This has to be the first time that the sentence "just gonna check my wiring [...] yup, we have fire!" was used as a good thing.
eh with checking the ignition on a car this is fairly common...

As a grown up this is my Saturday morning cartoon. And I don’t even have to get out of bed.
Calling anything your saturday morning cartoon as an adult is being proud of having a manchild's mind. You can now compare me to a character from one of the many children's books you recently read or ask your funko pops what they think.

Oh Adam. This is why we watch.
And the full rickshaw was SO MUCH BETTER than we could have imagined, b/c of what was pulling it!
I love how Adam runs his hands over his hair and it ends up looking more crazy than before.
i get the same reaction with my mentat quality eyebrows
Only with black paint on his hands. :-))
Its a talent

I find the 'click-click' of the wire strippers very satisfying. I love it when my tools tell me that they are working properly.
Id like to know what kind they are. They seem to work very well.

That "hermaphroditic velcro" is called dual-lock, and it rules!
he rejected your reality and substituted his own.
It's huge in tiny home circles and it is the best stuff ever. Highly recommend.
Yep great stuff been using it for years
velcro, while the common name for the material isn't the prim and proper term anyways, since it was originally a trademarked name, like kleenex in USA or hoovers in the UK. proper name is hook and loop.
I got my first bit with command strips, amazingly solid hold compared to regular Velcro.
Those bulbs are so fun! We used them for Lumieres' hands in "Beauty and the Beast." We used a drill battery to power them and kept it in a waterproof bag on the actors back. Ran the wires down his coat and there were plugs connecting to the candle stick hands so he could take them off in-between scenes. It allowed the actor to turn the bulb on and off onstage without needing a license for pyro and it kept everyone safe! :) Love the channel!
i think Adam is the only person who can legit say "I've always wanted to build a rickshaw....."
That is a Green Lantern prop just DYING to be built.... Get a little nfc involved, so it lights when your power ring gets near it.....
So many possibilities!
Bravo
I was thinking during the whole video this would be the exact light to use in my Steam Punk Green Lantern Battery. Too bad the bulb was the only thing he didnt leave a link to...

This was shared with me after I asked for help on a theatrical prop and this saved us sooo much headache, heartache, and cable running! We had 3 fire lightbulbs that plugged into extension cords (needed to be moved often/ cable management was a beast!!) Made these up quick, installed the next day, and BOOM!! Thank you thank you! Huge fan of your work, and LOVE that we were able to implement this idea into our show!!

i actually worked on over the garden wall and designed the woodsman’s lamp. it is based on real lamps but has a few differences that make it unique. I’d love to see someone make a screen accurate prop of it. the few cosplays i have seen seem to use standard lamps that aren’t quite right. prop builders of the world you have your marching orders! ha.
@@jimcampbell No way! My wife and I love the show. Great work to you and your team on creating such an endearing story.
As someone who works in the theatre department, I can confirm that we do, indeed, build the insides of lanterns using LEDs, plywood, and hot glue. Also used the tissue paper that they sell with lighting gels as a diffuser - worked brilliantly.
I'm sure it would be more brilliant without the diffuser.. :p
"Build Literally Anything with Adam Savage" is on my bucket list, and its in the top 5.
"Positive to the positive. Negative to the negative. Just double checking. AND, YEP, WE GOT FIRE."
Not normally a good thing when it comes to circuits. ;P
It is when dealing with 12v circuits and you're talking about the power source and the load.
unless your talking about electric ignition.

The swiftness at which he builds is so fun to watch. U can tell adam really enjoys what he does
That looks amazing! Big Clive did some teardowns of those flame effect bulbs a while ago, it's really cool to see them put to good use.
Beat me to it, Clive's channel was the first place I saw these too.
Clive FTW! lol Happy new year guys
With an average of 2500mAh for an alkaline AA battery, they should last about a week to ten days as the LEDs will draw between 15 - 10 mA
If you turn them off whilst you're asleep you can boost their life to 11 - 16 days.
You could connect 4 AA cells in 2 parallel sets of 2 cells in series to double the battery pack's capacity / lifespan. Giving you a month from 4 x AA cells.
@@maxximumb I suppose a timer or light level sensor might be useful for longevity.

I showed this video to my wife, and yes she wants one. I had to order this specific lantern in the US, and paid like 80 bucks with shipping and import tax. We can get those lightbulbs here in germany, sadly they use 12V power, so I had to include a step up circuit. The rest was easy enough to do. So Thank you Adam Savage
Greetings from Germany
He has this nurturing aura like a mother..... And like positive vibes..
Awesome project!
That gaffer trick reminds me that one of these days you really need to do an episode with Mike Okuda, Doug Drexler and Rick Sternbach on all the crazy stuff they and their compatriots did to bring that avalanche of Star Trek shows from the 80s to the 2000s to life and still stay within tight budgets and still deliver those episodes on time, even when two shows were in production at the same time and practically buying supplies out from each other's feet. That crazy bunch used so much tape, you could've probably wrapped the Chrysler building in it.
Please do more of these “how to builds”! Buying a bunch of random things off amazon (or other sites/stores) and creating such a beautiful piece. Absolutely would binge on this for hours on end.
Thank you, Adam. I'm using a build of a prop lantern to teach middle school students about props, construction, and electricity, and this lightbulb hack is saving me from getting 30 Arduino boards and 60' of LED tape. Like, I can get so many more kids this opportunity now.
Jay Leno has his garage & cars and you have the ultimate “Workshop” what a way to relax. 👍👍👍
Adam: This is a how-to video
Me: Awesome. How should i cut my pieces of wood?
Adam: Just so
COOL
P A yes but when you establish at the beginning “I’m going to tell you exactly how to do this” that’s kinda what you should do.
"That hurts" he says, with a tiny smile on his face.
I bought those fire bulbs for my porch lights. Really adds a nice charm to the house.
I find these videos so entertaining because people who are adept at what they're doing are enjoyable to watch--even if you, the viewer, are never going to perform that work; think Norm on New Yankee Workshop. Adam is enjoyable to watch, but he makes it even more entertaining because he always seems like he's doing a build that has to be done an hour ago since they're waiting on the set for the prop to shoot the scene.
Who agrees with me, that we all love the reality of his hair.
With a little modification, some green paint and a green lighting gel, it would make a decent Green Lantern power battery.
There's a link to a colour-changing bulb in one of the other comment threads.
Adam is our modern day Bob Ross. Such pure enthusiasm for what he does. Always inspiring people to go out and make something!
A good technique to get stippling on a piece is to use an airbrush and a paint stir stick. You use the airbrush to spray paint onto the end of the stir stick while angling the stick until it starts to throw paint off the end.
The spray on the window to make that opaqueness was genius
"Positive to the positive, negative to the negative. Yup, just double chcking... aaand we've got fire."
...been there done that.
bet yours wasn't battery-powered though ;-)
20 minutes till work. Could work on prepping or getting there early. Nah I'm watching adam savage make a lantern. And you know what! I love it!
In recent years there have been a lot of fire bans when and where I've gone camping. Something like this would add to the atmosphere in a brilliant fashion, without the danger. And it's kid/pet safe too. I think I need a couple.
What about turning one of the laterns into a projector? remove the side glass add speakers. And you have a portable movie theater that looks awesome.
@JmeTN Clumsy CraftsYou should do the project you imagined. thats one of the thing I love about tested is that we can all put our ideas out there and maybe inspire someone else like Adam and the team does for us.
@JmeTN Clumsy Crafts When I seen the video i instantly thought of making a green lantern lantern. It would make a great display piece in a home cinema room whether it's an actual projector for the movies or as an actual lamp.
@@alexhetherington8028 Was my first thought as well. but now that I know they are easy to find old hood style, Lamp say hello to Green Paint.
How I would do this is find a way to use one of those LG 4k protectors that looks like a rectangular tube and sits on the floor because I suspect with some creativity one could find a way to hide that, put the reflector up inside the lantern housing while keeping the optical assembly in the projector and then hide the projector in some kinda fancy looking coffee table Rather than trying to stuff low grade projector hardware into a lantern you have the projector firing up into and then out of the lantern.
I only suggest this LG because it has a mirror by default its onboard firmware can flip an image, I suspect if you tried to mirror a normal projector you would get everything reversed.
I personally could not afford to do this idea I said above but it comes off to me as the best way to get a lantern projector and not have to figure out how to stick projector hardware into a lantern. faking it is half of prop builds I feel.

Thank you for an amazing build.
So many detailed information, I will watch again. Love the finish.
Going to get me a step drill, have seen it on Laura's videos. I will use its on my planters for drainage.
I am probably your oldest fan, grew up in South Africa and living in the UK, very claustrophobic...
In the 60s girls were very limited in what they were supposed to do. Teacher or some academic stuff, ended up with cottage industry doing a lot of scroll sawing.
68 and have discovered CZcams and it is super fascinating, so inventive and practical that I can understand and be really entertained with a smile.
Velcro very clever, got to get some.
Thank you and God bless
These would be a fun and easy project to do because my dad has a bunch of actual antique train lanterns. My grandpa used to work for the railroad and collected train memorabilia. We got stuck with his ungodly amount of train stuff after he died, lanterns included.
Love how the shop employees are going on about their jobs, while the boss fools around on the internet! Very cool build, Adam. More "how to's" would not be a bad thing for 2020. Cheers!
Except that fooling around on the Internet IS the job, while making things off camera is just personal time.
That Velcro stuff is basically Command picture hanging strips in a roll
of those picture hanging strips are over-priced pre-cut velcro...
I watch the One Day Build videos to learn the techniques Adam uses on various projects. Not necessarily what he is building but the process’s he uses throughout the build is what makes the video worth a thorough watch
Saw Adam speak in Pittsburgh and he did not disappoint. Wonderful build as always
Please do far more one day builds in 2020!
I think twice monthly would be good.
I have one of those fire bulbs in my exterior porch lamp. Makes it look like a ye olde oil lamp.
Such a great video to watch. But-
You built a vintage lamp tarnished to look like it is found in the yard today. But during the actual service the trainman and the rikshawman used to keep the mirror and the glasses clean and tidy. There would be some reddish tone and shiny metal on the body by constantly brushing on clothes and hand wiping.
This man is an American treasure.
MORE OF THESE SO GOOOOOOOD!
Saw this last night, was going to comment a mini fogger would add some heat, and smoke effect.
Has more tools in shop than any one person needs, uses needle nose plyers to tighten nut on switch, ive been there and done that LOL, some times you just get excited to see something done.
I don’t know why I’m so addicted to these videos
I have to admit, I love these videos. every time you start to do something where I go "why is he doing that??", Then I see where your going with it and I go "OOOH, that's brilliant!"
Fun fact about the "velcro", about 10 years ago I had some Lego set, or it possibly was part of the Lego Mindstorms Competition toolset that we got at school in the robotics club, was 2 by 2 stud sized squares of this very same velcro, and I still have 53 of these one sided velcro squares. I love these. I have used these for many things in the past.
Also, I have bought the same "Fire LED lamp" as the one you are using, that was an impulse purchase after I watched Bigclivedotcom's video about it. xD
Not missing many components to make the same lamp as you are.
I was thinking the same about the velcro. My team used it to secure the brain and power distribution board on our FRC robot.
Ive been rolling around ideas in my head for these fire bulbs. they are great bulbs and being LED you just showed the best thing about them. they are not running off house hold voltage but are reduced in voltage.
Thanks man. I love you bud. You're my reason to be more than the sum of my parts. I cannot thank you more. Ever following your example. You're truly the best example of humanity I've ever had.
I'm surprised Adam has never seen one of those fire bulbs :D I've had one in my room since I was a kid. Also, that velcro is called Dual-Lock!
I've seen it sold on Amazon as Hook and Loop, used some of it to make a bigger strap for my old Yugioh duel disk from the first series, the one with the split and join action. It didn't have the sticky back though for making hangers or anything like that..just a solid strip roll of the stuff.
"Since I was a kid". So... last week? A year ago? 15 years ago? Sorry, just one of my pet peeves.
ShinKyuubi hook and loop is just another name for standard Velcro. One side is “hooks” the other “loops”.
This is different and would technically be “hook and hook” as each side is stiff, split “loops”
Also sold under the brand names “EZPass”, “Dual-Lock”, etc.
@@treborrrrr I am 24. I knew someone would ask, but I figured that I could maybe get away with it :D

Dunno about 20,000 but apparently enough of them at least for Amazon's algorithm to put the AA battery holders and the switches in the "Frequently bought together" recommendations.
@@sharkuc - I love that
Lantern is sold out too
Had to pause at 14:52 and make a comment before you go any further. When you first pulied the mirror out, I was Leary. But the addition of the aluminum tape to replace the mirror made total sense. It dirties up the reflection a little bit and doesn't look as clean. Which it would not if that were actual fire in that Lantern. And then almost recklessly adding black paint to the edge also "soots" up the mirror a little bit adding to the realism. Brilliant move sir. Now back to the video.
Yeah that Velcro stuff is the cat’s pajamas. I had used some at my old job and began to come up with useful ways to utilize it around the house. I stuck a power strip to the back of my tv stand so if I moved the stand, I wouldn’t have to drag the strip and all the cords with it. The adhesive on those bad boys is super strong too!
this would be fantastic for an "over the garden wall wirt" cosplay
Nice lamp, Adam.
Got a question. You love to age and weather your builds, how does that play out when the weathered piece becomes authentically old?
Here in the south, a staple of old homes is their gas lantern at the entrance of the house and driveway, I would need to add a photocell, but I could do two lanterns for the driveway using this build! And as a bonus I could use these flame lights I have been wanting to use for years! So excited for this!
A lightsaber blade with that chip and LED's would be incredible.
Forget the build. I wanna know about those wire strippers! I've never seen strippers that work so effortlessly.
WHERE CAN I GET THEM?
Same, I want, I got very excited when Adam said everything was linked in the description. But no tools ☹️
Knipex wire strippers?
Look back in the tested feed. It was on the list of favorite things for one of the contributors.
Wurth tools make a set like that fairly cheap and good quality for the money
If one of Adam’s new favorite things was shown to him by the prop master on the new ghostbusters... I’m guessing we’ll be seeing some behind the scenes content from the new ghostbusters?
Is it just me or does Adam open stuff like freaking crazy
Watching this in April 2021, it is amazing how much better your lighting is, now. Plus, I automatically look for the new workbench and the rolling planer/spindle sander cart.
