My 93 taurus, that I use for rural mail, has that size of wheel. It does pretty solid on the 130 miles of gravel per work day. This video is really fun..

Sarah, never underestimate the power of a Prius... You're right though, you can have fun in any car. I learned that when I had my 1988 Plymouth Sundance. It wasn't anything special, performance wise, but it did spend quite a bit of time on two wheels!

Tire sidewalls are an IMPORTANT part of a car's suspension. When you put 29s on it and stretch a tire over the rim you are taking a large swath of suspension technology out of the mix.
Deploracle so many journalists are all about track driving they have almost ruined cars for rural areas and the snow belt. The sidewalls are a huge component in grip for driving on ice. They are also like you said an important part of suspension. On unimproved or rough roads short sidewalls transfer all the sudden jolts more directly to the bearings too and those parts with the abs sensors are expensive! I wish automakers would offer optional tire packages for the premium vehicles to better cope with weather like snow and ice along with rural roads. If I am chunking down big money I am going in on heated and cooled seats but would rather have the tire size of the base vehicle at a minimum or a specific heartland wheel package or something better suited for our climate and conditions.
Also a low sidewall tyre will hold grip for a long time, but when the lateral load gets too much, that tyre will slide and it won't have the flex of a higher sidewall tyre to work with to come back.
lager wheels with low sidewall tires also increase unsprung mass. (and mass in general.)

I used to drive a fwd Prius for work. It could chirp the tires on pavement, but where it really shined was late braking into turns. People were always trying to get in front of me and cut me off because it was a Prius, and the look of bewilderment on people's faces as I'd out brake them and get really good front grip into a turn was awesome. I even started shouting "Yeah, you just got Prius'ed!" LOL
