    I've been meaning to get a playmat for quite some time now (months ago) and was def eyeing Inked Playmats based on your review of them before. I already had two wonderfully beautiful designs picked out and finally earlier this week I ordered one. I must say Professor you're hitting it out of the ballpark with your reviews and grades, that's 3 major products I've purchased from, based mostly on your word (the other two being Legion Binders and Dragon Shield sleeves).
    The playmat arrived, very ironically, while I was at home playing a game of Magic with my best friend and kindly excused myself while I "Blinged" out my side of the table xP! It was wonderfully printed, felt even better, almost smooth as silk, no curls from being rolled up and ultimately felt fantastic to place, turn and slide sleeves along.
    I can honestly say Professor that my gratitude and thankfulness is deeply extended by the fact that, many of these products would not be known to me if it were not for this channel!

    I'm a leather artisan, and I woder what did the Wyrmwood folk where thinking. They're masters of woodcraft, but certainly leather is not their forte.
    If you roll leather like that, it'll be hell to lay if down flat, as it happened with the one sent to the professor. As for the rugged look, that's a personal thing, and I love the rugged look (I favour for both personal stuff and merchandise vegtan leather for that reason, among other things)
    But aye, while it's nice to see them branching out and not just sticking to boxes, perhaps they should scrap this one project and look for something else.

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  Před 8 lety +11

      So as a leather artisan, let me ask you, what would be the best process/style for someone wanting to make a leather playmat, knowing that playmats are likely to be rolled or folded up for frequent transport?

    • @Mtonazzi
      @Mtonazzi Před 8 lety +29

      Out of the blue, I have no insight to give, but if someone really wanted to carry a leather playmat, I'd recommend ot to not roll it, and place it last inside the bag, resting on top of the binder and deck boxes one may be carrying.
      Another thing is that without proper care, the leather will suffer a lot. From what I've seen on your video, looks like dyed vegtan (chrome tanned leather looks more shiny), and if not hydrated regularly it'll become brittle. For that, the best I recommend is neatfoot's oil, but smells like if someone opened the gates to Hell, so second best is getting the cheapest hand lotion one can grab and apply it to the leather and let it rest overnight, then remove the unabsorbed excess with a paper towel.
      If the leather was finer (1mm thickness) and properly hydrated, it may lay flatter than the one you've got, but it's a hard leather to work with (they won't be able to emboss their brand, or many designs on it without risking damage to it during production). Then there's also price, 2 or 3mm thickness is the sweet spot for price on leather, if you go either thicker or thinner it becomes more and more expensive (the former for bulk, the later for quality), and 1 square meter of 1mm thick leather may cost almost twice as much as a 2mm square meter.
      Now, faux leather on the other hand, can be rolled without issues, looks like leather but behaves not much differently from a textile. I used a piece of faux leather as a playmat for a long time until some friends got me a custom printed one for a birthday present.

      Ya. I'm probably going to get a couple since we have little tournaments at all our BBQ's, and these would be great for the more kitchen table players that come, since it helps them keep their cards in the right spot. Since more casual players tend to put their stuff all over the place.

      That playmat throws me off a lil as I'm righthanded, so I'd constantly have to use they side where they have a spot for your deck and Graveyard xP Not a big thing, but I'm surprised both sides weren't set in that fashion. For the Inked Double playmats, they had one of a Green Mana tree for one side and the flipped for the opposite side semi looked liked a dying one, making me think Green/Black (which happen to be my fav colors and combo).

    • @yoyothriller

      You're in luck! Inked provides two player mats with both players having rightsided libraries and graveyards. www.inkedgaming.com/products/two-player-match-mat Just select "right handed zones" under the title tab. Still a tad more expensive, but since its my go-to kitchen table mat its worth it. Happy gaming!

    I've had the leather one for a few years now and really like it. I wasn't thinking to impress, so maybe that's part of it. I got it because I know leather is durable, and food and grime wipe right off. Plus it looks old - which I like. I don't have to worry about it like I do with my fancy mats. For example right now it's rolled up, tossed on the coffee table next to an ashtray with ash spilled over onto it. Doesn't bother me a bit because I know it will clean right up. This mat will only get better looking as it's used, unlike any other I know off. I wish it were bigger, though, and am considering having a larger one made with a custom Lord of the Rings graphic. Have had no issues the with card slide thing, although it's not as slidy as the synthetic options. Every six months or so leather treatment has to be put on, so that's maintenance. My better looking matts are all stored in a box, never to be used. This leather one gets all the abuse.

    Nice video, but I want to get a small detail clear: Hydrocarbons (which are chemical compunds consisting of the elements hydrogen and carbon) in general are not necessarily a problem concerning health. I assume you are talking about Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), a lot of those have been proven to be carcinogenic and PAH levels of toys for example have been an issue. You are excused from this minor mistake since you create great content and you are an English major. I hope you also forgive me for the linguistic flaws I might include in this comments, because I am an engineering major and English is not my native language :) Keep up the good work!

    A really great suggestion to more creative players on a budget. Inked has blank playmats that are a few bucks cheaper than they're pre-designed or custom mats. I bought a slightly larger size and drew a design I liked in sharpie. with a little bit of time to dry and some weather proofing, like scotch guard, the colors stay really well.

    I think a mechanic that might be useful that could be in Kaladesh because Kaladesh is a techy plane and they might have lots of stuff with artifact decks is a mechanic called 'charge'. It would have a cost to turn an artifact or artifact creature face down for a mana cost, it would become a 1/1, or something like that, and at the beginning of each of your upkeeps, put a +1+1 counter on it. And at any time, for a mana cost you could turn it face up with the same amount of +1+1 counters.

    Professor, maybe try some leather conditioner on the Wormwood playmat? I do a lot of work with leather and the easiest way to break it in is Lexol leather conditioner. It will leave a residue until it dries, so be careful of that. That's the only bad thing about leather; if not taken care of, it will eventually dry out.

  • @volatilesky
    @volatilesky Před 5 lety

    Wyrmwood uses 8oz leather, which is about 1/8" or about 3.3mm thick, which for $50 usd is a little steep (24x14"=2.3 square feet, so just under $25²). I mean leather is priced by the square foot, so a large flat piece does become costly fast. I'm not impressed that it's basically a banner on the table for their logo however. I work with leather a lot and I wouldn't suggest it for a playmat myself - it does take care and maintenance to keep it looking nice, with oil or other finishes needing application depending on use (which again, not a great idea as this is for use with cards). I would imagine it might be alright if you're not transporting it, and instead use it for a home game only situation, heavier leather always wants to "remember" the shape it's most often left in.
    The other issue is dirt - leather will get dirty, and sure that's a patina you expect from a worn in piece of leather, but not a playmat. But their site ONLY lists it as stone oiled buffalo, 8oz. It doesn't specify whether it's top grain, full grain or the suede (my guess is full grain?). This really impacts your ability on how and what you can effectively clean the surface with. And as the point is to provide a pristine surface for your cards, that can be washed as needed, well, I love leather but not for this.
    The gamer mat I do have my eye on however, his artwork is amazing.

    Sweet, Peter Mohrbacher made an album art for Fallujah, I thought he seemed familiar.

    Got the ultimate guard swamp version but it had a strange dented curve along the bottom of it. Knowing that we can machine wash these makes me less disheartened and am now thinking about that to remove said dent

    Those ultimate guards are so cheap yet so great. Wonder if they'll eventually do dual lands.

    have you tried baseball glove conditioner on the Wyrmwood mat? Shaving cream is another trick one of my friends used to soften leather.

    I just went to Gamer Mats website and it is not a very well designed web page at all. i was looking to order one of the play mats with the stitched border because the one in your review looks amazing, but i cant seem to find out how to select any options at all for any of the play mats on the page.

    I am a MAT junkie. This is exactly what I needed. But now I have a dilemma: Will I have enough money to buy Playmats AND Magic cards? Dang...
