for the poorest people who may feel it the most.

    • @robwilton9539
      @robwilton9539 Před 19 dny +1

      @@dunki-dunki-dawg In my opinion we don't need any of these ships. Their primary NATO role, along with the American Aegis fleet, is to protect Europe from Russian missiles. No European ships have that capability. Their secondary role is fleet protection. A fleet that we would not need at all if we had food and energy security in this country and were out of NATO.
      Like Trump has said on occasion, it is time Europe put some money into defending itself rather than relying on others to do it.

    Im seeing a lot of people writing rubbish about the Type 45, so here’s what i got to say about it: (Its a bloody good ship)
    The Type 45 Sampson and S1850M Radar is far better than US SPY-1, Aster 30 has significantly higher p/k than US SM-2 and slightly higher than SM-6 (at least the earlier versions). T45 does lack the ability to take down ICBM’s and longer range Ballistic missiles (as it doesnt use SM-3), but it can shoot down SRBM and IRBM - as has been proven in Red Sea recently. It is currently undergoing upgrades, with updates to radar and missiles to enable it to shoot down longer range ballistic missiles - and in future Aster 30 Block 2 will have equivalent capabilities to SM-3. In terms of AAW destroyers, it is at the same level, and better in some respects as any ship in the world - including Arleigh burkes (although latest Flight 3 Burkes will likely be superior). It does lack some ASW capacity (Towed Array Sonar), but that is because it is somewhat useless/inefficient to have ASW kit on a non ASW optimised ship/destroyer - instead, it relies on Merlin helicopters - best ASW Helicopters in world for torpedo launches and majority of its ASW capabilities. If you want to read more into this, use this link www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/04/us-navy-royal-rn-frigate-destroyer-submarine-russia-nato/ - It’s an article by Tom Sharpe, a retired Captain on a Royal Navy Type 23 ASW Frigate talking about why the Arleigh Burke really isn’t very useful for ASW. If you want to talk about its Land attack and Anti Ship capability, this is admittedly limited - although they are currently being fitted with 8x NSM canisters which will provide them with better anti ship capabilities than Arleigh Burke for instance. In terms of the talk about them having equal capabilities to European frigates, they have the best radar on a warship in Europe, they are the largest Warship (obviously excluding Aircraft carriers and amphibious, resuplly ships etc) in Europe so have the longest range, have more VLS than every other European warship (other than French and Italian Horizon class that was codeveloped with UK in the project which eventually turned into T45 - they only have 2 each anyway) (they are also currently being fitted with 24 extra CAMM VLS to cement this lead). But naming doesnt really matter in this day and age as it differs from country to country - for instance the French call all of their warships frigates while the British define a destroyer as an anti-air platform while a frigate is an anti-submarine or general purpose platform. The US has a similar distinction to the British with the upcoming constellation cast frigate being primarily for anti-submarine warfare. The type 45 is certainly more than the Hobart class. It has better radar, more VLS (soon to be double the amount), better missiles, a longer range, better Anti-ship capabilities, more CIWS etc.
    So T45 does have some weaknesses, but it really is one of the best, if not the best AAW warship in the world. Prove to me that its not with actual points, facts and figures and i will be happy to accept/show differing evidence/debate a point, but dont jsut come here with some no research nonsense that you believe it isn’t a good warship.

      You don't know what you are talking about. The latest Arleigh Burkes are equipped with the AN/SPY-6, the most advanced ship's radar in the world. Try keeping up to date. You Brits just can't accept the fact that Britannia doesn't rule the waves and hasn't for a hundred years. The Royal Navy only has one destroyer and three frigates currently operational and deployed. Your ships are maintenance nightmares and two generations behind the US, Japan and Australia.

    The least you have to worry is the air threat at the Black Sea. Type 45 have powerfull radar, can easily spot missiles, planes, other ships etc... But whats missing from the Type 45 Destroyers? Well, yeah... Anti-Submarine or ASW... You never know whats lurking beneath the waves especially at the Black Sea. Thats Russian infested water nowadays. From Kilo-class submarines to Yasen-class submarine which carries hypersonic anti-ship missiles... You dont want to mess with them without proper anti-submarine equipement or ships.... You need an Astute-class submarine or a Type 23 Frigate next to you. The Wildcat helicopter alone is not enough.

    Wonder how aware the captain is that she’s been given the most advanced ship in the world to make a massive political statement about diversity in the British armed forces, rather than what she can/can’t do 😂😂😂

    In a ideal world the Royal Navy could do with another 2 or 3 of these.
    However the country probably cannot afford it and additionally they probably cannot get enough people to join the Navy to crew them.
    I hope I am wrong.

    We Irish depend on the Royal Navy and the RAF for our defence so I’m wondering if the ships company of HMS Duncan has ever worked alongside the Irish Naval Service?

    It is a classic frigate and proud if the nation indeed.
    2. Things to add;
    1. Building cost is way too high compare with S Korea FFX3 or FFX4 or Japanese Mogami Class. SKorean and Japanese may only have 16 cell VLS but towed array sauna, combined censor mast (X/S dual band + IRST) are definitely next gen level. Also their battletronics (battle management electronics) are far superior (at par with SPY6-9 or Arleigh Burke Flight 3 level).
    2. S Korea FFX3 currently has KVLS2 which is longer (9.8m) and wider (850mm diameter for cells). They are integrating short/ medium range ballistic missiles and supersonic cruise missile (similar to Brahmos or Yakhont). Hence the mission versatility is much broader than T45.
    What troubles me the most is the huge price tag of British warships. Mogami Class (basic ASW version) is estimated at $400-450m and SKorea FFX3 costs ca. $380-410m. T45 or any replacement would easily cost Royal Navy 50-100% more than its peers. If the high construction costs continue as it is now, Royal Navy and gov fundings will be severely depleted (which is where we are now already).
    We all salute and respect our lads who risk their lives to protect Britain and her interest overseas but we must give them the best we can. At the moment the failure at procurement is creating a permanent damage to our armed forces (e.g. RCH155!!!!).

    Most advanced destroyer in the world..? I believe that title belongs to the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000).
