I tried to do all this on my mower following the D110 manual. Took over four times as long as this video. His instructions are exactly correct and very well organized. I’d rate this video five stars out of five. How I wish I’d seen it long ago. Thanks for the best maintenance instructions!
You are a rare breed...attention to detail, you dont mis a thing. This is how I ended up servicing all my toys myself, service people just dont care like you. Thumbs up...you are a rare service tech. Nice to know there not all nitwits and corner cutters
Thanks Keith! You made my week!
I've been having issues with my D110 (second hand). I changed the oil and the blades but left the old spark plug and fuel filter since they looked good. (I am a total noob at this, btw.) Watching this video and the way you introduced all of the needed tools and your step-by-step instructions, I will be taking her apart this weekend with your video on pause for every step. Thanks for an amazing video that makes a noob like me feel like they can do it too!🔧🚜
Thanks for sharing and supporting the channel!
This guy is the cream of the crop very detail oriented I got LA-115 now I learn I have a bend shaft pulley wobbles.
You are the best instructor ever! I think you're going to be my favourite viewing. Oh ..and I had my E110 booked in for a service which was going to cost me $450.00 minimum, but more likely $600.00. Not anymore after watching your brilliant easy to follow video! Thank you! Caroline from " Down Under"
Hi Caroline, thank you for the kind comment. I’m glad this video will help you save $$. and it was easy to follow! Please give this a like and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. Thank you for supporting my channel:)

Probably the best video on JD 110 service on CZcams, great job!
Glad you liked it!
Oil level good. I slow down and make sure spindle has time to slow down. That help more than anything. Thank you so much.
Thanks for taking the time to go into such detail. I have the same unit and bought it used and love it and want to keep it for a long time. Everything you did makes perfect sense and well explained. thanks again for a great video!
Thanks for the very informative and thorough video! My mower is coming up on it’s first service and thanks to you, I’m prepared for the task!
I’m glad you liked it and glad it will be a good video for you! I hope it wasn’t too long. Please give it a thumbs up if you haven’t already and thank you very much for supporting my channel. It is greatly appreciated. Thank you for commenting!
From queensland australia, wanted to say thank you very much for this video! Much appreciated
I'm glad it was helpful from eastern US and thank you for the kind kind comment :)
From the start when he called a part a thingy, I knew I had the right vid!
Very good teaching. Now for my final exam!!! Thanks!
Best of luck! :)
I see you leave no stones unturned. A good man always finds away. I've got a D130. I'll follow your lead. Thanks
Thank for the kind comment. I think the only difference may be you have a twin cylinder engine from Briggs and Stratton. The spark plugs should be champion RC12YC and the air filter will be different. Please click on the like button, subscribe and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for informative video. I now feel confident that I can perform maintenance on my JD D-100.

Hey BRAD. My son inherited an LA145 so just found your video for general maintenance (father/son project). Great video. Clear instructions. Good audio. Clear, bright lighting. Great editing to make it quick and clean. No distracting music, background noise or wasted commentary (Eric O commentary excepted). Great tips to make it easier and better. Other guys can learn how to make great videos from your example. Subscribed.
Good luck with the John Deere project with your son! Thank you for watching and supporting my channel. Please spread the word to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated.
AMAZING video! ALL signal, ZERO nose! Thank you for this. I inherited an old John Deere L120 when I bought my home. You've helped me SO much with this. I'm definitely subscribing, Sir!

Excellent video. I bought a S100 from Lowe's this year an didn't get an owners manual. This video helps a lot! I had no idea about all the grease fittings. Now I feel like I know exactly what needs to be done to get the mower ready for each season. The deck leveling instructions can be used now, because I think I'm already getting some uneven cuts. Lowe's probably didn't adjust that when they put the unit together. Thanks for posting this.
I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for the kind comment. Please give this video a like and subscribe. There will be more to come on the S100 series. Thank you for watching.
This is an excellent video! Cuddos to the camera dude for getting focus and point of view almost perfect! I have an X534 and even though this is a different model it's going to be very helpful for my first try at maintenance. Thanks!
Hey Steve, thank you for watching and the kind comment. Your machine is a great mower! Treat it correctly and it will take care of you!
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I bought it used so it’s not staying on after I start it. The oil pressure light stays on when it conks out. Fingers crossed the maintenance will fix it
You are my HERO - highly competent and effective, positive proof "where there's a will there's a way". A little reminiscent of the long lever arms that were on the walls at the US Army Anniston Depot where tanks were manufactured and repaired in WWII, and the work force was 90% women. They made it work. I really LOVE the way you lay out what is needed for the work. The warning about CHEAP (poor quality - no other way to put it) bonnet hinges - excellent point. "If you don't, you gotta do what you gotta do" -- love it. Good to know how to remove the mower deck -- I do so seasonally as a snow blade is installed.
Very good, thorough video. You should be a teacher/instructor. I work in a lawnmower shop doing customer service, parts, and services. I am in awe with all you do mostly with one hand when I struggle with 2!! Why don't my clips just pop off like that?? Lol. I have suscribed and looking forward to more mower videos!
Hi Lori, thank you for watching, commenting, the very kind comment and supporting my channel!! Please tell your friends :)
Love this video, I just bought a used D110 from a small engine place, it has high hours but was very well taken care of. Need to download the manual for it. Thankfully I'm about 12 miles from a JD dealer so parts should be easy to get.

Amazing how many people cannot check the oil. Soooo easy. It's their money, but what a sin to blow an engine because the owner cannot lift the hood to check the oil. I do for ALL my engine machinery. A Rule. Amazing how much can disappear when machinery is parked in the woods or garage. Great video. thanks

what a great video excellent, my mower is 4 years old ,never have done anything to it i guess got to do some thanks to your video
Yes, your machine is in need of service. How many hours do you put on the machine in one season?
A drill with a wire wheel will clean up the blade nuts before you try to remove them. I sharpen blades b4 installing. Clean and/or replace the w-ring at the oil drain. Blow the air filter out from the inside out. I run much less air in the tires for a smother ride. Set the deck @ 3.5 or 3.75 and slide a 2x4 under each side of the deck, up. Then just lower/raise the deck to snug. You are using the 3.5" side of the wood as a feeler gauge to set the deck. If you use the deck gauges, just buy two and use them both at the same time. It will same time and hassle of moving around. (I've got 4, but that's me.) Oh, and if you use long enough 2x4s, when removing or installing the deck, use the wood laying down the 1.5" way so you don't have to lift the deck to hook the hangers. Also a little easier to drag deck around. Good vid!
Excellent detailed explanation and a great video. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Hi Hazel, I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for the kind comment!
Great video. I believe I have a bad vacuum issue with mine and I just replaced my pump. I noticed it doesn't go toward the front of the motor to the cover, but to the oil dipstick. Does that mean I could get a no pump issue if low on oil? We need a video for just fuel pump troubleshooting on this odd motor!
Why do you think you have a bad bad vacuum issue? Why did you replace the fuel pump?
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines no start issue, verified spark at plug, changed fuel filter. Noticed fuel didn't look like it was flowing. Arrow is in right direction replaced fuel pump, still nothing. Not sure if I just got a bad pump but I can suck/blow trace amounts of gas through it.
Check to see if you have a electric fuel shut off valve under the carburetor. You will know you have one if you see a cylinder looking round object with a wire sticking out of it under the carburetor which is below the air filter. To check this you must have the emergency brake on and listen very carefully turn the key from off to on and listen for a click at the solenoid. keep
turning the key often on and you should hear that click if you do not you may have bad wiring or a bad fuel shut off solenoid. Fuel pumps hardly ever go bad. Also check to make sure your fuel cap vent is clear
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thanks I'll check those things. I did have the electric fuel shut off and I pulled it off and removed the black tip to ensure fuel would flow, but I never saw anything. I kept trying to "prime" it so to speak and the motor locked up! I did hear a loud bang, so I'm sure I slung a rod. May be the end for this old gal! 🤣
Pull the spark plug out and see if the engine will crank over make sure the ignition wire is away from the spark plug hole and if fuel comes out of the hole then you have a Carburetor issue. If nothing comes out of the hole then you may have a locked motor.
Good job, you do better then I do, better maintainence
Always wipe off grease cert before grease
Why is blade so tight,??
I use 3/8 Rachel over 48 years.
Hi Tom, thanks for watching and commenting. The blade nut being so tight is from many using power tools to tighten. I was showing the easiest way to brake them loose.
Thank you so much for making this video it was very informative my aunt is giving me her d110 John Deere lawn mower cuz she can no longer do gardening and I could use it and it's older it's a few years old so I am going to need to know what it is stuff I'll probably be sending you messages from time to time if that's all right

Great video, thank you ! Quick question, does it matter what kind of oil you put on the air pre-filter? Is this necessary?
I use a very light oil 0/20and do not over oil it. My opinion, It is important to oil the pre-filter so it will collect and keep the dust particles from entering the engine.
Great video and camera work.

When replacing the blades, does the orientation matter!? Can one be side to side and the other front to back? Hope you understand what I mean. Thx!
Orientation does not matter. They are not timed blades.
Excellent instruction video! One question; what did you do when "you engaged and disengaged the deck"? How did you do this, please??? Got me stumped on what you actually did! Appreciate your advice. Cheers from Down Under.
Not sure what you mean. What time in the video was it?
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks for your reply - I think you were meaning just applying the blade operation lever when you were installing the deck belt - so doing so was just to take up tension in the belt? Also (because I tend to be heavy handed when tightening up nuts etc, I always use a torque wrench - got myself into much trouble in the past by not using one)! So, can you please tell me what the correct JD D110 nut torques are for the spindle pully nut and the four spindle to deck screws which can't find posted anywhere on the net and JD wants $140 for the service manual; which IMO is just plain extortion!!!! Appreciate your help please. Cheers, Ian
I only use a torque wrench on items that must be torqued per instructions. The only way you will be able to find the torque values on every nut and bolt is to find a torque value chart for nuts and bolts. Then you will need to find out what size bolt or nut and the hardness of the bolt or nut, then go to the chart for the torque. I would suggest trying find a chart online to help you.
I paint mower deck every year, bottom and top.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I have a John Deere S100 with only 12 hrs. on it. When I turn on the blades I get vibration and I had the blades balanced and still shakes. Any ideals. Thanks
Make sure the engine speed is at full when your running the deck or the deck will shake more. Did it shake from new?? If yes then most likely it’s a normal shake. If no then what happened to make it shake? The S100 is a very generic tractor, lighter weight, thinner material that may make it shake more then a heavier gauge machine.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I took off one blade and put it back in the opposite direction of the other blade and the shaking almost stopped. Thanks for your input. Have a nice Day!!
? Making sure the oil was filled properly I’ve noticed when engaging PTO a large amount of black smoke came out from right side of engine. Any suggestions.
Black smoke normally means to much gas. Maybe your running with the throttle in the choke position or the choke is sticking in the on position. Also too much oil is not good. Make sure the oil level is between the dots on the oil dip stick.
Other than low oil, the mower appears as if it's spent the last three years in his basement or show room.
We always clean the machines when they come in so they look good when they go home to the customer.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Bravo! I never went down that road, now it makes sense!
Service for the battery, if the fluids low what do you fill it with ?
You can use distilled water in a lead-acid battery.
I noticed in this video you used regular motor oil. And not JD turf guard. I own a E 100 series always using JD oil. I live in Orlando, temperatures always in the 90s. What SAE oil can I use? Turf Guard oil is expensive. Also, have you any videos on the JD LT-190 series. I feel like I just went to JD maintenance college. Thank you for your response.
You can use pretty much any good motor oil. I feel as long as you’re changing the oil on a regular basis Andy oil filter if you have one your engine will be fine.
I have yet to see an LT 190 in my shop.
It was “and oil filter”
