Great Spotted Grasspecker

  • I noticed this juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker foraging on my next-door neighbour's lawn. With it being an unusual visitor, I picked up the camera and captured the moment! The presence of the red patch on the woodpecker's head confirms that it is a youngster.

    Nice. We don't see these in the garden anymore since we moved to squirrel proof feeders. I'm sort of not that bothered really as they were quite mean and used to take big chunks of feathers out of any blue tit or great tit that dared to use the same feeder!
    The Nuthatch is small enough to still use the feeders though.

      Little beggars - pecker by name, pecker by nature (oo-er missus)! I've seen one in a garden further down the street in the past, but it's rare, and I've never observed one in my own garden yet.
