    I sent this to my husband when he was in Iraq. They were halfway through the first episode and the CO walked in. Made them restart it. Then posted an announcement the first episode would be replayed in a larger area the next day followed by episode 2. It was awesome. It was passed around to several units before he came home with it. My husband was one of the Veterans that died on a VA waiting list 7 years ago. Band of Brothers is sitting on my bookshelf. The insides still have Iraqi sand in it.

    Captain Sobel wasn't a demotion, it was a sidewards move. He was sent back to take charge of a training school instead of leading easy company, he was good a training not combat leadership

    • @macmcleod1188
      @macmcleod1188 Před 3 lety +18

      Sobel also parachuted into Normandy with the rest of the invasion. And was recalled to duty during the Korean War.
      Band of Brothers reflects the opinions of this group of people.
      Don't get me wrong, the historical record reflects that Sobel was not well liked and not a good combat officer. But this shows up in other areas such as their views on Dyke and their belief that Bland was dead.
      It looks like Dyke had been shot in the shoulder in reality and may have been suffering from the same kind of combat fatigue as Buck. He had won multiple awards for bravery earlier in the war and may have even saved some Band of Brothers lives in Market Garden. But the band knew buck and liked him so they were sympathetic to him.

    I've always believed that Capt Sobel was moved to the training school, because the major realised that although he was good at training top notch soldiers he would be a liability in the field so reassigned him to where his skills would actually be useful but not risk any lives in the actual war

    • @iKvetch558
      @iKvetch558 Před 3 lety +18

      I agree...they made sure they could continue to utilize his talent for training and organization, but kept him off the battlefield preventing him from getting all his men killed. The Army did not always do as good a job at detecting bad combat officers and keeping them out of combat. 👍

    When all the Sergeants in a unit are willing to risk courts martial over serving under an officer, you known there is something critically wrong and it was the only way to get the attention of the top brass. Sobel knew all the right things to say to his superiors, but the Sergeants know. Good thing Sobel was punished-promoted. He was too bad of a field /command officer to get just himself killed (if somebody from Easy didn't do it for him first). As for Guarnere, either that message should have been held, or Guarnere pulled from the jump. My Gunny would have. You do *not* want somebody in that head space in combat. He;d be as dangerous as Sobel.

There are some creative licenses, and some times stories of multiple real life people get combined in to 1 character, but its really only for time, clarity, and so they can work with a more focused cast. "Everything he did had a purpose" - he has traits of a psychopathic personality. Main reason was to make himself look better, to climb up as fast as he could, and gather as many accolades as he could, at the cost of those under his command. He considered himself above them, not just by the rank. All of that married with incompetence. He was punishing anybody who dared to stand up to him in any way, throwing blame at others for his own flaws and taking revenge on people who he perceived as responsible for exposing them.
    "Their infractions, and your disciplinary recommendations on my desk at 0130, is that clear?"
    "What infractions, sir?"
    "Find some".
    ( Does all of that remind you of someone? )
    ------------------------------------------
    That's based on portrayal in the series. Having psychopathic traits does not make one a psychopath - after all, nearly all of us have some - it's a matter of scale. It doesn't mean there weren't some positive qualities about him, but they were outweigh by negative (which will be further proven by "We salute the rank, not the man" scene and other). You could imagine him as spoiled upper-ish class kid, taking advantage of power and taking "revenge" for bullying, or a childish man looking for admiration and missing fatherly love, and self-proclaimed protector of morality blind to his own inadequacies - but in any case spiced with an unhealthy dose of supercilious attitude and other nastiness.

    Not a documentary, but the people at the beginning and end are the actual people the actors are playing in the series. This is quite possibly the greatest miniseries ever made (obviously, that's arguable). So good.

    20:16 The British soldier is speaking in Cockney Rhyming Slang.
    He says: "You're having a bath if you think you're half-inching that".
    "Bath" is rhyming slang for "laugh", and "half-inch" is slang for "pinch" or "steal".
    So in plain English he says "You're having a laugh if you think you're pinching that".

    I only just found your channel and I watched all your videos lol love your stuff mr g. Your gonna really like the story of band of brothers. And also bare in mind this is a well documented true story and in some of the extra scenes in the dvd in the making they have interviews with some of the real guys that this story follows. They are the guys that speak at the start of each episode.
    If o could recommend their good movies to watch that have really good depictions of ww2 I would suggest a bridge too far which is the film of operation market garden into Holland. And the thin red line which is long but it’s about the USA fighting the Japanese in the pacific. I see people recommended the pacific which is also a great series. Looking super forward to more of your videos. You have a real great vibe when it comes to watching military stuff.

    Colonel Sink recognized that CPT Sobel was an excellent *trainer*, but had no ability in the field. It's one thing to be good at PT and to have a squared-away uniform, to know the drills and to have the ability to instill discipline. It's another thing entirely to be able to employ fieldcraft, think tactically, be calm under pressure, and understand the needs of the men under your command. Sobel failed completely in the latter regard, and Sink recognized that Sobel didn't have the trust of his men. Moving him to another training assignment was his only real option.

  • @roccaclassico9028

    Sobel excelled at training, but was a dangerously inept field commander. Even though he comes across as seemly cruel to his men, whenever he made them run Currahee he ran with them. I think he felt threated by Winters because he realized that Winters was the superior leader.
    BTW, before filming began the actors portraying the soldiers were put through a mini-basic training. Also, each actor portrayed a real-life member of the 101st (the names aren't fictionalized), some of whom provide the commentary at the beginning of each episode.

It's training you to be able to handle puking in a stressed environment like, if a snap opsec is issued for QRF and we have to move NOW or your camp comes under IDF with MASCAL evac... I got it thrice during training at Sand Hill then again during FTX at Campbell and once more during JRTC at Polk

    You know what's great is that in later interviews several survivors from Easy Company after the war, credit Captain Sobel's hellish training for their survival. So say what you want about how this show depicts how much of an asshole he was, but the men afterward were thankful of him for it.

    A lot of people that enlisted during WWII enlisted because quite literally every other male in this country was being sent off to fight the war and so many lost their lives. Theres a tremendous amount of guilt that comes with that, hence the suicides. Regarding the NCOs..
    the senior ranking mutineer was transferred. Mike Rainey was demoted. The rest kept their ranks. Rainey, through combat experience, was able to get his stripes back somewhat quickly.
    The Company First Sergeant did not mutiny. He was the guy with Sobel when Sobel was inspecting the barracks just before he promoted Winters and the guy who sent Winters the summons to Winters to see Sobel in the meeting where Winters chooses court-martial. The Company 1st Sergeant was known to be a brown-noser to Sobel. He was not liked or respected by anyone except Sobel.
