The DM getting frustrated then remembering they're new and as a DM we must cherish and coddle our babies every single question is too real
True
I feel like that's a reason why I'm really hesitant to play. I'm afraid of slowing them down plus I've met some really assholes who definitely didn't help
@@J1ntu don't worry about slowing things down as long as you are engaged and interacting you'll learn pretty quick. The only one who slow things down to the point of frustration are those "players" who are on their phones until it's their turn in combat.
I dunno, never had this happen to me. I just watched live plays before I DMed. TBH, that'd teach someone to play too.
So, when do we play yahtzee with these dice?

Storytime:
I made an Inkeeper that was based on an Elementary school teacher we all know and hate. The personality, face and attitude. The only difference was that in game, she was a dwarf.
This one time, the Dragonborn Sorceress (with a +5 to strength instead of charisma for some reason) was fed up with her raising the price for everything after an argument, so she flicked her. I asked if she wants to roll for damage or just leave it as a non damaging attack. She asked to roll. Nat 20 + max 1d4 demage.
It was session two, so I fudged the Inkeeper's HP and said that she was severely injured but lived, so the players weren't executed for murder after two days. Otherwise, the Inkeeper should've been dead like 2 times over.
I think I should've let her roll for it.
My first player rape a random girl in street XD
That D20 gag legitimately happened to me in a game I was running with a new player. He was on the other side of the room each game, and or about 3 sessions he was always upset he was rolling so low, and we chalked it down to being unlucky, He never figured out why he couldn't roll above a 12. I eventually asked him about it and watched him roll initiative one time, and saw he picked up his D12. I pointed it out and he said "but this is the die I've been using for all my checks".
If you think that’s bad, I had a player thinking that they had to roll the weapon’s damage die to hit and since they use D&D beyond I had no way to tell they were rolling to hit attacks with a d4
I had a player do that, we thankfully caught it pretty quickly 😅
@@bendy2095 If you've all got characters in the same campaign on D&D Beyond then you can show a feed of everyones rolls, its been a massive help for me when I've realised people have been cheating XD I believe you can import custom characters from their profile to a campaign you can create.
It happened to me too the first time I played 🥲 Funny shenanigans ensued, but I was soooo relieved when my GM caught it and I started rolling properly xD
Had the same happen last week, but luckily I'm DMing for a group with mixed experience and one of the veterans caught it quite quickly. The player who did this is a natural in roleplaying though, so I sometimes just forget she's just as new as the other green players in the party.
When he said that the die had a 20 on it, I thought he was going to use the percentile dice and get like an 82 on insight.
I thought exactly the same thing

More or less my exact thought.
That's a thing?
it is, they look like golf balls. most people just use 2 d10s
@@8eewee Yep; in fact I recently got a dice set that has a D100, D60, D30, D24, D20, D16, D12, D10, D8, D7, D6, D5, D4, D3(I think it's that it has 6 sides but has Roman Numerals up to 3), and a Percentile die.
@@DragmaWanderer my D100 is bigger then a Golfball:)
My D60 is closest to that size though.
This is exactly what it's like but really speaks to how bad we are _teaching_ D&D rather than how bad people are at learning it.
I feel that, maybe that’s a video idea 🤔
THIS PART!!!!
It's also a testament to the design of dice... I've been playing for years now, and I *still* occasionally pick up a D12 before realizing it's not a D20 and swapping out 😂
@@IceMetalPunk I've never had this problem. A D20 is made of triangles and a D12 is made of pentagons. to me, they are completely different. But, that is just me.
@@IceMetalPunk I was always paranoid of doing that. So to this day, I still line up all my dice on the table in order, lol😅
I was suspicious about the die being a D12 when I saw it wasn't rolling as smoothly as a D20 should, not to mention the consistent low rolls😂 I laughed so hard when it turned out I was right😁
I figured the same, XD poor DM. Should have double checked the die.
My rolls were so bad on a D20 when I was playing I might as well have been rolling a d8. When I started taking 10 for everything I could my life got a LOT easier.
i honestly thought he was going to roll the d100
I feel like I must be the odd man out with d12 rolls. Mine was consistently never lower than a 5 on any use of it for my barbarian when it came to rolling HP or Great Axe damage
With new players I describe the d20 as the closest to a round dice (with a standard set) and make sure it's not the d12.
The DM being the most excited person to have a brand new player and then getting pissed at how he wants to hurt everything is the most relatable thing ever.

The DM:

I made a mini-adventure that's just a random abandoned house the players find. There are a few secret doors and the only combat encounter is a rabid rat in the basement. It's great for new players since trying to loot the house or find its owners (depending on alignment) is an obvious goal, and they are slowly introduced to new mechanics as they go along.
I made a longer adventure, still short for DnD standards, but watered it down to teach elements slowly, this way players can have a variety of environments and NPCs to interact with as well as experience a plot to help drive their motivation
I started learning D&D using simple one-shots like that too.
Actually, I was so bad at the game at my first dnd session the DM literally made homebrew mechanics to implement some of my "Creative" ideas.
Like when I rolled low while trying to "Climb" a castle wall with heavy armor.
He gave me the feat, natural born mountain man. (in any situation while climbing, gain advantage on dexterity checks)
Really great DM
First DM gave me the lucky feat for free after a few sessions. No player at the table complained.
Starting at Lv:1 with a party of 3 as a first game for them and me as the DM was probably a bad idea. But they're close to Lv:3 and got another player. They learn pretty fast. We go over rulings and combat together learning as we go. Sure, even I make mistakes.
It was a bit too late when I learned that a creature/player attacking a prone target that is within 5 feet of them is an auto crit. Luckily for the Bard, being kicked to death by a group of five Gargoyle's isn't the most heroic way to go.
@@OrangeDragon04 Prone within 5 feet doesn't mean auto-crit, it just gives the attacker advantage.
@@IceMetalPunk I think I've mistaken it for an unconscious target. I believe that's an auto-crit, isn't it?
@@OrangeDragon04 Yep, if you're unconscious and the attacker is within 5 feet of you, they get an auto-crit.
My mother is a human druid and she constantly forgets her spells, abilities, the dice, everything. We're trying to teach her.
Ooof. I try to steer new players away from full caster classes, ESPECIALLY cleric and druid because of how complicated they are. Have you tried buying/making spell cards for her? Or maybe shelling out for DnD Beyond? (It is SO NICE to be able to click on the spells on my spell list and know exactly what they do)
There are also a bunch of free dice rolling apps that clearly label dice and automatically add up the total of your rolls, making damage calculation a lot easier. Maybe see if she'd like using one of those for a while to help her learn dice types?
Good luck with your mom and don't give up! I wish my mom wanted to play D&D with me, instead of constantly dropping snide comments about how I'm not going to have time for my hobbies anymore now that I'm a "real adult". I know you're probably at least a little frustrated, but really, you're insanely lucky. You've got this!
@@cassiebattaglia1369 I suspect it largely depends on the new player. My first character was a warlock who lasted all of six sessions before dying an inglorious death. She was replaced by a druid, who definitely lasted a lot longer, until she died in the last round of combat fighting a beholder. And then my third character was a light cleric, who was maybe my favorite to play. He lasted all the way to the start of the final boss fight.
(When we started our new campaign I made a ranger, and I’ve been playing him for about a year and a half now. I’d love to say he’s survived so much longer because I’m so much better at D&D, but I’m pretty sure it’s because we’re no longer playing Tomb of Annihilation.😜)
@@FentonHardyFan oh Jesus, you should have started by saying you were playing ToA. That’s…not the best place to start as a new player, lol. Glad you stuck with it.
@@Newnodrogbob It was not an informed decision. My friend who was DMing asked if I wanted to play in his Thursday campaign, or his Saturday campaign. I picked Thursday, spent about 20 hours learning about D&D and making my first (not terribly well designed) character, and joined the ToA campaign in progress at level 5.
@@FentonHardyFan oh yeah man. I assumed you joined someone’s group in progress. Your friend did you dirty though. 😂 F that whole campaign.
I can see myself in the DM, and how I was overexcited and pushing too much onto possible new players. My wife is the new player and felt the panic lol.
Rule of thumb to all DM’s out there? TAKE THINGS SLOW with new players. Figure out the best way they learn: Audible, visual, hands on, etc. It will make your job as a DM 100x easier.
I had a simple girl and her brother being attacked by bandits on road on hero's path
Fighter tried to stealth
Rouge sneak attack the brother
The wizard acid splash the girl brother bandits and rouge and then bard asked can I start singing so they are distracted by my randomness (also was my first dnd experience as dm n dnd 🤣)
And NEVER say "you can do whatever you want" to a new players. This is so confusing what they want is to go on an adventure, railroad them a little
Tailor it to your players is almost always the best advice
I wanna play but don’t know how it works. If I where to make a character it would be a guy named joe and his weapon would be a shotgun. And that would be it.
@@jayari7674 sounds like you need some teaching and insight. There are a number of tutorial videos here on CZcams. I recommend you check them. Incidentally enough? You can make a Gunslinger Fighter with a shotgun, no kidding.
You should have included trying to cast a 3rd level spell when the character is 3rd level and trying to explain that you don't get third level spells until 5th level.
Blushing in I made this mistake and only realized it when I hit level 4.
How... how does that work?

As someone who’s first ever character was a Dragonborn this felt like a blast from the past
First one for me was a Dragonborn barbarian. So yeah I get what you’re saying.
Yep, my first was a dragonborn oath of ancients paladin. Good times
This is so accurate. My friend acts almost exactly like this. And he's the bard.
Love it. I've actually thought about building a basic DnD one shot tailored after a video game tutorial to help new players through this problem. The twist being the tutorial AI breaks free from it's program and then tries to kill the players.
That’s such an epic idea!
A new guy I was playing with kept rolling really low for attack rolls. Turns out he was rolling a d4 for attacks because that’s what the damage die was. We got suspicious when he rolled 3 natural 1s in a row
I once rolled 3 nat ones on a d20 consecutively and nearly died by falling REPEATEDLY into a fountain of a dangerous liquid (cant remember what it was) for 3 consecutive rounds.
@@sceadumor my money is on Fountain of youth
As a good training tool for new players, provide a set of dice where each die is a different color. when they ask 'which is the d20' you can just say 'the green one'
Had the same idea. I'm a dice goblin, so I let them borrow from a pile so they have color variety and some memory of what's what.
I haven't played D&D since High School and was 3.5e.
We didn't any of the books other then the Player's Handbook or any dice except D6s from a Yahtzee game, so we ended up improvising A LOT, playing it like it was a videogame almost:)
Anyway, recently been getting back into D&D properly and though I don't have a group to play with I have 6 characters and multiple proper dice already:)
Including a set of 15 Dice that each one is different, the highest a D100. Also have a Metal Dice set of 7 Dice and that one is very easy to separate the D12 from the D20, because of weight but also the numbers are raised on them so by feel can feel the 20.
Lol, hilarious, the high five cracked me up and DM having to tell the new player not to punch him
That high five. My face hurts from laughing so hard. Must have skipped back to watch that like 20+ times
"He offers you an apple"

*Re:Zero sound effect*
Soo... die in jail, restart at the point of getting swindled?
My first character ever was a tiefling paladin of vengeance. I cannot tell you the number of times that I incorrectly calculated damage because I forgot her innate fire resistance (among other things).
It's always great when in a boss fight you realize you've been using a d12 but you're doing what you're good at so you don't notice for half the fight. Obviously frustrating but also kind of funny
Wait you can use something else then a coin with nat 1 on on side nat 20 on the other ?

I was literally about to write a comment about how the true D&D newbie experience is to mistake the d12 for a d20 when the punchline hit me in the face. Brilliant! 👍😂
I thought it was going to be the tens die. Because "it has a 20 on it"
3:30 he's rolling the d12 instead of the d20
And, for every others also, didn't you see that the dice wasn't yellow ?
That negative roll cut me deep in my last session I rolled a two but because I had minus two I ended up with zero and I used my inspiration for that roll
I was forbiden from playing DnD when I was a kid because my parents were the people who thought it was evil. I am struggling SO HARD to understand the game now but this stress is the entire reason I've avoided actually going to any games or joining anyone. I'm pushing 50. I don't want to be this guy. I'm binge watching You Tube games and stalking reddit subs. I may actually try to step out and watch live/join games soon. My area has an RPG shop with live games.
This was me when I first learned D&D. I was at a workshop event where one of the classes was to learn D&D. The DM passed out pre-generated characters and I chose a human druid. Every time it was my turn to do anything I had more questions and I could tell the group was getting impatient. They did not seem to mind though as they gave me ideas and helped me with all my dice rolls and actions. I enjoyed playing that day so much. That was when I was hooked on the game.
When your first Character was an Aarokrokra Rogue, but you still relate to your DM getting annoyed at you while you try to learn the game.
As the newb I feel bad for my DM 😭 It's literally like this every session. Every session meaning all three of them. It's going great guys
A trick I do when teaching is arrange the dice from high to low (percentile gets grouped with the d10 since you only ever use it with the d10). Makes it easier for a newbie to intuit the die they need. I did this myself when I was learning.
I would love to see a part 2 of the unexperienced D&D player
"The die with the twenty on it"
"Ok...i got 57"
"How did you get that?"
"I rolled"
"You rolled the d100..."
"It says 20 on it"
Impressive, considering d100 is actually two d10s.
@@adamlatosinski5475 There is also an actual d100 not just a percentile die. It's not in the standard set, but it exists. Only roll it in an enclosed space tho as it is pretty much a ball
I felt the pain from both sides. I remember being new; and remember explaining the game to noobs.
I recently ran a one shot for my mom who is completely clueless when it comes to games. She caught on really quickly though. The thing she had problems with was the roleplay as she was not really sure what she was allowed to do thinking there was some unwritten rules you could only do certain things. The one shot was not properly designed for one person so I had my own character to guide her and nudge her in the right direction at times but mostly she was the one investigating and leading the charge. She had a ton of fun and enjoyed it quite a bit.
As someone who recently started DMing for a group of 6 brand new players, this is very relatable. No one knows whats going on. But no-one has died or really hurt any innocent people, and there have been many laughs. Cherish the newbies, everyone. Soon enough they'll turn into either murder hobos or power gamers. And then you'll wish for the good old days.
Endless dice ad, that feels appropriate.
Edit: I have met someone who is as unlucky with dice rolls as the example player. (They didn't mix up their dice they just rolled low when they needed to roll high and rolled high when they needed to roll low)
1:09 as a beginner player, this defo something i’d do
The perfect high five.
That chaotic blend of anxiety, happyness, and rage is too real 🤣
Nice video man, I can totally relate.
We just taught my best friend to play D&D a short while ago.... This video feels very familiar... Haha.
GOD the confusion about where the modifier goes and what's the point of the big number is so real. I think i had this EXACT conversation during my first time playing omg
Lol I did tons of research before my first game so I wasn’t as hopeless as this, plus watched some CZcams videos on how to play so I picked it up. My only issue was sometimes I would forget some of my abilities and not utilize them fully. I’m getting into the habit now though. I play gloomstalker and had a habit of forgetting my dread ambusher let’s me add extra damage if it’s still my first attack and I hit. That’s one of the more consistent examples. Luckily everyone I play with was very helpful so we’re happy to gently nudge me to double check wording to make sure I got full use out of my character in a turn. I really love playing with this group!
Having recently taught a bunch of newbies how to play, this is just way to real... So much stress, but so worth it
"Do I put the modifier in the big box or the little box" is probably the most asked question EVER by new players
That was surprisingly informative
Hahaha that last joke hit home...was literally trying out some dice last week and was like "Huh, this D20 is weighted horribly...I haven't rolled higher than a 12 after 30ish rolls".
It was at that point I realized I was actually rolling a D12 😅
When I was just starting out on dnd I had 1 character. I now have 15 I know true power
Love the videos man keep it up
I'm lucky to have had experience watching others play dnd and a great DM that taught the rules well.
Always fun to teach new players the game
This is so accurate, just started a D&D club at my school and basically all of this is happening (luckily minus the dice problems)
I've been playing with the same group for about 3 years and this sums up every single session
This is relatable. Great content!
0:27 uncooooomfy lol
As someone who has never played…
Yeah, I’m gonna be like that my first time.
I'm still very much a newbie. Thank goodness my husband/DM is so patient!
1:16 i see you are forgetting high school dnd sessions. Last time i walked somewhere and someone tried to talk to me, this was in a dungeon and we were sneaking in, i slugged them in the face. i later regretted this, slightly, when they morphed into a shapeshifter and tried to claw me. Hoorary for being OP and just axe criting them
I want Duke as my DM.
Fun video. Though the DM should have told him to add his proficiency to that unarmed attack.
When my friend first tried dnd, he didn’t understand roleplay yet. So after I gave a long, intricate description of the setting that set them up to figure out how to escape the cell (they were currently in a jail cell with no recollection of how they got there) his response was “I escape the cell.”
I had to show him examples of roleplay to guide him along with it and he started to get it. In this, he also saw something shiny in the nasty jail toilet and reached into the shit to grab a key to the cell that they’d just opened.
He’s awesome at roleplaying now and we play regularly :D
I HAD to stop the video at 3:00 because those 180 SECONDS ARE SO TRUE I COULD NOT WRITE IT
I never played dnd so this would be me.
This guy has some of the worst luck?!
Edit: oh I just finished it. Nevermind. It makes more sense now.
Player: so do I put the modifier in the big box or the smaller box?
DM: IT DOESN'T MATTER!
*oh it matters*
I have dice sets I allow new players to use at my table where each die is a different color and they are all the same. This really helps especially with keeping the flow going so I can say roll the d20 which is the red one.
Literally this is what i felt when I instructed my friend to D&D because he wanted to play it for the first time. He did not listen well (because he never does lol) and he just looked at his phone for memes on google. Me and my other friends told him to actually play serious after he chose to become an attack helicopter instead of a male or female. This could be the most accurate video of D&D I have ever seen...
My first game, dm does an amazing job setting the scene, he looks at us and asks that question. The table got quiet and little newbie me said, "Do we roll for initiative?"
The entire group loses it laughing then they realize it was a legit question and laugh even harder.
It clicked a moment later that DND is simply make-believe with some dice. Fell in love with the game instantly, and now I'm a forever DM.
I played my very first dnd campaign today with a newbie friendly discord group. Even though compared to the other players I was very inexperienced and making mistakes they were so patient and nice to me. I was terrible in battles and my roleplaying was quite clumsy, but I had fun anyway. I love when dms and players alike are so patient with new players.
The best way to introduce a new player is to make a session a dream where there are no characters no rules and show them how it works but that’s what I did, once, because I only played once
i had my first ever session a week ago and i can confirm it did indeed look like that, but my dm was really helpful and patient
literally the epitome of teaching a new player is them using the wrong dice for an entire session
Great first session/lesson. Swindled paying high for an apple than getting arrested for assaulting the swindler. Brilliant
"BECAUSE THAT'S THE D12!" Nice shout-out to the challenge videos.
I started playing DND like a month ago and thus only now found this channel (love it)
I HAVE THOSE EXACT SAME BLUE DICE
Rolling with advantage and getting a 2 and a 3 is the most realistic part of this sketch
one of my 1st time players really struggled to pick up the idea of "anything" so started to zone out. while they were making their way through a dark tunnel network, they came across a ravine that they couldnt see to the bottom of. when I asked the party what they wanted to do, he was already losing interest and so for a laugh asked "I can do anything right?" to which I agreed. he took a shit into the ravine.
he thought this was kind of amusing, but when I asked him to make an intelligence check he was very puzzled. he got a really good roll, so I told him that based on the time it took before he heard a splash, that the ravine must be around 120 feet deep and ends in a body of water. this blew his mind and at that point he grasped the idea of being able to do anything.
he then went on to play the rest of the session like a seasoned player, had a really fun time and even got to finish off the dungeon boss.
damn i really love your videos, i hope they'll keep coming!
I am so glad I as a DM learned the game alongside other newbie players
Yeah I'll say this I think one of the biggest obstacles is the way the PHB presents information and as a result there is a lot of flipping around. I honestly made my own descriptions of the instructions to kind of streamline it. Like I will tell people to pick a background first because you typically get more proficiencies from class. So instead of picking rogue and then finding your background has proficiencies you picked already and flipping back to choose 2 more rogue ones. You pick two THEN you're going to rogue and you don't have turn back to the duplicates. Odds are less likely you'll need to return to backgrounds and pick something there and, in the rare chance you do, you might even be able to remember the one or two other options.
This video encapsulates everything a new player fears when starting dnd. Same goes for anyone starting anything else. If you want new players you’ll show them the way and let them take their time; you won’t get upset because they’re not sure what to do right away (seriously when I walk through a market with no further lore i really dk what’s expected as a dm or a player anyway)
I love how I noticed he was rolling a d12. Gotta love the details in the video that are brought up later.
That’s Why i have my player’s sheet with me as a DM, it’s important to keep track of everything to not get frustrated and help them the best we can 😌
DND should be a social friendly type game adaptable for everyone
