  • Forgotten Flicks' review and showcase for The Game, David Fincher's underrated thriller from 1997.
"The Game" (1997) is a gripping psychological thriller directed by David Fincher. The story follows Nicholas Van Orton, a wealthy investment banker played by Michael Douglas, who receives an unusual birthday gift from his brother Conrad (Sean Penn) - a real-life game that integrates with his everyday life. As the lines between the game and reality blur, Nicholas finds himself caught in a spiraling sequence of mysterious events, leading him to question what is real and what is part of the game. This film masterfully combines suspense, intrigue, and psychological depth, making it a standout in the thriller genre.

Nah. "The Game" had a lackluster screenplay, going from plot twist to plot twist in a binary motion ("is it real? no, it was a game! but no, it was real! but no, it was the game! but the game is real! but it was staged! hahaha now we don't really know if it's the game or not!") and it was a bit limited.

To enjoy this movie there’s a level of suspension of disbelief needed. The more you dissect, the less effective the movie will be. Just got to go with it.
