The man who wrote the book you held up, Stephen E. Ambrose, taught me history at the University of New Orleans in the 1970's. He is listed as an executive producer in the credits. I know you guys probably recorded all of this a while ago (I remember you saying something about doing it for your Patreon folks in a previous video,) but I recommend watching all of BOB first and just falling in love with those characters. The Pacific just has a completely different tone. The brotherhood of these specific guys is what makes it special. My grandpa was in the 101st Airborne. Not Easy Company but somewhere else. He never wanted to talk about it because of all of the things you two are about to witness in the ensuing episodes. Most veterans I've heard from really appreciate this series. I look forward to your reactions!

      @rofyle Před 2 lety +5

My grandfather was over there too. He won a purple heart, which wasn't too hard to do in that war. He didn't like talking about it either. The men of that generation were a different breed. They didn't want to be called heroes, and they didn't like drawing attention to themselves. They treated their time served as if it was just doing their duty.

This is not a true story. It is just based on real events, Stephen E. Ambrose is not a historian and is generally a hate figure among historians for distorting facts. Most of the events in BoB were attributed to the 101st, but they were carried out by several thousand men and not just the 15 you see in the show, Stephen depicted Dick Winters' squad as having done them all just for the miniseries because it's easier to get an audience attached to a recurring character than to depict different people in every episode. Dick Winters was never anywhere near a concentration camp and he certainly never sat in the Eagle's Nest with Nixon.
I hate when people perpetuate the myth that this is a true story.

While watching this I noticed for the first time that when Sobel is laying into Winters he uses the word "irregardless," which isn't actually a word in standard English. I think it was a conscious decision in the script (or in Schwimmer's performance) to subtly reinforce that Sobel was "punching above his weight" when it came to his leadership skills vs. what was required for the job.

The internet being what it is, no worries about saying something and getting it wrong. I'd figure the whole point of a reaction video is to see how other people with their different perspectives have their first take on something new. It's being familiar enough with a film that you can recite it in your sleep, but wanting to see the audience's reaction, what hits hardest and what might have been confusing or interesting for them, or new things that we tend not to see when something becomes that familiar.

This was the first thing I ever saw Damian Lewis in, and, he does such a good American accent, I had no idea, until a year later, that he was British!

A majority of the actors in this are British, or Irish.
Liebgott, Blythe, Sgt Martin, the red-headed officer who chews out Sobel for cutting the fence (thick Scottish accent).
Christianson (Irish), Janovec, Popeye Wayans, Pvt Miller, Doc Roe, Sgt Grant, Alton Moore, Floyd Talbot.
Sgt Evans, 'Babe' Heffron, Lt Harry Welsh, Sgt Graham, Cobb, Alex Penkala, Pvt John Hall, Hoobler.
      Etc.
Easier to list the non-British/Irish actors, actually. (It was filmed in the UK).

The coloration is supposed to be like old WW2 footage. And when they stare at the camera they are dramatizing real footage of paratroopers getting on the planes before D-Day

I've watched you guys since your first video and STILL can't remember who's who so forgive me if I say the wrong name but, TOM, black "Rum, and Ham" shirt. you said something that was so powerful I think a lot of people miss it. When Sobel (Ross) is told he's not going to war, that's a profound moment for that character because like every one of those men, HE'S WAITED HIS ENTIRE LIFE TO GO TO WAR AND DO THIS, and he's so close but so far away. It would be like training your whole life to be a soccer player or whatever and the week or the biggest playoff games ever, you're told you're not playing, they need you to train the team at home, and you can't even be in the stadium.

I've read the book the series is based on. It's called Citizen Soldiers. In the book the guys hated Sobel so much that even after the war they refused to use his name. Everyone just called him "HIM" as though he were Voldemort, he who shall not be named. Lol.

Gentlemen: Would you rather serve in winter extremes (for example,The Battle of the Bulge with frostbite, artillery exploding trees into deadly flying shards) or the extreme heat of the Pacific theater with lice, trench foot, dehydration, Japanese prison camps)?
After this series, perhaps you could check out "Hell In The Pacific" starring Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mufune. Directed by John Boorman

very good series. and according to the men it is about, pretty good historical accuracy as well. Some things that happened to two or more men are attributed to one man to keep the flow and time for the show. but very close to what actually happened. Great men for a desperate time.

Lmao I can't wait until Episode 3. At least 50% of the comments are going to be people hating on the entire episode because "They got all the facts wrong about (A****t B****e) and the creators of the show should be ashamed of themselves" true story movies and shows always have mistakes. This series is one of my favorite pieces of war story media out there and I hope you guys enjoy the rest of it!

Apparently, Guarnere and Heffron went to what they thought was Blythe's funeral (I think the funeral was a different Blythe / or Blyth) and during interviews for the book, they told (mistakenly) the writer (Ambrose) that they had gone to Blythe's funeral.
