This is the famous Cluster Bomb, also known as the Dual-purpose improved conventional munition ,usually Fired from this Em Tripple 7 Howitzer, or this Paladin Self propelled Artillery.
When fired, the Fuse kicks the expulsion plate while the outer casing detonates, releasing the m42 Grenades.
The Cluster Munition unfolds its ribbon, indirectly semi-arming the Shape charge.
It is at this stage, that it becomes a lethal projectile, and inertia weight takes action to detonate the grenade.
We will also be looking at the Advantages and disadvantages regarding the devastating consequence of this weapon.

Base bleed fills the vacuum behind the projo increasing range approx 5KM. The projectile does not slit on its long axis, instead the base is pushed off the body. There is actually shims around each bomblet. There is a mix of M42 and M46 bomblets in the round. The 42 have an embossed body adding in frag and the 46 a solid body and are loaded at the base of projectile to prevent the bomblets from crushing during firing and ejection set back.
I am more of a visual learner, and your videos allows me to truly understand it.
I totally recommend them, those are a MUST HAVE for home defence.
We have it in Ukraine. They are really good for self defence against occupants. But only far from civilians.

And I say this unironically
Your local gun store will tell you these fire the whole bullet, that's 65% more bullet per bullet.
Now I'm crystal clear.. thank you, great animation and content!
Thanks to you for dropping in a comment
when I look up these things on youtube, this exactly the format I'm looking for; great animations, precise , straight to the point. If you're reading this know that I'm binge watching all your videos.
Man, great explanation of this. Really enjoyed the breakdown.
Hello! Would you do a video about the Leclerc? I am curious to see how the autoloader works.
YES PLEASE! tank autoloader
+
Or japanese tank type 10 and comparison with Leclerc
Was involved with the manufacture of the M42/M46 cluster bombs, enough said, pretty accurate presentation
Absolutely fantastic explanation of both the engineering and operation of cluster bomb artillery, as well as their ethical concerns and why they are a controversial weapon. Clear concise and highly informative, great work as always I'm now subbed!
Thanks We love you guys 🙏
Europe considers shelling cities with civilian populations with cluster shells completely normal. So really you don't have any ethical problems with this.
@@MultiNike79 wrong. Switzerland for example destroyed the last ones im 2018.
@@xDlol24 But this does not prevent Switzerland from participating in the invasion of Russia and genocide in other ways. Switzerland is completely calm about the terrorist attacks committed by these weapons, about Nazism and violations of its own treaties.

When I was in the army, in addition to M109 166mm (6.1 inch) self-propelled howitzers, they still had M110 8 inch (203mm) self-propelled howitzers. Those had 180 M42 submunitions per shell! They quit using the 8" guns because the effectiveness of the 155mm has been increased so much, mainly due to increased accuracy of fire, and they said they don't need anything bigger than that. But, size matters. It would take 2 rounds of 155mm to lay down 176 submunitions, and a single 8" shell still beats that by ~2.3%. Like people say about engines, there's no replacement for displacement.
Amazing! love the attention to detail and the well researched material. Thanks for posting these videos.
Thanks to you for commenting
At 7:31, I think you meant to say 'unexploded submunitions', not unexplored
Very good animations with good explanations. Internet needs these. Thanx.
You're welcome!
Nice Video, I served on a M109 Crew for three years during the Gulf War. Brought back memories.
Thankyou for your service.
🙏
Same here. What unit?
This channel has some of the best graphics that anyone can understand the topic being discussed!
Thansk we try to make our videos as Simple as possible just like what Steve job di with the i phone design
Outstanding! Thank you.
I never knew a projectile contained so many grenades stacked up together pretty deadly💀
Pretty cool channel I've subscribed. You covered everything. Nice video.
As usual jawdropping !
Keep up the superdooperbloody excellent work and may God bless you always !
I am a fan of this channel !
God bless you Too 🙏
Video very well done by the way. Good work!
The animations are amazing.
I love your videos. Every day I look through this channel if a new video is uploaded or not ))))
One small note: In a shape charge the entire case isn't filled with explosives, you got the shaping cone correct however there's only air underneath the shaping cone! The initial explosion inverts the cone into a smooth jet-stream which then punches into the target with roughly a 1-2 inch standoff
Thanks for these engineering videos, the animation is top notch.
A Great Video explanation, of the Cluster Munition.
I am not subscribed but watch your videos, incredibly well done, simple explanation clear and precise. Always a pleasure.
Great job guys. Keep going !!!!
Best video on the internet as usual! BRAVO!
Thanks 🙏👍
I love your simple but amazing videos 😊😊
Glad you like them!
These aint simple videos LOL They may look like it but no way jose. That is some damn fine 3d computer animation right there.
Thank god for human ingenuity, without these skills such wonderful objects could not be created.
Great animation. Is muzzle break design not also required to manage the recoil? It was a critical component on the 90mm canons we used.
great video. should do one on archer and other fully automated self propelled howitzers like the german rch
Very educational, thanks AiTelly......!!!!!
Always Welcome
You don't mention the safety mechanism on the fuse. We learned in a normal situation or in close combat or road ambush situations you need 70 meters between you and your target for the fuse to activate. There are some kind of system or splint in the fuse that fly off due to the rotation or something simular. This prevent the granade to explode inside the barrel. We were training for a road block situation with the M109, we decided to fire the main artillery gun like a tank in what we called direct direction, with backup of two cal 50 machine guns. Our officers claimed that we were to close. We argued that yes we saw we were to close, but the outcome for the charlies of having a 45 kg granade fire at your truck at 40 meters will create chaos and confusion! 😁 The officers took our point 😉
I always loved your videos
This is well done 👍
We got around 2 million of these parking at our warehouses haven’t use it for years , gosh . Need to bring it out soon
Amazing explanation... Thanks lot team
A very good video ,the production quality is perfect !
Your Great Too 👍 thanks guys
We also had the for the 119er. The 105mm also has the ever fun "beehive" rounds, hehehe
That was cool. Playing with this thing would be an excellent substitute for golf.
Video well done Thank You!

Thank you so much this vid is so useful for making friends 😊😊
This was a good 1
Must of been a team of engineers whoever invented the cluster bombs.
I love it thanks 👍👍
Geez, those grenades are smol
Please make a video on MOAB (Mother Of All Bomb)
This bomb is illegal according to the rules of engagement
No such thing as illegal in warfare
Mines is illegal also but ppl still make and deploy them
It(Cluster Bomb) looks like hundreds of grenades packaged in a canister, which when detonated simultaneously scatter many grenades over a wide area, to increasing their killing power.
👍
Really? And what makes you say that?....
Great work by the animators.
The ordinance itself, it’s a thing of engineering beauty!
And yes, I can see why such a devastating ordinance should be banned.
great video
The science used in making these weapons is insane.
High quality content
This is makes me remembered of the good old grapeshot
perfect!
Please include the metric system as well

The main problem with cluster munitions was the anti personnel mine version. No one uses those anymore. The land mine version was the one with a problem of "persistance" where mines that escaped clean up could be found much later. The media never did state things in proper detail so the current, immediate exploding grenade version, gets equated to the earlier "Inhumane" version. The modern version might actually be better than a solid big charges shell since the individual grenades only make a small hole, and the shrapnel is stopped by most buildings. A big conventional shell will destroy a building. One of the grenade bomblets probably only damages the roof and the room immediately under it, if it goes off course. The weapon is still only used against mass formations of vehicles or troops outside of urban areas anyways because of this. Troops will be in a building basement, so you want to crush them with the big charge. Nice graphics and explanation, fuzzy thinking.
The USA still happily uses them and many other as well...
@@newone-gd9sk define "them" the Bomblet, or Mine version? The USA and most other civilized nations steer away from the "FASCAM" versions.
Most countries also avoid the incendiary bomblets, and Russia has been using it since the first week.....
we still use the land-mine version they're being fired behind russian attacks so they hit them when they retreat but these new ones can be deactivated easily by trained personnel that are trained to go back after and clean them up
Thanks for the video, vary interesting..
Glad you enjoyed it!
dude i like your chanel respectt!!!!
Thanks 🙏👍 We love you guys
The howitzer developed during the 1970s was the M198. In this video you're depicting the M777, which actually replaced the M198 in the late 2000s. The design process of the M777 didn't even begin until the late 1980s.
Deployed 1987

07:31: Correction. They are not "unexplored" submunitions. They are "unexploded" submunitions.
Kindly cover Asian weapons as well... Indian, Chinese, South Korean and Japanese
