    Now here's a paradox - there's no question the 2 amp setup sounds better but the crunch from 4 pedals actually sounds a little more faithful to the Royal Blood tone to me

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 7 lety +2

      Yes I think you're absolutely right - RB used a Zvex Mastotron on the first album which is a fuzz pedal. That pushes the sound beyond the distortion of the amp that I personally prefer, but of course he has 2 guitar amps so one can help make the fuzz sound better.

    • @timmarsh6019

      It may be a live rig/ recording rig thing for them- either way I just went out to get the pedals!

    4 pedals 1 amp sounds clearer to me :)

  • @reverendprophet
    @reverendprophet Před 8 lety +18

    If you could combine both sounds it would be pretty epic! (4 pedals / 2 amps?)
    To my ear, 2 amps sounds more organic. The 4 pedal 1 amp version sounds more synthetic.
    Great video!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 8 lety +4

      Thanks man, you've read my mind! I'm hoping to do a video soon with the two sounds mixed :) I totally agree - I've tried a few other pedals since then to get more of a guitar amp sound, but from what I've found, nothing beats having a dedicated amp with a speaker cone designed for guitar frequencies, rather than combining the synthetic sounds in the bass speakers.

  • @renangoncalvesflores
    @renangoncalvesflores Před 8 lety +13

    1 amp sounds clearer BUT also sounds very compressed. It's kinda the Big Muff dilema: alone in your house sounds awesome, but in a live situation it easilly gets lost between bass and cymbals. I think I would go with 2 amps for I like the low frequencies clear, with no effects and rich in harmonics.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 8 lety +3

      I couldn't agree more - I've had more success with amp simulation in the 1 amp setup, but the fact that the guitar amp's speaker response range is designed for guitar frequencies means it's always going to handle the sound better.

  • @JMR120600
    @JMR120600 Před 9 lety +39

    Definately the 2 amp setup sounds superior

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 9 lety +3

      JMR120600 I agree. It was quite a challenge to get a single bass amp to get both guitar and bass tones at the same time without one of them sounding awful. The 'guitar' distortion through the bass amp sounds too bassy and yet not quite as full bodied IMHO. Separating the job using speakers that were made for the right frequencies is still the best method.

    • @JMR120600
      @JMR120600 Před 9 lety +1

      Yeah, also there is generally a more flexible tone in having 2 amps, seperate tone, EQ and so on.

    • @JMR120600
      @JMR120600 Před 9 lety +1

      Alexander Wright Another thing i've noticed is with the 1 amp setup theres a pretty distracting drone on the distortion from the "guitar" so yeah, definately the 2 amp setup is far superior.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 9 lety

      JMR120600 Yeh that might be because I've added too much OD on the pedal - it's interesting though because when I was playing them, the guitar amp gave off a similar noise, but just higher pitched, so maybe my mics filtered it out...

    Thanks for making these videos, you have a great way of explaining what can be confusing set ups. The red/green cable is a great idea. Thanks!

  • @MrOwl888
    @MrOwl888 Před 2 lety +1

    Alexander, thank you for the video! And for the previous two ("2 pedals 2 amplifiers" and "4 pedals 1 amplifier"). Other CZcamsrs, in my opinion, have overcomplicated their set-ups "like Royal Blood". (One has a cool expensive guitar processor with a bunch of SEND-RETURN loops, and connected to it: 2 octavers, an equalizer, 2 distortion and some pedal that I can't identificate :) )
    You have both options technically simple and inexpensive, so that almost anyone in their country could repeat, if not on these pedals so on similar ones.
    If need to choose which one is better, then I like the first option more because of the two amps, in the second version there is only one amp and it does not give out all the guitar frequencies. But there is Muff there.
    I wanted to ask: what if "mini POG" is replaced with "EHX Pitch Fork+"? There are also 3 voices on this pedal (one is clean and two pitches are tuned). You can additionally make one of the tunable voices "one octave up" and the second - "P5 interval" for a denser "guitar" sound.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words Mr Owl! Knowing I've helped people out makes it all worthwhile :) I haven't used a Pitchfork myself but I have heard great things about them, and being able to add in the 5th interval is something I would be very interested in. I would guess that the pitchfork would be more useful than the POG if you wanted to use it specifically for Royal Blood style playing. The only thing to note is that it doesn't have two outputs, so you would need to split the signal using a different pedal (like the ABY pedals or Boss LS2).

    • @MrOwl888
      @MrOwl888 Před 2 lety +1

      @@AlexanderWright , Yes, Pitch Fork has one output and you need to put an ABY pedal in front of it. But I meant Pitch Fork + (or Pitch Fork Plus). This is the same PItch Fork but with two independent pitch shifters and two outputs. Moreover, it has a flexible routing system and you can configure which signal will go through which output.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 2 lety +1

      @@MrOwl888 oh wow I hadn't even seen that one before - it looks like it has a lot of great features all in one pedal! Also has an expression pedal socket so could potentially do some whammy pitch shifting or blending the signals on the fly. Very impressive

      I found that was too inflexible for when I wanted to just play bass on its own so now I use an ABY pedal. If you want a nice cheap setup, I think the EHX switchblade+ and the Mooer Tender octaver gives you pretty much exactly the same sound as my POG for under $150 :)

    Amazing video Alexander! I've been following your videos for quite a bit and I got definitely stunned by your signal paths and the alternatives to achieve the sound. I liked both sounds but I think the main difference is whilst the 2 amp 2 pedal setting sounds actually like Royal Blood the 4 pedal 1 amp setting sound a little bit more like The White Stripes, reminded me of 'Blue Orchid' sound.
    Cheers!

    Does everyone know that he uses guitar strings in his bass? In a interview he did with fender he said he uses guitar strings and bass strings...idk...i haven't seen anyone try that yet...maybe it's just me.. but maybe that makes a difference?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 6 lety +1

      Very good point! Yeah he said he uses 2 guitar and 2 bass strings - I don't know whether that's the reason he uses short scale basses (to actually fit the guitar strings on). That probably really helps the tone as well - the bass parts played on the bass strings and the guitar riffs on the guitar strings. I definitely wouldn't want to play fingerstyle using that setup!

  • @sylvainbournais3961
    @sylvainbournais3961 Před 9 lety +1

    Its quite difficult to choose which sound better, but i think i prefer the 2 pedals 2 amps when there is a drum, and 4 pedals 1 amp when drum is less present. Have you tried an ODB3 for distorsion?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 9 lety +1

      ***** that's a very interesting point! I agree that the presence of the drums changes my perception of how the distortions sound. Yeh, I've tried a couple of pedals (no video comparisons though) - the ODB3, the Bass Big Muff, the Boss DS1. In this case, I avoided the Bass overdrive/distortion/fuzz because the bass specific pedals deliberately keep the low end, and I wanted to make the +1 octave effect sound more like a guitar :)

    listening again ! the two amps has an high freq overtone to it ,which is more noticeable when the bass is off .. compared to the 1 amp ...i,ve entered a tin of worms arrgh .

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 8 lety

      +Discordinated brad lee haha! Yeh the guitar amp is more likely to accentuate the high frequency overtones because it has the smaller speaker cones - some might say that's a good thing as it sounds more like a real guitar, but it's all down to preference. I also think the slight reverb I've set on the Marshall amp helps thicken the sound up too (I've started putting a reverb pedal after my SansAmp GT2 for the 1 amp setup now). Being completely honest, I prefer the sound of the 2 amp setup, but I'm trying to get something just as good with 1 amp because I really don't want to carry 2 amps round with me!

      Sangsom Gilbert I made it man - got some unofficial drum tab PDF, typed it all into guitar pro, exported as a midi and then converted the midi into a decent sounding WAV using Reaper and a free VSTi called SuperDrumFX.
      I have been asked this question before, but I've not done it myself. I've heard examples of how the VI works with a similar setup and you can get a VERY mean sound from it - also the chords track really well on the POG so they sound amazing :)

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 9 lety

      Michael Stoneham thanks man :) I've had my fair share of multi effects in my time (Zoom 506, Line 6 Bass POD etc etc) but I could never get the sound I wanted from them. I specifically moved to stomp boxes so I could understand what all the individual effects actually did, and now I probably wouldn't go back to a multiFX pedal to be honest. I was tempted by the boss ME range for bass (if only to save my back!), but despite all these videos, I don't use bass effects very much at all so haven't looked into it.

      @AlexanderWright  Před 9 lety

      +Phill Childs thanks Phil, glad you're enjoying them :) If your amp has dual in/outputs then that setup will work just fine. The 10 inch bass speakers will easily handle the guitar frequencies, but might be a bit bassy compared to guitar speakers, so just try and EQ it appropriately.

    haha what an ideal song for demon-stration . amp sounds way more bassey

      +Discordinated brad lee haha absolutely :) yeh, running a guitar distortion though a bass amp dowsn't get around the fact that the bass amp itself will sound more boomy - in the newer vids in this series, I try using a guitar amp simulator pedal to see if that fixes it :)

    I actually happened to come across this by chance while listening to Royal Blood. Two amps sounds better.

      Not a problem. I do have one question though for someone who doesn't play the same style as Royal Blood. Do you think this set up could work for a metalcore style?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 8 lety

      +Viper_4115 to be honest, as long as you want to play riff based music where the guitar and bass play exactly the same thing, then this will work - it's not suitable for playing a guitar riff / solo and having a counter melody on the bass, but if you plan on using it to make it sound like there's a rhythm guitar in there, then it will work just fine :)

      @viper_4115 Před 8 lety +1

      I was thinking using it for rhythm.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 8 lety

      +Viper_4115 yeh that should really beef up your sound then! A lot of people seem to want to use this setup to add in some rhythm when their guitarist is taking a solo. I'm sure that's how the band domination plans start anyway ;)

      Agreed. In my opinion, the sound is more distinct from the bass, so it sounds better.

    4 pedals 1 amp sounds like ur playing thru a pop can

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  Před 4 lety

      Haha! That could be due to my choice of pedals rather than the 1 amp setup, although I do prefer 2 amps regardless :)

      FRANKY C haha! Agreed. But it depends if you want to carry an extra amp to a gig rather than a couple of extra pedals ;)
