This video features the activation and operation of three Thorn Popular Pack battens, each running two T8 (26 mm / 1 inch) diameter, 600 mm (2 ft) 18 Watt linear fluorescent lamps.
All three fittings use EFS 120 Pulsestarter electronic starters for series lamp operation (one ballast driving two lamps). The lamps supplied with the fittings were UK-made GEs dating from 1998; these have proven surprisingly unreliable, and several have failed, resulting in their replacement with Sylvania LuxLine Plus equivalents, despite showing no signs of electrode blackening, and seeing little use. All lamps have a 3500 K ("White") triphosphor colour temperature, however, and with the diffusers in place, they look identical.
The Popular Packs replaced 50 Watt GU10 halogen downlights, which I loathed with a passion!

Oh my… Those are certainly way better replacements! Love how the EFS 120’s start them up too :)

Absolutely! Yes, it's interesting that there is that slight extra delay at each point further down the circuit, which causes the EFSs to strike consecutively!

They're great, aren't they - the only design flaw is that the diffusers become fly catchers (indeed, the reason that I took them down initially was because of the amount of insects that were decomposing in them!) but Thorn was right to think of how 'popular' they would become!

A question, do you have any ‘dutch’ fixtures? As the Philips SRM etc. or do you just stick to collecting luminaires from britain

Aside from the Dutch designs that turned up on British streets, I haven't - I've tended to keep with the lanterns that are familiar to me on account of limited storage space, though I do like the SRM design, as you happened to mention it.
