A few more tips. Stock up on medicine/First Aid supplies & pet food. I just picked up another 4 pounds of white rice at the DG. I work with dogs for a living. My dogs eat green beans or another veggie on their supper meal every day(to keep weight down in place of food). I grew 30 green bean plants last year just for them. You can stretch their food with rice, a lot of different veggies, canned meat & some fruits. Mine love apples & bananas. We had a volunteer cherry tomato plant last year. Yielded a ton, but we don’t like them. The dogs love them. I keep 2 extra bags of dog food at all times & rotate through them.

Hard to keep their weight down) I don’t feed mine raisins, but they’ve had green beans on supper for many years. I give them yams once in while, baby carrots as snacks all the time. Apples are excellent fiber. I dehydrate veggies for them too as snacks(& bug out food) They don’t eat any other beans, too hard on their bellies. Paisley will be 11 & Patriot 7 this year. @@shelleypowers1153 You too! Channels like this are wonderful for crowdsourcing info & ideas! There used to be a time, no so many years ago, where neighbors helped neighbors. Church/communities came together to help families in need or work together in times of crisis. Society turned to making citizens less reliable on themselves &/ or communities to be self-sufficient on the government. The more dependent citizens are on govt for survival, the less control we have of our lives. Best thing to do is prepare for the worst then hope you never need it!

Thanks, Leisa! Been in many ( too many) situations where a stocked pantry would have taken a load off. Like a 24 inch snow storm, or a 3 inch ice-storm or fog so thick that you could not see to the end of the driveway, and you forget to get milk for breakfast. Simple to the complex, its just a wise thing to do! Don't put it off until later- life has a way of catching up..BEFORE- later.

I also make sure I have a well-stocked medicine chest. The last thing you want, is to have an injury that can't be addressed or symptoms that can't be relieved. A few must-haves for me are: pain relievers like Tylenol and aspirin, and topical pain relievers like lidocaine, benzocaine for oral pain, digestive upset meds like Imodium and antacids, bandages large and small, antibiotic creams, toothpaste, hemorrhoid relief, allergy medications, cough medicine, and irritation-relieving eye drops.

Essential oils are important. Many are broad spectrum antibiotics. Oil of oregano and clove are two that come to mind. I stock organic oregano standardized to 70 pct carvarol and gelatin caps. If the SHTF, plants will be your medicine. Consider learning about the plants growing in your area and how to use them. Last year I harvested wild garlic, choke cherries and crab apples right in my neighborhood. Forager Chef is a great resource.

Someone said stock on pet food in honesty we have 3 dogs, 1 rabbit and now 7 chickens. I make my dogs food because that dry crap in the store caused allergies, sores and hair loss. My vet says our pups are now healthier than ever before and the only change was that I started making their food. So I am stocking up and canning supplies for that. My garden this year will have only what we will use for us and our critters, no more. It's nice to help others but the key word in self sufficient is self not others. I'm not saying I won't share but I'm not catering to others any longer.

This was a great topic. Thanks. I have started making most of my own cleaning supplies. Baking soda and white vinegar do a lot of cleaning job. I have a cider vinegar, lemon, and rosemary cleaner for some cleaning jobs. I keep Fels Naptha soap, washing soda and Borax on hand to make laundry detergent. Mrs. Bronners unscented soap can make anything from shampoo, dish soap, foaming hand soap, laundry detergent, and more. I stock up on the refill cartons so I’m not bringing plastic in the house. I have heard that many brands of bottled water now have microplastics in them. I have heard in my canning community that they are canning water in case of an emergency.

Some soups finally, and I already had plenty of canned tomatoes and sauce and juice from the garden last year and will do again this year. Most of my garden veggies are frozen but I am switching to canning some of them - some I like better frozen though. Have slowly been canning chicken and pork. Great advice, Leisa.
Why would you want to barter for food if you have well stocked pantry with food that you eat? it’s silly to stock up on food that you don’t eat just barter.
Use what you got, and only buy what you and your family will eat. You don’t need to save food for bartering.
If you do try to barter with someone, then they will probably think you are hoarding. That’s exactly what you’re doing.
By what you will eat and eat what you buy so that food does not go bad. Rotating.
Love my coffee. I can’t live without it.
    You can make this stuff.
    Like crackers. pasta and bread.
I’ve learned to make bread and pie crust in my 20’s
I learned to cook a lot of things from scratch . I still buy some cream soup and jar pasta . Tho I can make it if need be. But convenience is good too.

I eat on Christmas paper plates ALL year long. After Christmas I buy stacks of 10" dinner plates at low prices (more than 50% off) and far cheaper than the everyday 8" plates on the shelf. I live alone but even when company is over they don't notice or don't care. Grocery stores also clearance trash bags or ziplocks that have been opened and taped closed. I compare the name brand to make sure it is a 50% off or better deal and stock them away. I recently purchased stacks of paper bowls because the company (Dixie) was changing from 36 count to 35 count. My family calls me the clearance queen --- I have a bedroom that is a pantry and with a canner (processing now...) I am stocking my shelves. My greenhouse is full of edibles getting ready to plant. I can't wait to can green beans, squash, pickles -and make salsa, soups, stews with the harvest. The importance of being prepared can't be understated in today's economy.

Love Mylar bags too, have a lot of flour and corn meal stored! I bake a lot! I didn't realize that sunflower seeds go rancid until your video a while back ,thank you!( I had some vacuum sealed)
Also, the really large contractor black bags are best for using when someone pisses you off......or so I've heard!😂😊

Great advice for newbies and those with a bit more experience. I currently don't have the pantry of my dreams yet - fully stocked and no Instagram shots but we are working on it. I reckon I have a couple of weeks worth in some items and more like 6 months in others. Aim is to have up to 2 years in essentials and 6 months in nice to haves.

We moved house and have now been told the extension on the back needs to come down - its the family room and galley kitchen. It was built about 50 years ago and not very well. As part of the rebuild we will have a utility area including cleaning stock cupboard and large walk in pantry. There will be one large cupboard and a breakfast bar with cupboards and drawers on the kitchen side. It's a couple of years off but can't wait to stock that pantry lol

Another idea, stock up on paper supplies. Plates, napkins, paper towels & ESP toilet paper. I had been picking up multipacks of tp on sale once or twice a month so I had a closet full in 2020. We went the whole year without needing it. I have 100s of plastic cups & silverware packed away for my bug out. BATTERIES! For flashlights, battery operated candles we having hanging or sitting in rooms. It’s light if the power goes out. Emergency weather radio, they’re cheap.

Cream of tartar to make baking powder if needed. Also, Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce are a must in our house for marinating. For breakfast we use a lot of oatmeal as well as honey to make granola.

While it's easy to make noodle and rice mixes from scratch, it can be beneficial to stock them for when the power goes out and all you can do is heat some water. Also, See Mindy Mom often has recipes for "power-out" meals or "$10 to payday" meals that start with something in a can or box that's already seasoned and builds on it--for example, Rice a Roni can be the base for a chicken and rice soup from the pantry.

I buy organic popcorn sealed in Mylar in a large bucket. Learn to pop your corn the old fashioned way in a pot on the stove. Use coconut oil, it truly is delicious! Sprinkle it with sea salt or Bragg’s nutritional yeast seasoning ( loaded with B vitamins) SO, SO good and much better for you than that crap in the microwave bag!

I like to store water in larger plastic containers - 2-3 gallon pails from grocery store bakeries that pie filling/frosting/etc. come in (often free), gallon plastic jugs that natural liquid supplements come in (I save when empty) - I believe (but have no proof) these containers will leave fewer microplastics in the water. They also last MUCH longer than gallon milk/water jugs.

Currently, our pantry is an inflation fighting pantry for which we buy good to great priced items in quantity. This has led us to having more than enough to hold us through a snow storm., power outage, and even lean times. Other items weve purchased in quantity at acceptable, regular or general sale prices. Yesterday we bought tp, "enough to last a year". Our pantry activity for the week-end will be stacking it on the top shelf in the very corner of the pantry shelves with as small a footprint as possible; the plan is to use that vertical space by gosh.

I’ve been building a pantry for years, plus I’ve always bought in bulk bc we lived far from a store where we DID get snowed in w/ no power for days. I have everything you had on your list. I’m Blessed to have an Amish bulk food store so I have 1/2 gallon jars full of peppercorns & other spices. I Buying whole herbs & spices in bulk if you can last a very long time. I grind mine in a coffee grinder. I’m building on my bug out foods now. I have water stored up to use as GRAY water, so it doesn’t matter how long it’s stored. We also have a water filter for just filtering water in an emergency.

I like to can chicken in the 8 oz wide mouth 1/2 pint jars. They are perfect for single serving for my husband to take to work or for me to dump into a salad. Same process as a pint jar. And it’s easier to get out than a jelly jar. I got a bunch of them before the prices went up on jars.
