2009 Chevy HHR Window Switch Repair (Mini Projects Ep.4)

- This Chevy HHR has an issue with the driver's window, it will go down but doesn't always go back up! We'll take a closer look and diagnose the issue causing the switch to act this way. Luckily, it's a simple fix and we'll fix it up pretty easily!

I did the exact same repair on my 09 HHR SS , 3 months ago. Those switches are expensive . But you don't have to take the door apart. The switch can be pried up from the door handle with a thin flat blade screw driver.
After removing 2 screws in the cavity.
I designed similar switches for Chrysler autos for about 5 years. The electronics becomes much more complicated with something called multiplexing, but in the end it's still just a mechanical switch. That membrane is called an elastomer dome pad, they are also used in some computer keyboards.
What's the purposes of all those circuits?
Thank you very much. Your instructions work like a charm. We did not disassemble the entire door. Just took out the two bolts in the door handle pocket to start. Then use the thin bladed screwdriver to lift the assembly out of the door pocket. Then pop the connectors off so that we could bring the assembly inside the house and clean everything with q-tips and alcohol followed by number two pencil eraser. Everything works again.
I have a 2010 HHR SS that I got from my grandpa. All it needed was an engine clean out and light body work and it looked brand new. I couldn't be happier with my 260 hp tin can

I've repair a window of a car that got the same problem plus brushes on the motor that was extremely used....
This look like it's a common problem on a car and of course the driver's window usually is the first to fail and that looks normal because it's the one that is used when only one person is in the car so, the driver....
The car i've repair is a Hyundai Matrix (i think the name Matrix is only for EU it's not the same for USA...) and what i liked is that you can take everything into bits and repair/replace what is needed with make it really reliable and repairs for almost nothing.

Great tutorial. I've had this work on one switch, and not on another. Simple enough to try and clean up before buying a new switch assembly. Just worked on my Chevy Silverado, back left psgr switch was starting to fail. Same scenario as yours as well, the cleanest looking switch was the one not working.

That's interesting that they multiplexed the switch there cuz older GM cars the 8 wires always used to fail at the door jamb where they would flex and break and the switches were always fine.

It only took me a few years, but I finally got around to it. It worked. Now all my passenger windows roll up and down from the master switch.
The wiggle technique was always my go to, until i decided to look for this video.
No need to remove or even loosen the door panel at all. Just two screws and the whole switch assembly pops straight out.

That amount of complexity and non-durable parts on something as exposed to the elements as a car door, is just piss poor engineering... the board wasn't even potted ffs!

My dad's 2005 Malibu Maxx LS needs contact cleaning on the door lock and side mirror switches.

The snag is that I haven't found the time to do it! Plenty of work that has already been done that I need to edit into episodes, a Firebird video will likely be the next big upload.
The 07-13 gm trucks have switches just like these. Maybe even same part # Its not uncommon for a truck to come in with all 4 switches inop or atleast one function inop. Its mostly caused from them getting wet at one point or another. Of course being a GM dealer we cant clean them because it isnt a warranty able repair. We have to replace them etc. But i repaired a few on vehicles ive owned just like this as well as keep a spare cleaned switch in my box for test units.
Thats being said they are fairly cheap brand new.

What are your thoughts on harbor freight?
Maybe it's just the photo, but the two electrolytic surface mount capacitors shown @ 2:04 appear to have corrosion or electrolytic fluid leaking out of them near the base of each leg (also C2, D1??).
I think that is just the picture (and compression artifacts) making the solder appear a bit strange, it appears there is some flux left on the surface discoloring it or something. Didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in person, and it appears to be working fine (for now)!
Very common problem mate. And terrible design, such a complex circuit board in a place prone to be wet with rain drops.
Perhaps some Dielectric Grease on each contact would prevent further oxidation? Just a thought...….
Dielectric grease is not good for contacts that arc. The silicone can break down and cause damage to the contacts.
But how do you get the switch OUT of the door?!?!

Nah, they will try to sell you a new PCM and a new engine.
Nope we dont. Its not a repair we could warranty nation wide. However the switches are cheap and we replace them often. Its caused from them getting wet.
WAAAAAAY more complicated than it needs to be. Over engineered to the 10th degree. When will they learn that simplicity keeps money in their pocket.

These kids with $100k debts for engineering feel the need to over complicate everything. Power windows worked fine for 50 years without all the extra circuitry.
I'm a little confused. You're obviously a bright guy. It's always surprised me that you consistently mispronounce "especially" as "ecKspecially." But in this video, you seem to acknowledge and mock that fact by putting "eXpecially" is the caption. So you know you're mispronouncing "especially" and simply choose to continue to do so?
He did that on purpose.
I don't know where I picked it up, but I am aware I usually pronounce some words like "especially" strangely ("washer" is a hard one too). I have always had trouble with "s" sounds. I often don't catch myself saying it and I might try to go back and correct it if I catch it early in the voiceover/editing process, but if I only notice it later I don't think it is worth all the effort to re-record and change it.
Sell, buy different and better car. Problem solved.
a combination of poor quality - planned obsolescence - and what i propose is an excuse to keep people employed for the sake of a job is why stuff like this is overly complicated.
