If one looks at the guitar finger board it's patterns actually require seven strings to be understood. With those patterns there are several emotional states that define how music is played- with few exceptions, most of the greatest guitarists figure this out. They are not playing scales or modes. This is why they can play almost anything. They are making music. If you don/t know this already. Tom just gave you the most important guitar lesson you have had. This is one of the main reasons why Tim Pierce said he is the best studio guitarist he has seen, Tom plays music, not guitar.

I love this idea that records create worlds. That really nails it. Great artists create a complex feeling through their music. It can sound very human and then also very alien, but good ones suck you in and hold your attention. I sometimes think you can feel what the artist felt when they wrote a song. And I don't mean "aw such a sad song," but the weird cool chills/vibe a song can hit. I'm listening to one right now it just sounds amazing, but I couldn't explain why it is. It just is.

Tom, when ya said: "Try to get into the emotion & vibe of those songs on those classic records ( I'm paraphrasing of course, but same message ) much like a movie producer".........it gave me goosebumps, I kid you not. Because THAT has always been my philosophy when trying to learn & advance my guitar playing, singing, and performing, all throughout my life......and I just turned 62 yrs old. The result: People in audiences at ALL of my gigs would come up to me during breaks to say things like: "Dude, I don't just hear you, I FEEL you".........or "Dude, you cause me to get all misty when you perform these songs" ( that one really hits home )........and: "That was the best version of that song I've ever heard anywhere"......etc, etc. These types of compliments made it all worthwhile. The money earned paled in comparison. Because if you're not pouring your heart & Soul into performing songs ( and finding that vibe when listening to those old records ), and then trying to really move your audience.........then what the hell is the point. I NEVER once concentrated on "chord progressions" or "scales". I swear, I love you more & more every day Uncle Larry. You can take 2 guitarists who play the same song correctly note for note, yet one of those cats puts the feel & vibe into it........while the other dude's version seems "sterile". There's a Spirituality in good musical performances.

I run a truck accessories shop in Texarkana TX. Love it, I'm 61 and played most of my life. You're the first complete content show I have seen in a LONG time. THANK YOU SO MUCH for saying what I knew and believed but never heard anyone in the business say, and the emotion connection. I have sought the simplest most direct way to say what I felt. Music is emotion in sound. One's expression is theirs or it isn't. Genres are languages within music, how well you speak them lies between your brain and your hands and, your determination to sculpt your sound,

Your chords in the opening jam might the the best yet!
About "emotional target": Strangely enough, I heard the same words from my music theory teacher back in the '70s. She taught the usual theory stuff (which I ate up), but when we listened to a symphony or string quartet, she always focused on the emotion of the piece, and correlated that with what was going on musically. She taught us kids that all those notes and chords don't mean much unless you feel it.
Thanks for bringing it up. Follows well on your recent "money notes" episode with Brian -- same thing, really.

Hey Starship Tropper, love your wisdom about finding the emotional threads as the guiding light of becoming a better musician. You have this vast musical vocabulary to call on so how much of that was just doing the hard work of listening and trying things vs what you naturally hear in your head. In my case, its going to be more of the blood, sweat and tears or working hard at it. It's worth it, but would love to better learn how to translate what i hear in my head to the fretboard.

That’s my favorite Uncle Larry shirt. I’ve worn mine out . I meet classmates constantly from wearing it.
