People are mad about an 8?
Well I've seen the ratings from fans and they are over the 9/10 range. Plus Gamespot's reviews are kinda infamous for being overcritical in their reviews.
E1ite Yoshi well they aren't the only ones who are giving it an 8. Almost every site has given it an 8, except polygon which gave it a 9. But the review is correct it has plenty of flaws but non the less shines through those flaws with a solid 8.
Yeah I know, but I guess one reason why some fans are calling this review bs is one the reviewer seems like he's reviewing it as a newcomer of the franchises. And two fans were kinda banking on this game to be the best Final Fantasy game in the series in a long time considering what fans have actually gotten over the years (with the exception of World of Final Fantasy).

Seeing how he criticizes the story, i expected a little less. 8 is good enough for a Final Fantasy with poor story and characters.

I love how people think "8/10" translates to "bad game" nowadays.
I blame IGN for being the first major game site that started rating games 10/10 starting with Super Mario Galaxy. Were it not for all the 10/10's that were randomly thrown around, we wouldn't be getting this perception.
Personally, I think the scores are pointless to look at by its own source. Just listen to what the person says in the review and decide based on what they said if you want to get the game or not. Not based on the final number.
I don't trust the game critics anymore. IGN and Gamespot both gave MG5 10/10. I'm a die hard MGS fan, that game was horrible.

Mr.Calculus/TheUnBiasedDude MG5 seems pretty split amongst the fanbase. Several of my friends who are die-hard MGS fans love 5, while there are several on the Internet who hate it. I boil that down to personal opinion over "Oh, the critics just don't know what they're talking about cause they're stupid idiots."
Although I will give you this; Since MG5 is so split, I definitely agree from an outsider's perspective that a game that split amongst the fanbase usually doesn't seem to equal a "10/10" experience.

Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade games are an art form, I like a good story to keep me invested and interested in the game. If it doesn't have a good story I don't give a shit and find little reason to turn it back on to mindlessly run around a dessert attacking monsters for no real reason that matters to me.

I can understand what you are saying, but people entertain themselves in different ways. It's a Final Fantasy game. To me, any Final Fantasy game should take you where you need to be (story wise) with minimum effort so that you can enjoy the experience of role playing, the music, and the atmosphere of it. Just because this one is an action one does not mean we should completely disregard the story and focus on the actual game play. I mean I would understand if XV was a spin-off or something where they can gamble a bit and implement new things to their franchise that can possibly destroy it. But it's a main title. You should care about the story. And if it actually sucks, well then Square Enix messed up big time.
I don't know if it's possible to be a gamer and not care about gameplay. I have been a gamer all my life. I own just about everything from retro to modern. All physical too (also a collector) yet I can never find myself playing a game for the gameplay itself. I can appreciate it just fine, but there has to be a story. That's what gaming is all about to me. I can play for an hour or two to kill time with actual gameplay, but that's about it. Games, to me at least, are meant to completely absorb you in them, and nothing does so more than story and music.
This game deserve a 10 off the strength of it actually coming out.

The story sucks anyway , as does the second part of the game , I say 8 is more than this game deserves . And btw , the main story takes up to 27 hours max , not over 30 hrs as said in this review

Persona's art-style is of a good anime. FF15 is a weird live-action 90s emo-band style mixed with anime.
I've always enjoyed the FF franchise more, but I'm really looking forward to Persona 5.

It's hard to take any company seriously that scores Infinite Warfare the same as FFXV. Reasons like this are one of many reasons mega companies like IGN/Gamespot/Kotaku etc are falling in popularity and big CZcamsrs like AngryJoe/boogie etc are on the extreme rise.

Look I have not played Infinite Warfare but I have seen good reviews because unlike Black Ops 3 it's campaign had effort put in. Sure it's a standard CoD but Final Fantasy does not have a good track record for games either.
You can't compare scores with scores. That's not how it works. One is a shooter and the other a jrpg. Also listen to what he says in the review. You also have to take into account it's subjective as well.

Sorry No. A thousand times NO.
Even if you think COD infinite warfare WAS a great game you can definitely compare a shit entry into genre A with a good one into Genre B (Not perfect mind you) but still. A 8 is an 8 no matter the genre it's given to is largely irrelevant. The score is still the same. Our opinions are so far apart on this we may as well be in different galaxies respectfully.

***** I'll be curious my own thoughts once I have proper time to finish it, though with the holidays that may be awhile. I think we agree on several points except the one.
I find it difficult to take any website that gives COD IW an 8 seriously. The reviewer may have been a fan but a good reviewer has to remain objective and separate that from being a personal fan of something. I was a HUGE fan of Fallout 4 for example but I recognize several of the steps backward it took compared to 3 and New Vegas and that while I enjoyed it as a whole it simply wasn't what it could have been.
And by calling FFXV Innovative I don't mean compared to industry leading games such as the Witcher 3,Skyrim etc etc. But given how linear the majority of FF games have been as of late it's innovative within the confines of the series and compared to several other JRPG"s as a whole since they tend not to focus on open world as much as Westernized RPG's do. That said from my playtime thus far I do agree it has several flaws but thus far is a step up from the last few installments IMO (I reserve the right to change that opinion once I finish it =p).

Because the gameplay, you know, the thing that will keep you playing for 50 plus hours is what matters most in a game and the gameplay in this was great. Most of the criticism was on the story and characters, the rest was nitpicking. That's why the game got an 8.

I'm just happy it doesn't suck, I never preorder so I was waiting to see if I should buy. Everything looks good so far, I especially love the interactions with companions in and out of battle. Their friendship seems surprisingly genuine.

Um, no. I love the franchise, but it hasn't been good in over a decade. XIII and its spinoffs were terrible, I could care less about MMOs, and XV is nothing but a gigantic mess. The characters are boring, the "combat" is practically nonexistent and long segments are nothing but QTEs (because Tabata is too lazy to press more than one button), and the game veers wildly back and forth between large open world segments and long corridor segments. Hell, the developers didn't even want it to be open world because they thought it would hurt the experience, but Tabata made them do it anyway because muh video game trends.
Besides, I don't want to be driving fancy cars and taking selfies with a boy band in a Final _Fantasy_ game.

So is the number of playable characters, how big the party is, the length of the main quest and if the side quests have some narrative to them. Finally the fact that the entire party are based on stereotypes is also completely objective.

I think there was all of like one game play actual game play trailer and to be honest it looked like something that a 15 yearold dreamed of as his perfect game. Evidently there wasn't much of a game there, other wise they wouldn't of decided to change directions five years ago. I think the GameSpot scoring system is stuck at 8. I mean, everything that they've recently reviewed has a score of 8...
To be honest, I blame them for changing their scoring system. I remember the good old days when they used to score games 8.9 - that would trigger fanboys. But it was a more diverse and better scoring system. For example, now you have no idea why they score a game an 8. Before you would say the system (graphics, sound, tilt, gameplay and value).
Now they are just lazy.
That moment you realize Kingsglaive and Brotherhood have more story and character than the actual game. I've seen both but really it seems like they should've just left that content in the game for players to experience and perhaps play through instead of making movies/anime.

Victor Richardson 20 min EPs on Back story for the main characters. Or 30 hours of just main story which includes story for characters that were never mentioned in Brotherhood and extending more backstory and sequel story coming out to have more story than even Kingsglaive. Not only that but even learning more about the Astrals or the all powerful 6 Bahamut included with even story on Ifrit. And more characters who weren't in either Kings or Brotherhood that play vital roles in this game. Its worth the money.
Cory Bailey I admit my comment is not to be taken 100% literally and you're completely right that the game has more potential with its story. I'm more so just stating that Kinsglaive and Brotherhood have story/character content that would have made the game much better.
It seems like Ignis, Prompto and Gladio aren't fleshed out at all in the game or given much depth. Sure Gladio might kick Noctis in the butt, Prompto may make you laugh and Ignis may nerd out over something but there doesn't seem to be any real depth to your party like in previous games. No complex backstories or deep personalities besides Noctis himself.
The anime at least explains the bond between the main party and how they got so close. This is why I'm saying Brotherhood has more character than the game and would rather they scrap the anime and put it in the game as fully rendered scenes that appear during your journey.
Kingsglaive is also locking away vital story elements that I would have preferred to see in the game. Depending on how it would be implemented, the story could have run for at least 5-10 hours longer with more context behind everything since people are complaining about how the story can get confusing.
Victor Richardson they break out some story content out because in the past ppl 1) hate backstory scenes 2) get lost in all globs of story like 13 3) hate reading.

I adore the characters and hanging out with them throughout the game is one of my favorite parts, but to each their own.

Menkhor - you kinda do need to accept it, but for different reasons than you think. Not because a great turn-based game from Square couldn't or wouldn't do well, but because they aren't capable of it anymore. It's an entirely different team nowadays. Most of the guys who contributed the real magic to Final Fantasy left Square a very long time ago. Even Nobuo isn't involved nowadays, which to me was really the killing blow.
Not saying the new guys aren't talented in their own way, but they are catering to an entirely different audience. In all honesty I look at these new games and it feels like I'd need to be a 14yr old j-pop fan to appreciate them.

I am pleased by IGN'd and gamespot's score. They didn't let their appreciation for the FF series cloud their judgement & scores. 30 hrs for the mainline story? that's pretty pathetic honestly... only 4 outfits the entire game? all merchants only hold 1 or 2 weapons LUL. generic story and cliche side characters, outdated graphics and NPC AI is so bad... pointless fetch/sidequests that have 0 relevance to the actual plot of the story, cringey/awkward dialogue... 10+ years development and way too much advertising to produce unwarranted hype, for a pretty disappointing title in the franchise. If this game was not FF, it would have received even a lower score I bet.

TheRaven nah, it's decent. you should still play. an 8 for this game in particular means some things were left unfleshed out (some of those things being left in the dlc).
Devs have announced that what the DLCs will contain is mostly cosmetic and a somewhat short story DLCs about Gladious, Ignis and Prompto and you can play with each of them in their respective story DLC. They haven't announced any major story expansion about Noctis or otherwise.

That's sort of subjective though, isn't it? How would anyone know whether or not you would enjoy it? If you're asking if it's easy to get into, then yes. Having played earlier titles isn't required with most Final Fantasy games, and especially this one as it's so drastically different.
if you like hack and slash and leveling up your char then yes I have lots of friends that havent played final fantasy or dont like jrpg i let them play the judgement demo and they love it I'm a final fantasy fan and even though the gameplay is different I still love it.

So it got an 8 but the game play and mechanics are praised. It got an 8 because of it's character and story mostly which to me is fine because Final Fantasy lore tends to the usual japanese fantasy stories that you find in most RPGs and Animes. And based off most reviewers that's what was the game's weakest link was. Overall people are saying it's a great game just not the best written game ever. Is that bad, no i kind of expected reviewers to always criticize the FF stories but that's just me. Glad to hear that the action based gameplay is getting praised. I'll get to try it later and find out for myself of course

I think the characters are fascinating and the latter half of the story which challenges their bond was some of the most emotionally invested I have been since FFX.
Im tired of people who dont play alot of JRPGs reviewing JRPGs. Of course an 8 is not bad by all means; however, im having hard time trusting this review. I disagree about the characters failing to impress. Alot of development of the 4 main characters is done through the 5 episode anime series. Of course its not part of the game.... and this is a review of the game... but the world, lore and is bigger than what is just in the game... assuming this reviewer never read the novel, seen the movie or the anime series....

This franchise is going down the hill fast. You know why? old developers gone, new guys don't know what they are doing. The franchise miss what make old Final Fantasy 7 8 9 great, exclude small group, less characters, less summon, and dump down contents.
I think this game is waay overpraised by fans. I think it's a decent 6.5/10. It could have been a lot better, but the soundtrack, the repetitiveness in combat and side missions, the clumsiness of the stealth mode (as you will notice in stealth missions), the plot wholes, and the poor story telling ability can't go unseen. Every reviewer is either mentioning some of these but not doing the maths (like GameSpot who still gives it an 8 nevertheless) or just don't notice it at all (like IGN - which blatantly chooses to ignore it).
Or maybe its just a good game.

If you seen the movie you could tell that the plot was weak, in my opinion, a FF with good graphics and bad plot is like a sport car without wheels.

Final fantasy 10 was the last one that was almost good, but even that got boring cause it was way too long and had too much fan padding. FF15 might be good because it is short, 14 hours is acceptable for casual gamers even if the story doesnt hold up. I would buy this when it is 20 bucks.

8/10 is still a great score. Yeah, we're going to get some people crying that, "Oh, it was in development for 10 years so I was expecting a perfect 10!" but those people are delusional. It wasn't in development for 10 years. It was in development _hell_ for 10 years. For it to come out of that with an 8 (and higher from other sites), is damn impressive to me.

tatwong HK there are some flaws with the game, plus it's design in general is stale compared to games like Skyrim, GTA, Witcher 3, MGS V, etc.... in terms of open world games. I think if this game came out earlier in the generation it would be a 9/10. But honestly besides that it seems like a solid game and a step in the right direction for final fantasy. My only big problem is the story. I understand most FF fans will watch Kingsglaive and brotherhood but as a newcomer to the series I feel like there should at least be a cuts scene in the beginning of the game to help me understand the story.

Fábio Eira you realize that the shipping sales of this game alone are the biggest of any FF game in 24 hours ever (over 5 million ever). So the "hype" surrounding the game didn't make it crash at all. It just propelled it. Hell, it even had more shipping dates than the witcher 3 and I clocked in atleast 120 hours in that game.

The Final Fantasy series is completely weighed down by recurring & tired plot devices/cliches. After 15 installments, it's a tired sport. We've seen it all before, kings, fire/ice/thunder spells, moody pretty boys, crystals, dungeons, and even open world. Final Fantasy games were of the very first open world games!
This appears to be a mechanically sound game that offers absolutely nothing new.

They would be better off creating a new series of RPGs in a re-imagined Final Fantasy universe with original re-curring devices such as Chocobos, but not Chocobos, because that's from the old universe.
Of course that will never work, because the I am speaking of the very lifeblood of the series. The truth is that the lifeblood of the series is also what traps it to a slow boring death. I'll stick to ff VI through X for to remember the feels. Unfortunately the series brings no more feels for me otherwise, it just feels tire, hollow, and uninspired.
