      I've been watching your videos, and love the channel. Keep up the good work. I have a question though, or rather want your opinion. I picked up a C5 Z06 that is in stock form back in march, and have been looking into a new shifter. Alot of people say to go with the MGW, but I have tried a friends and am not a fan of how short the throws are. It's almost too much. I heard that the 2009+ C6 Z06 shifter is a good middle ground, or rather an adequate replacement that reduces the throw a bit, and cleans up the stock shifter problems. If I'm not mistaken, that is the shifter I spotted in your car too. What is your opinion, as you are someone with years and firsthand knowledge, and I value that. Keep making videos, the quality is awesome, and the detail to the information about the cars is great. (Especially the Z, I'm a fan of it if you hadn't noticed) Anyway if you take the time to read this, Thanks.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety +6

      Yeah, I definitely wanted to work in a range to avoid any contact, get minimal poke for visual reasons, etc. These cars are great, once you tweak them a little, they're even better. It's why the C5 is still dominating a lot of scca and expedition events..low mass, tons of potential. Thanks for watching and sub'ing...lots more to come! I'll be doing a range of videos, on various car related topics, but Corvette based things will always be recurring. I have more details on the carbon and some others things ahead!

      @clintonscanlon1325 Před 3 lety +1

      @@hiighcalibre I have a set of REAR C5 Z06 wheels all around that (i have been told) will fit most big brake kits. And I have a set of 18x10.5 tsw nurburgrings that would also fit a brake kit. I'm not sure what the offsets are on these, but I don't run any spacers or anything. Front wheels poke out about an inch, rears don't. For HPDE that shouldn't matter. I don't mind the look, but I wouldn't mind a new set of fenders either...

    I didnt realize I never commented. This is a great video with your explanation and reasoning. I actually just picked up some CCWs in 17x10F and 17x11R with 315s/45/17 square. The only thing I dont like is the poke up front. I am on stock suspension still but have coilovers that are going on soon.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety +3

      wgnths Thanks for the comment. Much the reason I made the video is because there are a lot of versions of “square” going on, that I was seeing. 315’s is a big no, and the point of square, for me was the ability to rotate tires freely, which 17x10’sF and 17x11’sR dont allow. 17’s on the rear as well, would be interesting.
      When I worked on putting this setup together I did it to create the best set of compromises possible. The most tire, the ability to rotate, no spacers involved, and no visual poke. Much of my goal was aesthetics...I wanted the car to look proper. I wanted a lot of concavity to my wheels as well, not just in the rear, but in the front also...pure symmetry.
      If you look at a new ZL1 1LE...it has “poke” in some peoples opinion. Thats how my car pokes...really not at all. I think square is the way to go, but I have seen some peoples square setup with 1.5” of tire sticking out, and that was a big no way for me..
      New vid gettin shot today. I will be addressing Savage Geeses review vid. I am also doing another on the full history of modification with my car. All coming ahead.

    • @wgnths
      @wgnths Před 4 lety

      @@KnightDriveTV thanks for your feedback. I have taken it into consideration and I am selling my tires. The 17 front and rear wheels I will make due but with staggered tires. Might do a 275/35/17 front and a 315/40/17 rear. Not sure just yet.

      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety +1

      @@Team512 I have ideas for products in all of those areas, but the first will be exterior. The intention to create small, affordable and enhancing products versus large commitment/cost/mold products. The first thing I'm working on has been passed across a few sets of eyes, and I have no doubt it will be well received. The end issue is to be sure of production cost and keep a viable margin but I have a lot of carbon/resin and material to start, that's paid for...so I can take some chances up front. It's a good out of the box offering, for sure. Pretty sure you'll like it!

    • @Team512
      @Team512 Před 5 lety

      KnightDriveTV As a business person myself, I certainly appreciate preserving margin, especially on lower cost items. Sounds like you have a solid plan and a good starting inventory of raw material. Whatever it is, I’m sure it will look mighty fine on my black FRC! What’s your current timeline?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety

      @@Team512 Yeah, I've been down these roads before...I have some prototype titanium mufflers in house and some various things I was working on for C6. I inevitably decided that this carbon was the way I wanted to go initially, though I have plans for some other product. In the mid to late 2000's I did a lot of online advertising and sold custom headers/downpipes/intercooler with custom endtanks, etc...I have dabbled in carbon, but always wanted to take it farther. Right now I am refining fit issues on these particular parts, and varying design slightly. The parts have some complexity in shape, so I'm working on reducing any draft angles and things. I'd estimate I'd like to have first parts out of the molds in about a month.

    Great video. I LOVE seeing C5 content. My dad left me his (98 C5 convertible with built motor, C6Z06 suspension) and have now had it 10 years. Plan on keeping it forever. I think I am going with your exact set up wheel/tire wise. Two questions,
    1. Do you notice much tramlining (wandering) on the road?
    2. Do you have the deep or super deep forgeline wheels?
    Thanks again, Car looks great,
    WB

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety +3

      Deep series. I have as much caster dialed as I can while hitting my camber targets. Most wandering is from improper rear alignment or too little caster. Naturally a wide grippy front tire is going to seek some grooves in pavement and have some jumping on slow tight turns due to ackerman effect but its just par for the course. The front end of the car feels much more confident, turns in harder and the balance is much more dialed in. The ability to rotate tires and have more front end feel are both huge plus's for the C5.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 2 lety +2

      This wheel/tire combo will fit any c5. The airbag situation is overrated in my opinion. We went 80+yrs driving cars without airbags and in a C5 without one youre still surrounded by a safer car thats crash tested, etc. If you wear your seatbelt, youre far safer, even without the airbag than anyone on a motorcycle, anyone in an early 90s car or prior, plus unless the Corvette is your only car you daily everywhere, the chances of you getting in a wreck with it are less. Fact is, I spent many years as a paramedic and many aged system airbags dont deploy as expected either...so there is no guarantee there.

    18x9.5 +50
    19x11 +55

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety

      The point of the video is to allow true square. Your setup cant be rotated, and with track camber the poke isnt even noticeable, as its matched with a proper width tire that rolls the shoulder to the contact patch, making it flush. From there its about monitoring tire pressure and rotating the setup for tire life. With 1/2" of rim poke at best, I can freely rotate my setup corner to corner and maximize tire life, far more than your advised setup.

    • @twinflag821
      @twinflag821 Před 5 lety +1

      KnightDriveTV some people such as myself don’t track and don’t want poke. When my rears or fronts wear out I replace them. Simple as that. Form over function. Plus I get to run a 305 in the rear! just the streetcred and hp I gain from having a tire size start with a “3” is worth it alone.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety +1

      @@twinflag821 I understand, I suppose then you'd understand why I directed this video at people, more oriented for road racing and handling, versus drag racing. The staggered setup leads to front end push, so while you're straight line traction may be good, your turn-in and mid corner transition are going to lose compared to square, by design.
      This setup is a choice to make the C5's much more capable, turning, and is pretty proven, for drivers who have the capability to handle a car more on the edge of neutral corner balance vs the stock balance with safety built in. I could provide pictures of my setup, and there is no perceived poke with 2.3 degrees of camber, which is a street/track position. I hope that clarifies some things, because while I've seen some square setups poke horribly, my "poke" is unnoticeable because it essentially doesn't exist.

    • @twinflag821
      @twinflag821 Před 5 lety +1

      KnightDriveTV at all costs I prefer the natural rake of a staggered setup. I run -2 up front -1 rear and it is dead flush. Again form over function.

    This is the exact info I've been looking for! The setup looks great. I too want the ability to rotate my tires and have the best feel possible. I have an 03 z06. • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah, 18x11, +53 will fit exactly as shown. Stock camber is slightly less than I run, but frankly I've got quite the miles on these and I'm not seeing a bunch of shoulder wear. It's imperative to monitor pressures, and I tend to run these tires low to work against the camber...say 27 cold on average, which then comes up to 30 on the drive. Car is loose until then though...this has allowed essential track camber with no real increased wear. I will be rotating soon but, I've had the setup on for.....some time now...I'd say like going on 3yrs on the first set of MPSS's. Granted I put only about 8k or so miles in that time but I've seen guys with track camber see the end of the tire in 5k on the street. Whatever you get, just be sure about caliper clearance, but...if you're on stock brakes anything will likely be a-ok. I've got C6Z calipers so I fit this setup tight...these are the Deep series F14's...they curve right around the caliper...I have like 1/4" clearance.
      I'm doing some mods ahead on this car also...3d printing a widebody, then pulling molds, custom headlight kits, bezels and some carbon inserts that go some places. Lots coming...covid put me off track for a little. Thanks for watching! Glad the video helped!

With stock spring rates, a little height may be required to be at full dive, plus turn into a corner and not maybe rub slightly. Overall though, this setup has full range of motion, both in steering and suspension range, with no rub. • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 3 lety

      I do like the factory rears at 18x10.5. Couple problems exist, at this point. 1. The oem rears are basically MORE expensive than custom forgestars and they fit worse. Back in the day, had I known rears would work I'd have done it because they were easy to access. They do rub though. The best fitting combo is what I have...there is very little compromise abd very slight poke in front but no rubs, no issues, etc. No square setup is going to fit 100% perfect because if you pull the front in, itll rub and thatll make the back sit in. The only true fitment of square, at a wide width, is 18x11 et53. Brakes really arent the issue here. I just made sure my forgestars cleared my brakes...and the oem z06 rears will also. The custom forgestars, at this point, are cheaper, fit better and are just the beat choice.

    I have an 2002 Electron Blue Z06 with stock wheel package. I absolutely love your square set up Forgestar F14 wheels and tires. I have a couple of questions. In the video you mention the DEEP set up...they are not the SUPER DEEP correct? also do the wheels stick out beyond the stock fender and do you get any rubbing?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety

      Deep series, they do not rub. Sometimes they touch this little plastic edge near the bumper, itll squeak. It barely touches. This offset, tire width configuration is optimal. Minimal poke up front and the tire shoulder rolls toward the fender as the tire isnt any wider. 315’s will look horrible vs this. If youre dead straight with the wheel and looking dead straight at the car it pokes out in front, but once you even barely turn the wheel or look at the car off angle, it looks flush. I wouldnt rock ugly shit. I built cars for sema, there is a tiny compromise here, but for the grip, the ability to rotate tires, the dish up front. Its far far better than sunken fronts, push and inability to rotate. I run 2 degrees neg camber up front on the street. If you dialed in track camber it wouldnt poke at all whatsoever

    Thanks for this video!
    Question: did you have to make any ride height adjustments after the change? It seems like the car in stock form has a pretty even ride height from front to rear even though the rear tires are about 1" taller than the fronts. With adding a tire diameter that is essentially 1" higher, wouldn't that add an additional inch to the front of the car vs rear and throw the weight balance/loading off a bit?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 2 lety +1

      The c5 has a factory rake requirement front to rear, so that the aero balance of the car is correct. The square setup is fine if you keep that rake in mind when doing your ride height setup and corner balancing. When that's the case, the weight balance front to rear is fine.
      In the end though cross weight is more important than the front to rear weight bias by 1% etc. Cant think of static weights so critically, as when the car is under acceleration and/or braking, that weight bias is flying all over the place. Cross weights are more critical, while keeping the nose low under squat (rake requirement) keeps the front planted as good as possible.

      I have had no issues at all. Wheel speed variations occur when doing any turning as is. Each tire follows a different arc, therefore turns at very different speeds. I believe any issues people have had is likely linked to other issues in the ah system, like a slight misalignment or other issue. I have zero problems with active handling.

    Great informative video! I'm picking up a higher mileage C5 Z06 in the upcoming months that has stock shocks on it. I'm planning a square setup and the Johnny O'Connell bars as well. What would be a good shock to best compliment these bars?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Well, AFE does have an oconnell shock as well. Personally, I am on the Pfadt Featherlights and overall I think its a good package, though if I could change anything I think the setup has a tad too much spring rate. I think the Z06 spring rates with a good damper, square setup for front end grip, and then tune the balance with the rear bar, has to be a solid combo. C6 Z06 shocks are a great budget option that have a pretty appealing dampening curve and are a great budget option.

      @@KnightDriveTV that's good info. I was hoping the c6z shocks were as good as folks claim, they sound to be a performance bargain.
      The car I'm going to be working on is stock height c5z, how much lowering can you get away with and retain proper geometry? I prefer slammed but I want functionality over looks.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 5 lety +1

      It appears abput 15mm of lowering retains geometry, but beyond that you have to compensate with some other measures. Bump steer correction kits for these cars from baer or moog, both act to restore geometry, but also reduce compliane and enhance feel. I have higher spring rates on mine, so my car tolerates a bit lower than stock, but I am not what one would call "slammed". I consider my car to simply be stanced like a factory Porsche performance model would be, etc.

    Size:18x10
    Offset:79mm
    Backspacing:8.66"
    Bolt Pattern:5-475
    Will these fit front and rear 1999 FRC???

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety +1

      That's pretty much the spec of a base C6 rear wheel, but in an 18". They'd "fit" but you'd need spacers. 79mm offset is the killer.
      Factory C5 Z06 rears (also fit the front with SLIGHT rub) are below. See the difference to your spec.
      Wheel size: 18 x 10.5
      Offset: +58mm
      Tire Size: 295/35/18
      Back Spacing: 8.03” (204.05mm)
      This is why I labored and was so specific about my fitment. I pushed the offsets out just a tad (53mm ...lower number, further out they push), then did 18x11. That tad bit of offset added is why my fronts clear. They also JUST fit the rear, but poke the front slightly. If you are only a little bit off, when trying to run square...the car will look like hell.
      In my opinion...I have the best fit square setup you're going to put on there that looks and functions best. 2nd best is the C5Z rears on all four corners in the spec I showed above. If you deviate from that spec, you're going to either need spacers to fix a lack of offset, or you're going to fit poking way out and looking...not good.

    Did you consider the C5Z to C6 steering wheel conversion? You could keep that airbag and also...it's a Cobalt steering wheel part that you can modify/wrap to fit better.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 4 lety +2

      I gave it a tremendous amount of consideration, believe me. The issue I had was 1. I wanted a much smaller diameter (though I even saw a company on the forum reducing the ring size further on C6 wheels), but MORE importantly 2. I wanted the wheel "dished" or projecting closer to my seating position. I went as far as to consider TIG welding/modifying the C6 steering wheel frame, and it's something I still may do in the future. In the immediate sense though, this Nardi has been with me over 10yrs, and actually was in one of the most built Honda's (dating back to my import shop days) I'd ever had. I then online raced with it for a number of years. It's got some value to me, that it found itself in my Z06.

      @@KnightDriveTV That's a great story to the wheel. I did end up getting a Cobalt wheel for $30 with an airbag. I sent it out to be redone and resized with a flat bottom as well. Conversion wasn't horrible but the wheel with now a Corvette logo covering the airbag is nice to know I have and makes the car look +8 years newer with the seats and shifter I have. I hope you can create some kind of non-junk center console with no cupholder or an actually usable one. Really it and the dash handlebar are the only things I don't like and can't change.

    Any thoughts on what equal tire diameters front and rear do to the abs related systems on the car?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před měsícem +1

      The system has to tolerate variations in wheel speeds when turning and doing other meneuvering. The system tolerates it but the threshold of intervention seems less immediate, which I am fine with. On the track, the system is very restrictive, even in competitive mode, so some slack is good. I have tracked the car many times this way, and there are no issues.

  • @TheSwampDonkey

    New to the channel and I am in the market for a C5Z. I've owned a C4 but I am not all that familiar with the C5's. The C5A I am looking now is running Forgestar S18's 19x10.5 squared. He has 275/30/19's up front and 305/30/19's in the rear. It was also lowered on stock bolts. One of the first things I noticed was the negative camber on the fronts. Not horrible but visually noticeable. My first thought is, it will need to be raised a little and alignment to remove the negative camber. So my question is, are there any issues rubbing on 10.5? You mentioned you ran 11's but they were 18's and you had specific offset. Is there anything I need to be looking for suspension wise? I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před rokem +1

      There is a lot.to your question but I will try to break down quick. I will say, the wheel setup for that car is a bit odd. Running a square setup on wheel, but non square on tire, makes no sense. The point of the square setup is to allow free rotation for wear, but also to put equal rubber on front and back, to balance out handling and gain front end confidence. The issue people run into, is they get a 10.5 wide front at an offset that makes them stick out, then they camber inward to return some appearance. In my case, I did the square setup, with 18x11 and et53 offset specifically (width and offset work hand in hand to create a specific fit and location in the wheel well) and I run aggressive camber because thats what the track requires and the tire requires to get heat evenly across the tread pattern, on track. In your case, if just casual driving is concerned, then raising and reducing camber will make you want to change those front wheels. 10.5's are unnecessary for a 275 tire and 10.5's require enough offset which will make them sit outward. Youd want a 10" or even a 9.5" wide wheel, like the factory z06 front wheel, at 9.5 width and 54 offset. Once you had more factory camber settings, the fitment would good. In the end though, I'd suspect those wheels you have are 19x10.5 at a 54 offset, which is the spec of the c5 z06 rear wheels, on in a one inch larger diameter rear and 2 inch diameter larger front wheel. Its an odd choice imo. I'd budget changing the wheel/tire setup for where you want to go and what you want to do

      @@KnightDriveTV Yeah sounds exactly what they did on the fronts. I noticed a little poke on the sides when looking down it which is where the camber is also present. They should have gotten a wheel that had less of an offset on the front from the sounds of it. Thank you., this provides a tremendous amount of help just trying to understand what someone did and what I am looking at.

    One other question. Since all the video was with the wheels turned, how much do the front wheels protrude past the fender when straight, and is there any rubbing issues on the inner fender? Could you send me a photo. And I second your tire choice. I run the Michelin PS2!

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  Před 3 lety +1

      Itz the best compromise youll get from the square setup. The poke in front is minimal if dead straight, facing your eye down the fender. If you fixate on the poke youll see it. The key to managing the fit is in the details...its the tire size specifically, its the camber and ride height, etc. I have pics of thw car on my instagram and youll see from any angle, other than staring right straight down over the fender, it looks dead flush. I told one guy, if all you do is take pics of your girlfriend with the camera facing up her nose from the bottom, she aint gonna look too good. I dont know who looks straight down the fender like some of these people take pictures. Believe me, I'm picky as hell...if it looked bad, I wouldnt keep it. Fact is, the front end grip, zero rubs, ability to rotate any rim/tire to any corner for wear...its worth it.

      @@KnightDriveTV I hear you. I like the benefits you mention from the square setup. Which is why I’m asking so many questions. Wish I could just sit down and talk. While looks are important, it is more important to me to keep debris off the side of the car to the extent that’s reasonable hence keeping the tires under the fender. My Jeep has massive tires that hang out past the fenders but that has a functional purpose when off-roading, and I compromise having dirt slung all over my Jeep. You mention the “drift scene” the back of my mind I wonder if you prefer more front end grip than I might as I’m not really a “drift” style driver. But rather neutral canyon carving! LOL My Z does understeer and I would like a little more front grip but the back end can be coxed out if throttle is applied at the right time. I think most sports cars that the “average joe” would own are engineered that way to keep non-drivers from losing the back end too quick.
