Miscellaneous BBC Schools and Daytime continuity - 1970s

- A compilation of BBC1 schools and colleges and other daytime continuity from the mid to late 70s (in no particular order) and featuring both version of the BBC Schools Diamond, the later slides and dots presentation, and various other clocks, slides and captions. Few junctions are in full.
Programme credits and brief clips include Scene, Going to Work, A Good Read, and the end credits of The Electric Company, a 70s American series produced by the Children's Television Workshop - kind of a Sesame Street for slightly older children. I had no idea that it had been shown at some point by the BBC!
Thanks to the late Simon Luxton who provided me with this footage.
takes me back to simpler times this. all i need now is to show it on a 50 inch tv in a wooden cabinet and a MASSIVE video recorder. they had to roll the tv/video combo set into the school rooms it was so big.
Loved being off school and watching these
Yes I was thinking the same
Me too. I got more education from BBC Schools & Colleges than I did from school!
Me as well
Do they even do these programs anymore?
I loved being off school.... (in the Seventies!!). 😁😁
I cannot believe i,ve found this tune at the beginning.Have had this tune in my head since the 70s and havent heard it until now, never knew what it was called but remembered it was often before the schools programmes, many thanks for posting this.
czcams.com/video/eFwj8U0OIJo/video.html A Tune For Lucy - Inigo Kilborn
Used with both versions of the Diamond (The second in yellow/gold was introduced at the start of Summer Term 1975 on 21st April)
It’s called “ a tune for Lucy “ second tune is called “Sara’s tune”, both on Spotify
@@andrewswift9039 That's interesting... so what did they use when the schools went back in January 1975, after the globe and clock had already changed to yellow on blue?
These clips indeed are wonderful of course. They are from BBC1's then schools series from the 1970s and 80s also as well by the way. Used really I guess up until 1983 when BBC2 took over schools then as Daytime on Two as well. Thank you indeed too!
Love that opening piece of music
Here’s the full Theme...

I recall these (full off air format) original broadcasts were recorded on U-matic cassette video machines specifically for use in schools.
These machines were enormous beasts taking up an entire table in the art room! :)
I have been searching online for a BBC schools programme called Zigga-zagga for a while and at last found a snippet at the end of this video.
Isn't that a young Frank Skinner introducing Zigga Zagga?
Thanks for posting these classic childhood tv memories 🎶
No compilation of BBC Schools footage is complete without an appearance of 'Bart'
Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson in Going to Work! Remarkable.
Thank you for this-well done it is of course too. Wonderful!!
I love the theme tune to scene. 70s synth tune at its best.
I hope they all lived happily ever after in Consequences, but we’ll never know.
Great collection. I love A Tune for Lucy/Sara's Tune. That Merry-Go-Round theme clip still sounds futuristic, and that's the first time I've heard the Electric Company theme since I was at primary school. 😊
I recall episodes of "Twentieth Century History" were also aired on PBS stations in the US as part of our school TV program blocks as well (usually referred to as "Instructional Programming" in TV guides).
@LolliesOfficial Nice they did that.
@LolliesOfficial It just seemed funny the BBC would turn it down anyway but I could understand the concern they had at the time.
The title sequence with the flashing images and timpani was pure sublimination, took me right back
Love the upload. Anything with the bbc Wales programme that was broadcast at approx 10:23 ( not sure what day of the week) but I do remember the announcer saying "the next programme is in the Welsh language and on certain transmitters only. The next programme on all transmitters is you and me at 10:45".
Yes, I remember that too. Thank you of course!!
It was Friday after look and read
Nice someone at the Beeb thought The Electric Company was worth showing!
Looking on the Genome shows it only aired twice in 1976...? None the less I’m quite amazed!
Betaman I bet.
From this Wikipedia article - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sesame_Street_in_the_UK:
"In 1974, the BBC broadcast 13 episodes of The Electric Company, another CTW show, for an eight-week run.[8] Their rationale to air it was that the show was a part of a school curriculum, accompanied by back-up resources such as books. An independent assessment was conducted afterwards. With the BBC's refusal to air Sesame Street, the debate over its place on British TV passed to ITV."
The BBC's opposition to airing these shows is not really surprising. Brits have always been fearful of 'Americanisation', and children's TV is a sacred cow.
ABC in Australia have aired Sesame Street (and many other shows originating from PBS) for as long as I can remember. I do recall as a kid having the teacher correct me when I said 'zee' instead of 'zed', but long term it didn't really seem to do anything to me.
@@mubd1234 Well good to know Australia didn't mind the program at all. In Canada, CBC aired Sesame Street roughly the same as the US but opted to create their own segments that were edited into the US episodes (and often a year or two behind what was airing in the states).
The Electric Company was aired on BBC1 in UK? I didn't know that!
Loved it as a kid! It had a short run but BBC were too snobbish and cut it smh
I miss the days of Received Pronunciation.
Quite!
@@paulsawtell3991 Maybe you need subtitles, I don't. I get about.
Quite calming
Great clip, brings back lots of memories. Simon, I’ve got a question for you - what’s the best way of getting in contact?
I’m sure there’s a way of sending private messages on here. Failing that, if you’re on Facebook, you should find me by searching for the same username.
Superb
Good old Bart!
Here’s me not properly understanding the title and waiting for the show to start.. 😬
Does anyone know if the BBC1 diamond animation was transmitted off film each time it went out? Presumably it was colourised "live" like the globe and clock. The music seems to happen so consistently with the animation that I can't imagine it was played in separately. Or did they really have a kaleidoscope of mirrors in their Noddy room?
No wonder a whole generation of British kids (the now Brexit generations) thought Ireland was in Britain - look at the opening graphics to that TV show.
I'd watch that now instead of the rubbish they inflict on us.
8:32 If you're going to have sex without using contraception, consequences are something you can expect.
I grew up on this stuff and I still find it all off putting and scary
That bloke nearly getting crushed by the boat scene was funny
I'm pretty sure that's Tony from EastEnders.
Not that funny.
@@katymagnets yup, and Tom Howard from Howard's Way
these programmes would have also been watched by those either off school with a Cuthbert (Cuthbert Rumbold - cold) like I was a few times or just plain sagging school!
Was waiting for the countdown clock and the Merry Go Round theme tune took me back!
Bring the educational programmes back on BBC1 instead of Can't Pay Won't Pay and all the other bollocks
Bring the test card back too.
@@dvidclapperton BBC Test Card F
Great to see the BBC end titles for The Electric Company! Do you have the full episode? I believe they cut the show down into 20 minutes, removing any American references like Fire Hydrant etc. I'd love to see how it was cut down.
That’s interesting - I didn’t know about the BBC edits of The Electric Company. To be honest, I’m kinda surprised they showed it at all! Sorry, I have no footage other than these closing credits.
@@CaptainSiCo Ok cool, thank you for uploading it :-)
What was the piece or classicsl music that appeared twice with the dots.
Does anyone know what the tune is between 11:31 and 13:05? It sounds like something that should've been in a film.
twittykins It’s Justine by Bruno Nicolai
Thanks.
Love Bruno Nicolai, done some great Italian horror scores too 👍
A bit of Dixieland Parade playing. Strange to hear it on BBC1.
Does anybody know the names of the tracks accompanying the Diamonds?
9:05 The Water in Majorca, Don't Taste Like What it Oughta!
I too remember the Heineken ad with Brian Pringle.. Sylvestra le Touzel, some breeding with a name like that!
How did you get these? Did you record them yourself?
Danzella UK These were sent to me on video a few years back from someone who shared my interest in schools continuity. I’m not sure who originally recorded them.
Great work making these available, totally forgot about all this
What's that bit of music at the end at 33:52? Though familiar just can't put a name to it.
Ardent Elisabeth by Raymond Guiot - used for a while as the theme for Gardeners World.
Does anyone know the tune at 11:33? I can remember my Mum singing some kind of lyrics to it when it came on as continuity once.
It’s called Justine by an Italian composer Bruno Nicolai - there are a few versions on CZcams; I think it comes from a film, but I’m not aware of any lyrics. I may be proved wrong!
Great upload! Anyone know the name of the theme for 'Going to Work' (at 28.05) pls?
Hi there, Did anyone respond to your question about the name of the Going to Work theme ? I'm trying to find it on the net, but drawing blanks....
According to a comment elsewhere on CZcams it’s actually called “Going to Work” and it’s by the late Tony Meehan of The Shadows. The first time I heard it again after all these years I tried finding the title too!
Blimey crowds at football matches, who remembers that??
Does anyone remember a song they used to play, with s female vocalist. Part of me wants to say it was about a paperboy (I may be wrong), but I just remember the lyrics "every dayyyyy"
Are you thinking of Back Home Once Again by Renaissance? It was the theme to the Tyne Tees series The Paper Lads and Tyne Tees (not the BBC) used to sometimes play it between schools programmes. It’s on CZcams, along with mock intervals that feature it.
What is the title of the music accompanying the dots as they go off , just before the programme about dismantling walls?
It’s called BART and is by the American band Ruby. Quite a few uploads of the track on here.
Thank you .
Could anyone tell me what the tune is between 10:10 and 10:32? I know it so well!!
It's The Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin
Seremaa73,-this version of maple leaf rag is by the u.s. army chamber orch, and the full track is on school dots -encounter france countdown, uploaded by PLANE 340
whats the peice at 1.10?
How many adverts?
None! Wish I could go back to those times, these days your constantly bombarded with shit, adverts, political correctness etc, truly horrible
A Good Job With Prospects,?
The test card f f for goodness sake How about a cartoon or 2 What do the announcers do when a test card is on any road? Have a cuppa tea yeah?
Who knows then I wonder what they did of course so then too?
