Adam Savage's One Day Builds: A Fake Can of Beans!
Vložit
- čas přidán 4. 02. 2020
- Adam helps out his friend, writer Amber Ruffin, who recently tweeted a photo of her couch leg replaced with a can of kidney beans. To help give her couch some support, Adam replicates that can out of a piece of poplar wood, making use of some of his favorite woodworking tools in the shop. The replica looks pretty convincing!

What an awesome way to help a friend as well as a conversation piece! I did something similar a few years back, a friend of mine brought me a cabinet door from his man cave and wanted me to paint something/anything on it representing my artwork, I had that thing for like 2 years and he finally came to me and said “look if you’re not going to paint it, that’s fine, I need it back because I have a party coming up and it looks odd having one cabinet door missing” and that’s exactly when I realized what to paint on it. I painted the door to look as if it was still gone, ie shelves and stuff on the shelves, some paint drips from paint cans on a higher shelf etc. it turned out very nice and when he came to pick it up, his only response was “you &$*%”!

@justin miller the nonsense isn't meant in a bad way. I mean that he gets excited over things that just lag sense to many people, like a wooden can as a upholder for a couch.

Spoiler: he wanted to make a wooden can of beans but he's a perfectionist so he machined a steel can, filled it with actual cooked beans, designed and printed the label to be perfectly identical to a store-bought one. It took twelve iterations and 27 days of work to get it just right, but it cost less than 500 dollars, so it's a win.

I had to laugh "ironically" when the pull tab hit the floor. In my studio... anything that hits the floor has a 75% chance to be lost forever. "The Floor is my Enemy."
I couldn't believe how quickly he pulled out his torch and was on the floor looking for it.
When I used to work in a welding machine repair shop, it was a "shut down the shop" moment any time you dropped a case screw. Each company has very specific screws for their metal covers and you don't have time to wait a week on new screws to come in. So we would all be crawling around on the floor in this nasty shop to find this tiny screw.

I remember coffee cups like that. They were actually ceramic, but looked like plastic, a bit bent out of shape. They still worked as cups, so why not?
I really love that Adam is sometimes kinda afraid of the table saw. He recognizes how dangerous it is and acts accordingly. I find it fantastic when someone with that level of experience still understands and respects the danger of what their working with
Most people: "Oh, my friend's couch leg is bad, I'll go buy another one." Adam: "Hmm, she's using a can of beans to hold up her couch, i know, I'll make a fake can of beans that has a lot more structural support.". I want to take a walk through Adam's psyche sometime. :D
Hey, he gave her a PERMANENT solution to replace what was a temporary fix - what's weird about that?
How on Earth could you not see what the weird part is? 😂
@@Loccyster Really, I see NOTHING weird on permanent, custom-made solutions to problems

Out of everything in this video, the hairdryer mated to a third-hand in conjunction with the lazy susan paint table just blew my mind.
One thing I've wondered when that shows up in videos: Is that actually a hairdryer, or a heat gun?
Brooks Moses he has said it is a hair dryer
@@BrooksMoses It's a hair dryer! In fact, it's one of the hair dryers used for the hovercraft in Adam and Michael Stevens's live show from a few years ago, Brain Candy.
@@zachary3352 and absolutjackal: Thanks! It's great that it has a story to go with it. I have a heat gun that looks a lot like it, but it might be too intense for paint-drying.

I can't guarantee this dryer is one of the stage-used ones, but when I saw Brain Candy they were using the same model. So this one is either a stage-used one or one of Adam's spares.

Art is AN EXPLOSION
Adam Savage radiates passion.. Everytime you see him doing something, he smiles and geeks out all the time. I love you Adam, you inspire me to DO stuff, to create ! haha. But what I love, funny enough, about those videos, those one day builds.. Is the lack of musics. It makes the whole thing feeling more authentic, every little machine and work sound, every breath, you ARE in the workshop with him.
Sign behind Adam at the lathe: "Wear Safety Glasses"
Adam: Wearing safety glasses on his head.
Well he is wearing them. So what if it isn't quite the right way
Look, there's an unspoken rule in the shop. You're ultimately responsible for your own safety. That being said, there are aspects of the job that require a less strict observation of the rules.
I'm ultimately guilty of this too
The sign should have been more specific
Any one else laugh along with Adam on those parts when you know he is like he says pretty pleased with the outcome of his build?
Adam Savage has become my new favorite human being.... This channel is pure gold....
Adam Savage is the Bob Ross of building, he is really calm (mostly) and is great at building, and it's nice to relax to his vids.

The cleanliness and organization of Adam's shop shows how passionate he is and how much respect he has for his trade.
I'm glad you signed it. I was wondering if you would. Someday she may fix the couch, someday she will definitely get rid of it. But she will never give up her fake can o beans from Adam Savage.
Commenters: Wonder what happened to Adam's finger...
Adam: stops a spinning lathe with his hand.
Around 5:55 his finger is okay, next shot (the second cut on the table saw) he has a plaster. My guess his table saw bit him.
Why doesn't his saw have a guard or a riving knife?
@@maxximumb My guess is no riving knife because it's up against a wall and the riving knife could make it harder to remove a piece without it getting caught up and possibly leading to a kickback. I also guess no guard because inevitably a guard means less safe material holding just to get the material past the guard when working with anything that isn't a flat piece of wood.
Not a good habit to get into.. No foot brake??
From what I've seen, Adam is a man that preaches safety and rarely follows his own advice. Example 1: He wears his safety goggles for about a minute, puts them up to inspect his work and then leaves them up because he's likely forgotten he even had them!
@@MrJackandEmily I've never seen a tablesaw with a footbrake. I have seen electric motors with internal brakes, but have not seen one of those on a tablesaw.

here in the UK i've spent years specialising in education and teaching carpentry to student courses. i've been involved for about 5 years now. and MY teacher has been doing it for 30+ years. and hes always used japanese tools mixed with british techniques and projections, etc.
the one adam is using in the video is specifically a dovetail saw, and its probably one of the most versatile. there are a multitude of shapes and their uses. the best thing about the japanese saws in my opinion is the grip. and the accuracy achieved with it. and when making my own tool boxes they're essential becuase the cut is so thin because the blade is so thin its almost a seemless cut every time. so i can make a fully enclosed box and cut the doors out and you'd never know.
thats just one of their uses.
anywho. they are a hidden gem in the world of tools and to think it changed a man's life so much that he used them for 30 years then proceeded to teach students to use them is a testiment to how good they are.
