I would tend to agree, but everyone’s different with their parenting, and I don’t want to come across as pushy.
I’m in the same boat as you though. I was building models of WW2 planes, jeeps, and tanks from about age 7 or 8, and I can remember watching movies like Tora! Tora! Tora! and The Battle of Midway, along with Kelly’s Heroes, Memphis Belle, and the Dirty Dozen on TV when I was 10. Saw movies like Schindler’s List, and Life is Beautiful at a very young age.
The funny thing is I thought it was normal to be exposed to that kind of stuff at a young age, and was surprised it wasn’t the same for other kids.

The ten thousand dollar insurance policy that many soldiers took advantage of, allowed many poor families to pay off their debts and mortgages when their sons died. Thus the slang term when a soldier died.... it was said that he "bought the farm".

Yours might be the best reaction to 'Band of Brothers' episode 1 that I've seen so far. You've been respectful and seemed to have payed close attention and not missed anything. Remember that even though Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced this series it was not some Hollywood made up story. Band of Brothers is a history book written by Steven Ambrose, who was one of the top WW2 historians of his time. He wrote the book after conducting countless interviews with the survivors of E Company 506th PIR 101st Airborne Division. He also wrote the books 'Citizen Soldiers' and 'D-Day the Whole Story'

@@SofaandChill If you want to read some great books that are actually first hand accounts of combat as a paratrooper in WW2 then I highly recommend reading 'Currahee' 'Road to Arnhem' "Seven Roads to Hell' and 'Beyond the Rhine, written by Don Burgett. 'Band of Brothers' was about Easy Company, 2nd Battalion 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne Division. Burgett served in in the same division and regiment only he served in Able Company 1st Battalion. His books are outstanding. They put you inside his head and give you a much better understanding of the experience and what was going through his mind while he's fighting and trying to survive the war.

Ah yes. My favorite historical drama. Fantastic action, drama and does a great job of showing the humanity of this war. One of the many things that inspired me to study history for a career. A great follow up after the series is the documentary, “We Stand Alone Together.” It’s a good way to finish off the series and it’s where the interviews come from at the beginning of each episode. One thing to note, these are not fictional characters, these are the real men from the interviews. Some people miss that until later, as it’s not actually shown clearly at the beginning. Currahee!

I had a high school history teacher like “ Ross”. Very strict, checked homework every day, and dished out punishment if it was not completed. I had him for 4 out of the five years of school. In the first couple of years, everyone hated him, including me, but over the years, he began to mellow with our class, and start to show his human side. Every year, an essay was due, for our final mark. In the first year, it needed to be a minimum of 10 pages. Second year, 15 pages etc up to the last year of 35 pages. I hated him.
In my first year at uni, I basically breezed through it, only because their essays max were 1000 words! He had prepared me for uni. He did his job!
During the Christmas break of my first year, I took the time to go back to my high school to thank him for preparing me properly. That is what Sobel did to Easy company!

Filmed in England, co-financed by the BBC, and 2/3's of the cast is british.
Before production started, The main cast went on a 10 day bootcamp, the real deal, ran by retired marine Corps captain Dale Dye, (he appears as colonel sink) Ron livingston (played nix) filmed a lot of it for HBO. It's worth checking out.
They wore authentic 101st airborne WW2 uniforms the entire time, ran 5 miles every morning, did almost everything the real WW2 training was, except jumping out of a real C-47, AND they weren't allowed to use their real names, they were called by the names of the real people they played. ie, Damian Lewis was only called Winters during the entire bootcamp, (and probably for the entire production)

Adjusted for inflation $50 in 1942 = $900 in 2022 money. The life insurance payout was $10,000 in 1944 money. That comes to slightly under $168,000 in 2022 money.

You are correct about Sobel, the real Sobel was an excellent training officer but was not a good field commander. He was seen by the men as unnessarily harsh and vindictive. Years later many of the Easy Company men admitted part of the reason they were so good at their jobs was the hard training they received under Sobel. The mutiny of the no-comms did happen after Sobel was transferred out of the company Winters court martial was dropped and he was reinstated as the Company Excecutiver Officer under Meehan. Winters did not find out what the men had did for him until much later. He had no idea they had literally put their lives and freedom on the line for him.

I say this every time because it's truth. This is my favorite episode in a way for the innocence. Capt. Sobel and Army noodles with ketchup are their biggest threat. While knowing what death lies ahead. Prepare to learn, laugh, grow and suffer with these Men. Currahee ♠

Christianson is Michael Fassbinder, fyi...Almost half of the actors playing members of Easy Company are UK actors. I marvel at how good their American accents are!

Oh, you are in for a show with this one, sir. This covers the US' involvement in the European Theater from Normandy to the Rhine. Be sure to check out its sister show called The Pacific afterward, which covers the Pacific Theater of WWII from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. There will be moments where you'll laugh and feel the bond between brothers, and there will be moments that will shock you to your core. That's how good both series are.

Winters always said he agreed with how hard Sobel pushed the men, but that he disliked how Sobel was petty and even worse... incompetent in the field exercises.

    • @SofaandChill
      @SofaandChill  Před 2 lety

Yeah I have heard that people did agree that his training probably save their lives in the field but he was a terrible field officer himself and panicked under pressure!

What's funny about the Sobel reassignment is not only was he not being fired, the was being PROMOTED. So there's really nothing Sobel can do to contest it. And the fact is he WAS a good trainer. Many of the men of Easy have said that while they hated the man, his hard training was a large part of why many of the survived.

This is one of my favourite series, and I watch it at least once a year. I loved all of the episodes but 6, 7 and 9 hit me the hardest. Another companion piece apart from the documentary We Stand Alone Together is a video diary put together by Ron Livingston who portrays Nixon which is also on CZcams. The actors had to do a two week army bootcamp before filming started and he documented their training. Dale Dye who portrayed Col Sink ran it (he's a Marine combat veteran from Vietnam).

Sobel wasn't a good combat leader but he is as vital as Winters because he gave Easy the start they needed. It's worth remembering🤘👏👊

Ep 2 is my favorite to rewatch, but eps 6:7: and 9 are all fantastic in their own way, but they are really intense. However, I tend to sit down only intending to watch one ep, then I watch all of them instead.
After you finish this, I would highly recommend another factual miniseries produced after a Tom Hanks movie, From the Earth to the Moon, about the Apollo program, done after Apollo 13. Just fantastic, with eps about most of the Apollo missions as well as an introductory ep about the Gemini program that preceded Apollo. Great actors, scripts that will make you laugh and cry, and the science is all really solid and well explained.

Yes, 6 & 7 are really one episode.
Before From the Earth to the Moon watch the movie The Right Stuff. It covers the Mercury program. With both of these you will know the beginnings of the space program.

Making them run up the mountain with a belly full of spaghetti seems cruel-and it is-but there is actually a method to the madness. Sobel was teaching them an important lesson...never, never, NEVER let yourself be caught unprepared. He could just as easily have said something to the effect during a lecture, but would anyone have remembered it? You can bet the way he did it, the lesson stuck.

There are different types of military skills.
Sobel got his education in military schools. He learned parade ground drill. He was from Chicago, an urban environment.
Many of the Easy men grew up in country settings. They learned how to use a rifle to hunt, how to use the cover of the ground to sneak up on a deer.
Sobel might have been a good training officer but he could not lead in the field.

A lot of american war media is pretty jingoistic and "america f yeah".
But not this, it does come close but it stays (mostly) very faithful to the actual events and it is backed by real people accounting. We stand alone together is the follow-up to this show and i heartily recommend it.
Just all around a great series, a real gauntlet of emotions.

4F is (or was) a designation that a potential recruit or draftee was physically unfit for military service. For example, one of my grandfathers had polio as a child, and even as an adult he could barely walk. He was 4F.
