Fitting front wings to my Austin mini

  • Its been a long time coming and Angus is now beginning to look like a car again. In this video I fit front wings to the car and the wings of choice were Magnum. The only reason I chose Magnum is because I was recommended to, apparently the heritage ones tend not to fit as well for some reason, maybe the pressings are worn?
    Were the Magnum wings an easy fit? No the weren't! These wings took a lot of fettling to get them to sit right especially the passenger side one. The most annoying part of it was the amount of fettling and dressing I had to do to these wings. The wings also had lots of sharp bits still on them from the pressing stage, something which would take minutes for the manufacturer to clean off
    Would I fit these panels again? Yes I probably would as I now know what needs to be done and the benefit is they hare half the price of the heritage ones!

    Another great transformation to the mini. Yes I could see a big difference with the welder fixed, it both looked and sounded better with the timer repaired. Great work guys.

      Thanks Danny, we've also learned that thd spot welder doesn't like weld thru primer on thr outer flanges so will just keep it to the inner flanges and see how we get on with that

    • @BMCWorkshop
      @BMCWorkshop  Před 3 lety

      Cheets John, plug welding is absolutely fine however spot welding is neater with less to linish back and it looks more oem. For a starter welder I'd recommend the Clarke 135TE, that's a fantastic machine to use. I loved my one when I had it and it's perfect for the mini

    14:53 forget weld on primer, lead load them. I will be lead loading the join under the headlamp/front panel and the join between the wing/scuttle, keeps the rot out.

    @normanraeburn8047 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi Sean & Kev, another great video. Love the banter. It must be a good few years since you bought that crimper, i had a look at them recently and they are about £120. I need to fold the wings on my car, same as your “A” panels but i will need to find an alternative way to do it. I also looked at spot welders, they are out of my price range. Anyhow keep up the good work, it’s coming together now, Norman

    • @BMCWorkshop
      @BMCWorkshop  Před 3 lety

      Cheers Norman, wow £120 for the crimper! It just shows you how things rocket in price over time. You could try and use a bit of copper pipe bent over and flattened and a pair of vice grips and that should do thd job just as well. I used the copper pipe method fir thd top of the a panels.
      The spot welders are ridiculous prices, Kev managed to get this one second hand from ebay for a decent price. Halfway through this video I thought that I might have needed to buy another one as it stopped working but fortunately we managed to fix it.

    Nice job you two, you cannot beat getting the face back on a mini.
    What weld through primer did you use. I found the upol the best, some others were really poor with the spot welder and even the upol causes the welder to spark at times

    • @BMCWorkshop
      @BMCWorkshop  Před 3 lety +2

      Cheers DB, I was using upol but have abandoned using weldthru primer on panels I'm spot welding now as the welder didn't like it plus these cars will never see the same punishment this time around so I don't really see thr point in using it now. Paints are also far better these days plus the car will be painted inside and out unlike when BL only painted the areas you seen!
