The term soap box is an old term from when people would be gathering in public, and they would break out a big wooden soap box to stand on so that everyone in the crowd can see and hear them
Ohhhh okay thank you
@@StaxReacts They still do that in London's Hyde park speakers corner.
Speakers’ Corner: London’s public debate spot
czcams.com/video/mSMhWfj4VSs/video.html
Home made stool or boxcar scooter. Lol
Like when someone's going off on their opinion, people tell them to Get off their Soapbox
@Tommy Speakers Corner is the only part of England with freedom speech - you can say anything you want without being held liable. Nowadays is mainly Muslim fundamentalists, with some hard-core Christians and Jews thrown in.
“Strictly handheld is the style I go, never rock the mic with the pantyhose” In a recording studio, generally you have a windscreen in front of the mic to prevent things like hard syllables like “p” popping on the mic, or to prevent wind noise and such. The mic is usually on a stand, and the performer just stands in front of it and sings through the windscreen, which is essentially pantyhose material stretched across a hoop. He’s saying in contrast, he holds the mic in his hand and spits, no wind screen or anything…and at that point in the video you see MCA doing just that, holding the mic and spitting into it. And the line “I use a bullshit mic that’s made out of plastic” refers to the fact that they use all kinds of mics, including some that aren’t considered pro quality. They weren’t concerned with things sounding pristine, they were just going for the sounds they got no matter what they used to get it. A cheap mic would give him a distorted sound on his vocals.
Aghhhh thank you for the clarification
Well said!
Windscreens are for delicate - and fragile - condenser mics. Cheap dynamic mics like the Shure SM57 have always been popular with artists that scream and put a lot of energy into the mic. In the Beastie Boys Book, they mention that they particularly liked mics from Radio Shack, a low quality consumer electronics chain. The White Castle of microphones.
Always thought it was an Aerosmith diss, as Steven Taylor always had pantyhose tied to his mic stand 🤷🏻♂️

Some incredible bars in this track. MCA mentioning the disrespect to women has got to be through might be the best verse they've ever said in their discography.
Absolutely. Addressing the huge problem that hip-hop culture has had with misogyny with those lines has always felt like an I portent statement of intent. They were refusing to switch up their style just to fit in, not just stylistically but also in subject matter.
I wish that line didn't still feel necessary and relevant.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thoes lines by MCA are quite specifically talking about Hip Hop's deeply ingrained misogyny e.g. habitual references to women as b*tches and h*es. MCA publicly disowned some of the Beastie Boys older lyrics, saying they were young, ignorant and didn't really understand at the time. When they played songs like No Sleep Till Brooklyn live from then on, it's noticeable how certain lyrics were replaced (it isn't hard to figure out which ones!). Other hip hop artists have quietly censored lyrics to make their music more mainstream and accessible, but the Beastie Boys are the only ones I'm aware of who actually drew attention to this and explained their stance had changed.
@@mikegloady It was also kind of a mission statement of leaving some of the sort of juvenile stuff they had on their first album behind. They weren't exactly proud of some of their lyrics on tracks like "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and "Girls", and while that was all intended somewhat satirically, they had kind of fallen (or been pushed by Def Jam) into the trap of becoming the thing they were mocking. This was a few albums and a lot of growth later, but they still had that history that they were somewhat ashamed of, and MCA wanted to make it clear to the public that that's not what they were about anymore.
I think this was also around the time they apologized to their original drummer Kate Schellenbach for kicking her out of the band and signed her band Luscious Jackson to their new label Grand Royal.
@@IamLertimo "MCA's in the back with the mahjong board" is what they sing live.
“I've got more action than my man, John Woo
And I've got mad hits like I was Rod Carew” John Woo was a director of action movies, and Rod Carew was a baseball player. 🔥 There are so many dope references in the song. Also, the shoutout to our women out there. Respect.
They mentioned Lee Perry, who's influential in Dub style Reggae. They later worked with him on the Hello Nasty album. Lee "Scratch" Perry died in the summer of '22.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
yesss, one of my favorite MCA rhymes, love and respect to all the women 🧡
BBoys lyrics about women were quite disrespectful in the early days. What MCA says is an apology for that past objectification and misogyny. They changed some old lyrics in live performances, too.
RIP, MCA. You were the best.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽RIP
In She's on it they're roofying a girl with Spanish fly
@@StaxReacts To add to this, I just watched your reaction to Girls before coming to this one. I was going to comment the same thing - older Beasties felt bad about the way they talked about women, but to me, it was just young guys having fun and being silly. As someone who listened to this when it first came out, I never felt motivated to treat women poorly because of song lyrics.
Glad you liked it. And you take some good messages with you. I'm the same way with women and my policy with hands. I had Tammy Jackson throw a sewing machine at me in 8th grade, a woman hit me with a beer bottle in a bar, an ex girlfriend punched me and I'm proud I never returned fire. I've been tested and so far I've passed. Dignity always wins out in the end.

When I saw them in 1992, I was shocked that they played most of the instruments themselves. Odd instruments, too. Just listen to some of the sounds they produce. Very talented group.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🔥🔥‼️
As a woman and mother to a little girl, thank you for saying that about not putting your hands on a woman. 👏👏👏👏 that verse from MCA makes me smile every time.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Yeah I'm with that as well, to a point, but what if she gotta knife or gun? Still gonna try to talk and reason with her then? That's the only time I see it being ok to drop her.
@@tupac1971everDrop her like a mic 🎤 💥 after a dis ?? 🤣🤣🤣
Dude, I am so impressed how you understand all the references! 🫶🏻 This video was shot in my town… VEGAS BABY!
Thank you so much 🙏🏽
So a standing on a soapbox is a really old reference. When you had something to say to a crowd and wanted to be heard, you would step up on your soapbox. Literally standing on a small crate to make yourself taller in a crowd. I always took the lyric "The top notch is my stock on the soapbox" to mean he he keeps getting better. What was once his top notch has been surpassed by his later works. But those songs were still a part of his life that helped him climb.
Ahhhh gotcha thank you brother
I listened to this song 50 times day back in high school when it came out. So dope.
Amazingg
I always thought the pantyhose was in reference to what a thief wears during a robbery. He doesn’t have to steal, bite, or rip off anyone else when rocks the mic.
Trueeee
Hey Stax , loving your reaction videos . As a man from Australia who grew up listening to the Beastie Boys , it’s great to hear someone from today who shows them the respect they earnt .
Thank you so much, glad you’re enjoying it🙏🏽🙏🏽
My all-time favorite Beasties song. So smooth, great beat.
Facttttssss
Before portable microphones and amplifiers, street preachers used to bring a wooden crate to stand on that had often used to be used to ship soap and often had the "SOAP" label still on it.

Another reaction channel - with a guy in his forties, so of course life experience, loved this line too and pointed out that Hip Hop was about being a kind of superhero, very confident and so on. He said AD Rock is saying - "I'm so fly, I don't have to change my style to fit in with anyone else - if anything, YOU change YOUR style to fit me - but I don't change my style." I love that both of you guys picked out that line. Great reaction as always!

FLAME bruh ! I remember back when this album Ill Communication came out , I was non stop skateboarding with this in my boombox blasting as a soundtrack ! Skaters back then was cool , we would listen to punk , Hip Hop , Thrash Metal it didnt matter . Plus every creed and color of folks were in that scene and we never thought twice about it . We were all brothers and looked out for each other . All for one and one for all !

The pantyhose line is referring to the pop filter in front of the mic. Looks like a ring or loop with pantyhose material stretched over it.
Gotcha thank you
He says he never rock the mic with the pantyhose, because he's pure MC ....real! Live!

The sound/production of this song is beautiful. The lyrics are one of the best the beastie boys have done. Love the song. I like to see a reaction from you about the song play that funky music from wild cherry. And please check out for yourself cam cole from england. He is a one man dirty blues band, looks like jack sparrow, and make all off his music and videos in the do it yourself style. Check him out on you tube. I think you have never seen anything else like him bevor. Imagine he plays guitar, drums, sings play harmonica all at the same time and he rocks. My first introducing to him was the tv series ted lasso

In the 1800 or early 1900s, people would take a "Soap Box" which is a wooden crate that soap shipped in to use as a platform to stand up on and preach or protest and talk politics, etc on the street. That is what MCA meant "my top notch is my stock on the soap box" as he had many issues he was vocal about, especially the treatment of the Tibetan people. He put together the Free Tibet concerts. (And he's making the funny talking hand gestures in the video during that line) there are older sayings like "get off your soap box".... meaning to stop talking. That is a really rough explanation but 😊
Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

A soap box is a wooden box that street corner preachers/political activists used to stand on back in the day so they would be more visible to people walking the city streets.

I tried but the audio was too low
@@StaxReacts How sad to hear that, it's a wonderful concert.
You could then react to "Vivir para contarlo by Violadores del verso" a Spanish rap group, from the old school. very good. In Spain and South America the rap scene is quite big. saludos mi amigo, new sub.
Ok, how much of their catalogue are you through now? So damn good.
🔥🔥🔥
Never rocks the mic with the pantyhose... he does a straight mic in his hand so he can move around... Like all good emcee's
Ahhh got you
MCA's line about disrespecting women is in response to how they objectified women in their early songs and videos. Some people don't grow up, but the Beasties did and hence the opology.

I used to abuse women. I had mixed feelings about my mother. So there is a correlation. Fortunately, I met a woman who pit my sad black ass in jail back in 1999. She's still my heart and soul today. Just talking in the interest of transparency. I've done what I've done. Thanks to a great woman, I learned.
Life is all about growth man. We’re all human and make mistakes. It’s just about overcoming those obstacles and wanting change. Proud of you for altering your mindset and actions 💯‼️
@@StaxReacts All thanks have to go to the amazing Mary, my beacon. I was an insecure chump. She brought out my light. But I appreciate the acknowledgement. Now, if you want to hear the greatest lyrics ever in a song, check out "Stand" by Sly and the Family Stone. You've probably heard it, because it's one of the best ever. For me the best ever. In fact, that band is the best ever in my opinion. Sly and the Family Stones greatest hits will win you or lose you. I'm betting you'll be forever hooked. Peace out.
Led Zeppelin. Trampled under Foot. No video I know of. But a great song.

Hello Stax, I thought I'd suggest another new artist to give a listen, if interested. "Kenny Rogers - Through The Years (Live Video)" (by the channel: Johisfas) --American country music artist Kenny Rogers released the album "Share Your Love" in 1981 as the fourth single. The song was written by Steve Dorf and Marty Panzer and it peaked at number #13 on the music charts and stayed there for eleven weeks...in otherwards this song is a Banger. lol (Oh and heads up this song is not country, he also crossed over into other genres such as soft rock and R&B)

about not using a microphone pop screen filter that can be made out of material that looks like pantyhose. In other words his bars are unfiltered.
