Adventure Time was a show that I grew with. As a kid I'd always be hyped for the next episode, and I'd always be excited to see it on TV.
The show is extremely dark for a kid's cartoon, and really existential. One of those dark themes is explored by through one of my favorite characters, Simon Petrikov (the Ice King). For such a light hearted character, he had a tragic backstory. The crown slowly got him to lose his mind, which reminds me of dementia, something that I've seen first hand in my family. The character hit quite close to home, thus I made this edit. Hope y'all enjoyed!

Well, back then, the audience was just kids, i'm guessing the reason people seem to understand the mature tones of the show later on was most likely because those same kids grew. plus, cartoons back then wasnt really as respected

Finn always sees him as a villain kidnapping princesses in his younger years. But after Finn witnessed this video of what he was, and what made him into the freak he’s known today in that timeline, fin’s perspective to the ice king changed. Finn sees him as a human trapped in insanity by the crown’s curse, begging for salvation from anyone.
I also think Finn didn't perceive Ice King as a human before that tape. All he had to shape his perception were Jake, the candy people, the many monsters and creatures of Ooo, and so on. He must've seen Ice King as -- for lack of a better word -- another creature/humanoid-but-not-human entity within Ooo. A creature that's cartoonish and comical and the antagonist to the hero.
So I'd like to think that after that tape, Finn realized a faint hope of being able to interact with a fellow human, like how he was excited to find Susan and the Hyoomans. Then again, I've forgotten the many episodes of AT and this was probably well enough described in an episode lolll.
Finn is simple and childish but Simon.

I feel like all races can morph into the wizard race under the influence of magic. Kinda similar to vampires I guess, where race shifting can happen. Simon is human, Ice king is a wizard.

I just watched the episode when he said that and I laughed because of the context.
Basically, Ice King has wizard eyes that can see things that aren't there, and it was heavily implying that it was the same hallucinations when you're smoking weed. Laughed like an idiot, ngl.

The crown being a metaphor for addiction is so beautiful and heartbreaking
It ties in to several things.
The means for the person to use it are like a drug.
Long-lasting effects of the Crown are like a degenerative disease, like dementia.
And there is also ploy on fate in there. Since most people who used the Crown end up in uncanny circumstances and have no choice or idea what they are getting themselves in to.
It's more like a dementia and/or alzheimer sickness not an addiction, no adicction will keep you so aware that your losing yourself, losing your mind and those can be hereditary so you have nothing to do since both have no cure too
@JenCloud Stronger forms of addiction, like addiction to stimulants or opioids, do cause a decline in cognitive abilities over time. They also cause personality changes. A lot of changes that occur over the years are not reversible despite rehabilitation.

2:03 is anyone going to talk about how heartbreaking it feels seeing him, it's like seeing Simon trying to rip out of the crown, begging for Betty to come back.
I was watching that episode the other day and the context of the scene makes it much more heartbreaking. If you don't remember please go watch it, it genuinely made me sad now that I'm grown and understand what's happening
Ironic how this lore started as a joke and then went on to be adventure time's best character.

Simon's story is just sad. A man lost to madness and unaware of what he's doing. Even after he's cured of his madness he's depressed and without purpose in a world that has changed drastically, truly a man frozen in time.

The transition between Simon and Ice King's voices is weirdly fascinating, despite the fact it's the same VA.

Only thing is that 30 degrees celsius body temperature would be quite high if he was "lowering at a supernatural rate"
I love the background of farm world Simon being that he would freeze his dimensions bomb. In the face of such a challenge he gave his life to save others, a truly brave and selfless man.
this is one of the realest saddest moments in cartoon history. he wanted princesses trying to find his princess.

simon has been losing his mind more than ever before since he lost betty
and even went as far as to summon a ritual in order to see betty one more time (which only made a portal to open up on the back of his head)

I honestly feel really bad for Simon. He didn’t want this life but the crown controls those who wear it and now we’re seeing him wanting to put it back on.

The most depressing fact about ice king. (In my opinion)
Simon petrikov had put it on his head as a joke. A JOKE! He didn’t know. He couldn’t have known. The moment It touched his head he was already in too deep. He’s in a prison in his own mind. The crown has a curse. A curse created by the original gunter. That’s how he saw his owner. And he wished to be like him. At the cost of his sanity.

Magic, Madness, and Sadness… all wizards in adventure time have this. It’s probably what made the lich a formidable foe to Finn and his friends
Simon Petrikov is truly the character with the saddest backstory in the series, it breaks my heart when I rewatch adventure time and the spin off series. He went through so much, and had to suffer and lose everything, including his mind and memories. There’s also a clip of him flying off being really sad talking to himself saying something along the lines of “Why doesn’t anyone like me? Is it because I’m magic?” and the sad truth is that it is because oh his magic, the crown drove him to insanity causing him to make many many questionable life choices and made him feel even more alone in the world, if he didn’t have magic then he wouldn’t have been insane and made people scared of him and people hate him. There is so much more to his character than just a creepy old man who kidnaps princesses and I feel like not nearly enough people appreciate him and his character development and lore. He’s so underrated

i want something like a novel of adventure time, based on simon petrikov or other character that can relate the 1000 years background story in a bit serious way
When you watch adventure time as a kid you relate to finn and enjoy his goofy fun personality but when watching it when you're older and watch it... You see just what's wrong with Finn and feel bad for the other characters
hazah! people understand adventure time now! took a lot but we got there in the end. idk why everyone just stopped watching the first 5 - 19 episodes in, but at least I get to see more people get inspired by Ice Kings story. He is a tragic character who put SHEER will power into not going insane, after 1000 years, that 999, is what probably did him in for good. HE STILL WASN"T A BAD PERSON! And betty, sacrificed everything for him, through those obsession's. Not even living your life at that point at all. Heartbreaking...

And to think Ice King started out as a villain of the week and turned into one of the best and most tragic parts of the entire show. Not sure what was worse. For Marceline and Betty to know who Simon once was and to watch him descend into madness unable to stop it or Simon knowing he was losing it and then being a shell of his former self.
To be trapped in your own head, to push everyone away due to your trauma and PTSD episodes, and those that do stay you've damaged and hurt so much you need to be the one to walk away so they can live free...

I dont think Simon deserved what happened to him and Betty but life is life i guess kind of the entire reason why we watch shows like this.

interesting how they revised Simon and Betty at some point but after seeing the Fionna and Cake special where we SEE that betty A. wasnt his Fiance she was a student and a fan of simon, and B. SHE WENT ON THE JOURNEY WITH HIM FOR THE CROWN

You know it just occurred to me. The crown's power came from crystals that were a creatures eyes at one point. In some stories when something is made with part of an animal/person/deity or a magical being, the weapon/armor/etc keeps some of the things will/mind, so maybe part of the reason the wish "To be Master Evergreen" was imperfect and caused some insanity was because the crystal-eyed beast was spiteful about its slaying (and the stealing of its eyes). Its one possibility at least.

I love Simon. I feel I relate to him alot. The way how he feels complete abandon all the time when the princesses are taken away from him. The constant fear of losing people and that they dont truly like him. So relatable and such a tragic character.

This man was able to not only surpress the crowns urges for a while, he loved betty so much that the crown was intergrated with the idea of princesses, he saved all of oo by raising marciline as his own shown by feona and cake and keeping marciline safe with the crown, his wife basicaly killed golb the strongest enitiy to ever exist! was the one to find the enchiridion in the first place alongside betty and lastly in an alternate timeline stopped the bomb knowing it would kill him and survived an apocalypse with a child. This is why I love Simon
