Quick note : life tracker apps are usually not allowed during competitive REL, since you shouldn't look at your phone. Judges usually make exceptions for the boogie board

I think that's also cause you could rig it in some way, have someone text you what's in someone else's hand and just dismiss it, and there isn't any record of what happened should a disagreement come up.

I think trading card game product companies should watch many of the product review videos from this channel. It does such a great way of finding out opinions, flaws and comparisons between products, both from the same company and from others, and helps a lot in the process of (re)designing future product.
Thanks for all the effort you've put and keep up the good work professor!

Thanks a lot for reviewing our app! Small tip, you can just tap on the number to lower the score by one, and tap above it to raise by one. We also have an Android app available here play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.minu.lifecount2020.app&hl=en

+TechRavingMad Sorry but no. We made this app precisely because other counters were doing just that and I don't think it's as good. Try putting the counter in 90 degrees rotation between the players and both will see the counts perfectly. I can recommend 20 Life or Mutility if you'd still like a counter like that!

I agree with everyone below on Mutility. While it's $4 to unlock all of the features, if you're someone that likes simplicity or if you're like me and really enjoy the aesthetic part of MTG, it's more than worth it. Very intuitive and responsive use, large buttons and easily visible life totals, and editable history. My favourite part though is one that seems like it would be shrugged off, but the ability to rotate and change the orientation of life totals depending on your table is awesome for me. I love the look of this game and I'm a bit of a nutter for orderliness and this app just satisfies me by looking so nice with everything lined up in the middle of the table.

Personally I'm a big fan of LifeTap. It's an app that let's you have anywhere from 2-6 players, customize backgrounds with colors, color spectrums, or even straight up card art, create logs of all of the named players you've made and which backgrounds they've used for quickly setting up new games, has a mana counter which includes colorless and storm tokens, counts things like commander tax, infect demage, treasure tokens, Monarch, Ascend, and Exp. It also keeps track of commander damage and can accomadate having two commanders in both damage and background. Built in dice roller and player randomizer, and even lets you play planechase. All of this and it's completely free, including planechase.

I have the Crit Success ring myself. I have stopped using it for my own life totals due to it being hidden away on my finger. What I like to do with it now is keep track of my opponent's life.
Mine doesn't quite fit perfectly, but it's pretty close. I wear it daily, so it's quite comfortable. At the very least it makes for a good conversation piece.

  • @howardhouse9913

Professor! I have a Boogie Board that I take with me to every FNM, and it was purchased at Sam's Club for 19.99, and it even came with the case! I highly recommend alerting people to this low price. At $20, I feel the Boogie Board is far above other means of tracking life totals. There is also some thing to be said that in the event of a discrepancy of life between two players, judges will side with whoever has a history of life total changes, AND phones are not permitted at larger tournaments for life tracking.

  • @jaxongray5605
    @jaxongray5605 Před 8 lety +1

You could also use MTG Familiar which has a life total keeper with buttons and can add additional players. Plus it has a mana base keeper, a list of all the rules and best of all it has every card ever printed in MTG on a offline database with pictures and prices for said cards with WiFi. This makes it a lot easier to look up cards when you or your opponent has a foreign card.

    • @yklys10s

Hey Professor! There actually is a way to do singular inputs on the app. If you do a tap above the life total it adds one and if you tap on or below the number it subtracts one. Give it a shot!

I'm a Boogie board user, love it. saves space in my bag and i never run out of paper or pen ink, or break a pencil tip. best one reviewed here for competitive play.
I think its worth noting a disclaimer, DO NOT use an app at a tournament. I always double checked with opponents at FNMs before using an app. You do not want to be accused of cheating, and you definitively will be at Competitive REL. I use MTG Familiar for Commander play.
    Great reviews Prof! thanks!

  • @senselocke
    @senselocke Před 6 lety

I've played with people who often "forgot" to track damage. In those cases, I wore the clicker ring on my left thumb, and used it to keep track of THEIR life total. You can also just take it off and lay it on the table during a match. I'd personally rate it a little higher, but it's kind of a niche case (and since my fingers swell a lot, I'm used to rings not fitting well).

  • @tackle47

I use the AMLC app on my iPhone and have for over a year. By far the best I have tried. Goes up to 4 players and handles EDH, including which player has done commander damage to whom. It had an unobtrusive ad on the bottom but highly recommend you check it out.

Good reviews. I see you put a lot of effort to point out the freeness of the iOS life counter you described ;] I think you would love iMtG Life Counter, as it ticks all the important boxes you talked about in your video. There is a bit of a string attached: app and Life Counter around which it is built is free, but it includes card database which show iAds vetted by Apple (optional purchase in Shop disables the ads, of course). Again, I think you would love it ;]

I love the ProCard life counter available for free from the Amazon app store. I have it on my android tablet, I'm not sure if it's available for the iPhone.
I like it because it offers a simple but customizable display. You can easily adjust your life total, it keeps track of the adjustments for you, you can have up to 8 players on it, and best of all, the price is excellent.
I find it superior to the one shown in this video because oftentimes using a swipe can accidentally end up taking too much or too little life off and you have to make another adjustment.
The one and only drawback that I see is that you do have a banner add reminding you that this was produced by ProCard, but I find that just as easy to live with as the Ultra Property logo in the corner of my playmat.

As a soul sisters player a competent way of keeping life totals is important so I pretty much have two ways of doing it
When I have it on me or for more competitive matches I have a small notebook I got at Rite-aid which I keep life totals/ matches / and a Phyrexian Revoker shortlist I keep in the back to study when I am playing Death and Taxes while I am between rounds.
Other then that I use the iMtg app which has a good life counter that is slightly customizable since you can choose how much the buttons go up and down or you can just slide. It has the ability to track 8 players and the ability to track poison and commander damage. The best part about the app though is the easy to access card database which I use for checking trade value.

+tolarian community college I've got a boogie board, and I call it an electronic 'etch-a-sketch' for people who don't get the concepts. I bring it to FNMs and larger events, where life totals matter, and keep it tucked away for casual games. I've found the screen to be a bit sensitive; I tends to get marked up with lines from when I'm putting the stylus down. I can usually record an entire match unless life totals fluctuate greatly.

It does everything the app in the video does, plus has the definite +/- buttons you mentioned, the ability to add players and lots of color options. You can even set what you want the starting life to be if you play more EDH than other and want it to start at 40 instead of 20. I use it on an iPhone and it is great. It can also be used in formats like Commander where it keeps track of commander damage and life separately. Free and ad-free, I could go on about its features as there are many more to list.

would love some small notebooks that are 2.5" by 3.5" that I could put into my ultipro satin tower, that way I would have everything in one box.
I am new to MTG and TCG's in general, so I prefer to have records of my games, I also like to write some notes on the archetypes I played against and some cards that were interesting or devastating.

On the app, you can increase and decrease in increments of 1 by simply tapping above or below the relevant life total. So that's your only criticism addressed. A+ maybe?

I have to mostly disagree, but partially agree, with your Critsucess ring assessment. I don't find it very difficult to change the numbers. It can be a little awkward at times, but I'd prefer that to it being too easy and the number accidentally changing. The ring sizing, yes I agree it is not correct. In ordered my correct size, but it was a little too snug. but that's not a huge issue because they offer a lifetime exchange. You can send it back and they'll send you another size for free. The last part is where I have to totally agree with you. It's not good for competitive play where you're opponent can't see your life total. It works for my needs because I use it as a threat tracker for the Lord of the Rings LCG (which I didn't realize until I actually had it and put it on is super thematic), but that's a very specific and niche use for it and wouldn't fit the needs of any but a handful of people.

There is an iOS app called “Thueyts II” It's even better than Mutility and it's free. However it‘s only available on older version of iOS since the developer didn't upgrade it. It’s so incredible that I would like to use it even it's not free.

You which phone users don't get a lot of love? Windows phones... (really wish I had an adroid way too often). For anyone interested I use MTG bugs mainly because it has life counters, dice, rss for some feeds (although I don't use it much), ability to track collection (although I use deckbox.org for that), and access to a card lookup. Also, the MTG life counter app is good because its ad free and pretty quick.

Hey Professor, I enjoy watching your videos and getting your insight about the game as well as product reviews. Do you know if there is a product that you can buy that's a vigilance or flying counter, for instance? Like, if flying is granted to a creature, is there a pair of wings you can put down on the card to indicate that it now has flying capabilities?
