Great Spotted Woodpeckers Nest

  • Great Spotted Woodpeckers have been regulars in my garden for a few years, fortunately this year they decided to nest in an old ash tree opposite the house. They had it quite easy this year as they were collecting mealworms from the garden and the time when the chicks were getting larger coincided with the mayfly hatch. My robin was with me in the garden and at the nest when filming and had to get in on the act. The second part shows the juvenile as it starts to get the characteristic male red spot at the back of its head.

Beautiful video, excellent quality! I love woodpeckers, and hope some day to be lucky enough to have a woodpecker family to film in my yard. My woodpeckers come to the numerous suet feeders I put out all the time, and they are a joy to watch! I feed all sorts of birds, and the sparrows eventually got wise to my feeding ritual. When I'd sleep in on a lazy morning they'd be up in the bush that covers the window by my bed tapping on the window to get me to feed them. I like to keep the blinds partially open because the leaves from the bush covers that part of the window, and it's like having a houseplant I don't have to water right by my bed. Those little sparrows were persistent! I'd get out of bed and give them their seeds and then go sleep some more. There's a tree in the front yard (where the bushes by my bedroom window are) and it's infested with woodpeckers because I bought a giant box of those woodpecker suet treats and put a zillion of them up in that tree. I recently had surgery, so I got a little lazy and hadn't filled them for a while because climbing trees is tough right after surgery. A few days ago, I heard what sounded like someone slamming on my window with a small hammer. I thought my boyfriend was playing a trick on me, but he was in the house far away from the window. I got scared someone was breaking into my house and tentatively peeked under the blinds. Turns out a woodpecker learned the ''sparrow trick" and was pecking my window for more suet! I had my boyfriend go out there and refill the feeders, as my house is old and the windows are thin glass and I was afraid the window would get shattered by all that pecking! That'd be a weird one to explain to my landlord... Lol.

I feed birds on my tiny balcony so when i watch them they are only 0.5 meter away so i see them all good so i learn each type and they're behavior and it's all awsome, i've got a pair of great spotted woodpeckers this year and they been the most shy bird i've ever seen, but just now after 2 months of having them here, i can sit close and take pictures up close while they eat so they seem to get alittle used to having humans around, but they still get's spooked off xD All lucks to you of seeing more to this beautiful bird :D

Wonderful video! ... What is the sound of the bird calling in the background making the who who who whowho sound? Some type of dove?? I also hear that bird calling regularly on the Estonian Alutaguse Forest webcam. Thanks for a response!

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes it is a dove cooing in the background, it's the Collard Dove and it has colonised this area over the recent years.
