    Great vid. However most of this is coming from a fanboy perspective. And fails to understand #sarcasm. The intro specifically embodies that, using the word Zed for example, the choice of clothes shoes, leaf spring discussion, and of course the Balsa wood floor all underlying sarcasm. But GM is also the same company who creatively and cleaverly makes excuses for cost cutting all the time in marketing like most companies. (C8 has coil springs now and other companies figured out how to lower hood line without having to use leaf springs)
    So to clarify in our area (midwest) the C5 and the owners are a big stereotype and mostly true. The car has almost no cool factor at all, from a budget Grand Prix/Grand Am style interior chosen to save cost not weight, you see them everywhere usually in base spec with an automatic. The C5 does not feel special objectively. However as said, in terms of performance it blows away cars like the S2000, the Euro cars of the era. So if you are looking for that reliable fast car with simple 90s appeal this is it. But there are other cars from this era that had a bit more passion behind their design. The C5 has very little emotion unless you are that die hard fan of GM and vettes.

      A C5 Z06 has no "passion"? It's arguably one of the best driver's cars of the era. Please stop reviewing cars; you're completely delusional and biased. You know nothing about cars except for the ones you own and prefer. Please research why C8 has coil springs now; it's because they couldn't package leaf springs in the mid engine design, you sheep. And what say you about the Ferrari F40, original Acura NSX, Supra, Porsche 996 911 etc. underwhelming interiors? Such a hypocrite.

    I love my C5 Z!!! I didn't buy it for luxury or for impressing the ladies. I bought it because of what's under the hood all the way to the exhaust. Corvettes C1-C6 have never had great interiors. That wasn't GM's focus. It was built to go fast and that's what it does. People who knock these gorgeous machines don't understand true Vette owners and never will.

    I too own a black C5Z and I couldn’t agree more with everything you said in this video. It’s amazing how many people underestimate this car, but the truth is GM put an insane amount of though and engineering into the Z, and when you tell people who own GTRs C7s, or M cars about the thin glass, titanium exhausts, carbon hoods, HUD, etc...they can’t believe this was all in a car that’s now almost 20 years old. It truly was a feat of engineering back then and still to this day, offers unrivaled rawness and a “true drivers car” experience that very few modern cars could ever dream of doing. Great video. You’ve earned a big thumbs up and new sub from me!

    I owned a 2004 Corvette Z06 and I do appreciate you filling in gaps which SG left out. For example, that they removed all the sound deadening to save weight as well as thinner windshield glass and a titanium exhaust. On the 2004 Z06 Commemorative Edition they even went with a carbon fiber hood, a first for Corvettes at the time. I believe this has been said by others but the C5 Corvette is arguably one of the most underappreciated cars of its era. Especially when you take in how much BETTER it was than the C4. The biggest issue with both the C5 and C4 is they made a CRAP TON of them so I don't ever see them as gaining momentum as a collector, excluding the C5Z and ZR1 and Grand Sport from the C4 gen.

    Understand we C5 Z06 folks have been defending the performance and intent of the car since day 1. When I drove my C5 Z off the dealer lot in 2002 the easiest way to shut the critics up was to simply say “bring it”.
    Since day 1 the C5Z has been dancing toe to toe with peer sports card of the day - be it Viper ACR, Mustang Cobra R, 911 Turbo, Ferrari 360CS, NSX or Gallardo.
    Street, strip, auto cross or road course we could hold our own.
    The only place the euro snobs beat us was purchase price and cost of repairs.
    And let’s not forget the C5R dominated in completion from day 1.

A video with the reach his has, can have a toxic consequence, so it was important to me, to balance out and show the facts. In his comment to me, he states I am a fanboi of the car. If we take his opinion as true, that Im a fanboi, then i think I'd be equally fair to trust me in saying he is a hater...that puts us in balance. With both our videos out there, people should be able to see the the facts for themselves now, in balance; which was my goal.

    I want to thank you for being the kind of rational well educated car guy who understands that a 20 year old platform should not be judged by current standards but by what it was in it's day, and how well it compares to those standards now. The C5 is a Milestone of engineering that only recently has been eclipsed by the C8. The C7 and C6 were just improvements on the C5 standard, and while they have a niche in the lexicon of Corvette lore , are just filler between the C5 and C8.

      Yeah, the C5-C7 Is going to be quite an era for the car. The capability was proven, the value factor, etc. C8 has a lot to live up to for enthusiats. I dont think simple speed and performance gives it a win...its going to need to match all the factors that Dave Hills architecture accomplished...generally high performance and reliability, good value proposition that just packed the used market with options. C8 presents new challenges for shadetree guys and people building cars on jack stands. The DCT will have to be reliable at higher power levels and on track or building these cars is going to become a deeper pockets venture than it currently is, even as they trickle down in price, in the used maret. Time will tell but...C5-C7 locked in a human generation of used performance and track cars for decades to come, regardless. Thanks for watching

I have owned MANY cars of this nature. 996/911, 335is jb4 tuned, 09 Viper, Kenne Bell blown Mustang etc... Doesn't have a shitty IMS bearing like my 911 that blew and cost 12k to fix, Doesn't have constant check engine lights/ vacuum leaks, wastegate problems, turbo failures, high pressure fuel pump failures like the BMW. Catastrophic engine failure on the Viper that I redlined maybe 1/2 dozen times or so . Don't get me started on the Por(sha) which was a constant ass ache. Left me stranded, the interior melted on a hot day, coils constantly blew, more check engine lights than the BMW not nearly as fast and looked decent at best. I love cars and always try new things. The c5 z06 all around is the best PERFORMANCE bang for your buck out there period. Mine has txsp cam, ported and polished heads, long tubes and a great tune. It is 440 whp, weighs 3,000 pounds, out handles all of them, faster than most of them, more comfortable than all of them....never breaks and takes more abuse than all of them put together. It's decent looking, gets alot of thumbs up and sounds absolutely terrifying at redline. That's what these cars are all about...power, handling and FUN! As a Corvette owner (C2 327, C4ZR1, C6 LS3, C7 Z51, and now C5Z in order) I gotta say the interior is what put me off the C5 and its what I still hate about it. I ended up swapping the seats, the steering wheel, the shifter, the seatbelts, completely re-did the carpet and insulation, and flocked my dashboard. Then swapped out the head unit for a double din one. I can't stand the look of the climate control and I'm working on a faceplate for it now.
    I really wish I could put a C6 dashboard and C7 center console in the car but honestly just a nice center console with a usable or no cupholder would be nice. Then the door panels...I would like to move the buttons from the panels to the center but honestly some Porsche style ones with storage and a pull strap with SWITCHES instead of buttons would have me extremely happy. I think swapping the vent styles would also be nice.
    I use the Corvette as a track/car meet car. I daily drive and autocross my S2000 and also have a Lexus 400h for a daily too. I really considered replacing my Corvette with a 987.2 Cayman S for the money.
    I have had the E92 335i and it's horrifying to own. I can DIY and mine with a solid tune, upgraded turbos etc... It was gaskets, water pumps and such that drove me crazy. I think the C5Z is still over valued by many owners who think it will be collectable. A lot of owners believe it's worth more because it wasn't driven or so on. It's $15k for most and $20k for BringAtrailer like new pristine all documentation cars.
    I'll take a 5.3L swapped Miata with a Getrag diff over a C5Z but at my age (26) I can't insure it as a personal car. I could use it for my business but I want to drive my cars more often. I think these are going to briefly go up in value then go down. It's mass produced and the Z06 isn't much better than a C5 on the road when it comes to modifications. It's a cam and heads away from a C5. There are other differences but not enough to set it THAT far ahead.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety

      5.3 S2k maybe, Miata a little small for me. I built a Miata back in the day...1.8 swapped it, lots of suspension and tire...fun car, but too small. Hard to beat a C5Z for the cost and the starting point you get out of it, as a platform to mod on. BMW's, especially the 3 series...the interiors definitely fall apart...mostly the headliner and pillars, a lot of delam on door panels.
      Geese wants to impress the friends though...so...best car I could think of that has that "oh how impressive" if you're friends are all rust belt or midwest jobs who think owning a euro car means you've made it in life.
      Love the S2k...owned one for years, along side this C5Z back when I was supercharged. Still could step out of the C5Z at 580whp and jump in the S2k and have a great drive...totally different car.

    Admittedly, the SavageGeese video got my nose slightly out of joint. It seemed like they took the easy way out with all the pot-shots at the C5Z... and its owners... the same tired old clichés. You'll be old one day too! (if you're lucky!) After I sold my Backdraft Racing Cobra replica back in 2016 (all-aluminum 427 Windsor stroker... 612 hp/615 tq), I lasted a year before I went shopping for another toy. I bought an '04 C5Z from the original owner with 8600 miles on it. Relative to the Cobra, I found it supremely comfortable & much more livable, not to mention efficient. And what a blast to drive... docile around town, but when you lay into the pedal, it just takes off like a rocket. I guess they couldn't do another praising video... Doug DeMuro already did that.

      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety

      Yeah, the reliability factor of the LS platform and the c5/c6 is what makes it an easy decision over even mid 2000 bmw's. E46 began the era of the weekly problem plague. If you're somewhat savvy and have the bavarian tool most of it is manageable but never-the-less, a pain. Even when my Z06 was supercharged...it was basically gas and oil and pound the hell out of it...never skipped a beat.

Does that video show sarcasm? Yeah, it reeks of it, it's funny and the sock down the pants thing and sailors hat was hilarious. Sadly, that was probably the best part of the video. The rest... not so much. Are they biased? Definitely. They sound like a pair of guys that aimed to find fault in it and blow it all up out of proportion. I can find fault in anything too, but why? Am I a fan boy? Up until 2 weeks ago I asn't, but now I sure am... and the interior did not deter me from forking over my hard earned cash... and I saw that video way before. Now? I can see how off their entire assessment was after living with the real thing for a couple of weeks and 2000 miles. You can call me a fan boy *now* and I'd agree with you. Relative to +Savagegeese ... he knows what he is doing. He does know his cars. He chooses to sometimes present in a cynical matter. For myself, I was quite upset at this specific video, not for how he did it, but because I know he can do better. He knows it has F/R dual A-arms. He knows it is a good autoX car (hell, it destroyed SS for the longest time). I am just upset there was nothing positive or redeeming about his skit.

    Those 235i's are great alternative too for under $20k. They are surprisingly cheap for the performance

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety +1

      235i's are at 3400+lbs, and are pulling 22k+ on avg at this point. So, it exceeds the 20k mark of the video. Even if you did procure a high mile 235i, the power/weight vs a C5Z is a no comparison...C5Z will destroy a 235i in track performance. The 335i example I gave targeted a 10k'ish purchase price then 10k for mods to get the car in a power/weight/handling range that would give a somewhat similar experience to the C5Z stock, but with a better interior. I think you'd have to put 5-10k in mods to the 235i to even come close to a C5Z on track (but still would lose), and at that point, you're in C6Z money, which again will destroy the modded 235i AND has a mildly better interior. thanks for watching and commenting man...good points and questions, thanks!

      @@KnightDriveTV Oh yes, taking all the track work into the equation there is no comparison!! The interior issues with the C5 and C6 are so overblown it has gotten annoying. OK yes the C5 steering wheel and gauges are not my favorite (neither is the C6 steering wheel), but like you said, light weight materials make for a light weight car. You have to give up something somewhere, at least their stuff works and is supported by GM decades later for replacement parts.

    Thank you for this response video. The “tongue & cheek” (intro only) savage geese video was about as cliché as a review can get. The potential for an intriguing and thought provoking review was there. However spewing the very well know idiosyncrasies of the almost two decade old C5 Z06 in a 2019 video appeared to be such a lazy approach. SG has really set forth some excellent automotive content, perhaps that’s why I was let down.

    My complaint was they uttered the phrase "Miata" in that review. No need to explain how offensive that was. You keep emphasizing weight, "mass", as being important. Something tells me you don't do a lot of racing of your car, especially roll racing. It's really power on the streets. You need to see a C7 Z06 take off from a roll, or maybe a late model Mustang Gt, or just race a bunch of people from the seat of a stock C5, and I can tell you, power and torque are 1000x more important than weight. It is not until you get down to motorcycle weight that weight will win. Just my own experience, owning 3 Corvettes now. My only other opinion is just the "pandemic pricing" car economy we are in today. I can't get parts for my C6, even from GM. And people are asking way too much for even super high mileage sports cars of every year. I wish I had kept my C5 Z16, at the $27k I paid for it with 1000 miles on the odometer. When I sold that car at about 30k miles, the interior was perfect. The exterior the same, every inch of it like new after being stored outdoors in Virginia for 7 years. My C6, I can't say the same for at all. Great video! Thanks.

    Sir, I recently purchased a mint 96 Corvette CE edition with the LT-1 auto. I love the car but am thinking about a C5 Z06. The only reason I did not initially buy the latter one is that I am a below the knee amputee (as of a few years ago) and wondered about my ability to drive one comfortably. I know how to drive a manual (many sports cars) and have since drove lesser manuals successfully. I believe this option is now a go. Is there another site where I can reach you through email or quieter communication? I am worried about the cost investing in the C4 not paying off nearly as much as the C5 LS engine/chassis base. I love both cars and enjoyed your other video on the white C4 lowered. Take Care!!

      I actually had a Miata yrs back that I built...way way tighter in a Miata. I had an s2000 next, definitely better. We have this C5Z and the 09 C6...C5Z fit is great, even with a helmet on. I am 6'2, 250 and have absolutely no issues. C7's start to feel tight like am s2k did, but C5 us good to go, C6 gets slightly tighter and lose headroom. C5, in its design was actually made to accommodate this engineer that was 6'6 on the Corvette team. From there, Corvettes got smaller inside.

    Kind of commenting about the savage geese retorts and yours....if you have had the luxury to drive over 100,000$ dollars car(s) and then hop in a c5 your basis of comparison would be far jaded then lets say someone that has owned a 350z/370z a 5.0 mustang, turboed 4 banger, etc when jumping in a corvette c5. Its all perspective of what you have driven in which returns the level of authenticity in how you evaluate a cars "ranking." For instance matt farah from the smoking tire has driven 100s if not 1000's of stock and modified vehicles and Im sure he can appreciate a c5 being that he does own one. The more cars you have driven then the more specificity in how they resonate with you but In my opinion in some degree muddies the water on appreciating vehicles that are obtainable buy the average salary like a c5. Of all vehicles corvettes c5/c6/c7 seems to hold their value a hell of a lot better then most other vehicles.
