Woodturning - A SOLID Mahogany Desk Fan

- Mahogany is a pleasure to work with but when it comes to woodworking and woodturning with such delicate pieces, all you can think to yourself is ‘steady hands’. That was the moto for the entirety of this how to/DIY video. I have to pat myself on the back because I didn’t have a single unplanned crack or break in the wood. To keep it short, it all went perfectly.
I have to say that’s the first time hand carving a propeller. Which I had no idea how to approach. So I just started and hoped for the best. Someone will have to show me a proper technique one day.
If you decide to do this project and you mount it on a stand with Y arms, you can use plastic washers if your fan won’t sit up straight. I tried making the mahogany washers thick enough so the pressure would pinch the fan and hold it in place. It did okay, but I found that a 1/16” hard plastic washer on each side helped out a lot.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video!

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks rod!!
For real bro lol 😂
That was the most labor intensive way to get a fan I've ever seen. AND it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! That thing looks awesome. A+!
Thanks Ryan, it definitely was!
Watching you make this gorgeous fan was a real treat.
My brother once said to me why would I spend 3 hours making a Hammer I could have bought at the hardware store for $10 I guess some people will never understand, Very very Nice Beautiful Work!!
Some people go to a mountain peak or beach to meditate, some go to their wood shop… simple as that!
Maaaan. I watched your coffee bean video and figured you were another talentless epoxy lathe hack. Then I clicked this and was blown away. Top tier creativity, God tier craftsmanship. A+, fam.
I can honestly say I have seen every thing now a freakin wooden fan
It’s gotta be one of a kind!
I'm so glad I found your channel, because you put in the effort to make perfect items! You wouldn't abandon your project because you're tired, you just keep on going until it's done
I like to think the little camera shake at the end is because he's so happy it turned out perfect
Ain't gonna lie kinda wanted to see that fan blade run on the lathe for a couple seconds lol. Nice cutting.
Maybe I'll make a youtube short for ya ;)
Wow I didn’t expect a working motor and wooden blades, this is sick af
Good job. I enjoyed watching that. Made me want to go do some woodwork, then I remembered my high school woodwork project was crap, sadly I have no talent for it.
Preston, I still think you're brutal on tools but I've gotta give credit where its due. The fan is a work of art! You may want to give some thought to that motor that's sealed inside a wooden housing with no air to breath! It may get hot enough in there to make it a fire hazard.
Haha I’m glad I could win you over! I’ll stick some vent holes behind the center of the fan blade so they’re a bit hidden. I appreciate the heads up!
@@PrestonsProjects I'm glad to read that. A temperature probe inside the case would probably produce some interesting data. BTW ...... you're right! You're an industrious young man. I SUBSCRIBED! ;-)
Beyond expectation. Thank you!
I absolutely love this fan, it’s beautiful and bespoke, all made from wood apart from the motor, I would love one of these in my own house but probably wouldn’t be able to afford this beautiful design that you have made ?.
Well done and keep up with your designs, I look forward to seeing many more, all the best Cat 😺🏴🏴🏴❤️
You sir are a crazy person. Amazing work
When you don't want to go all the way to the store to get a fan.
Bro that epic you should keep making things like this
You are very talented ,,,nice little desk fan
CONGRATULATIONS ‼️‼️‼️
Haha thanks again Bettie!
All of your creations are but this one is AMAZING!!! What an incredible talent you have!
Freaking gorgeous, ma dude! This is the second video I've seen of yours and you gained a sub! I don't know how you don't have a million already! My dad is going to LOVE this channel when I tell him! Mind if I share it around?
Thank you so much! Yeah, go for it!
Looks great, awesome work! Would love to see what it would look like with some dark finish because that's more my taste, but it still looks excellent as is!
Genius idea and remarkable workmanship.
Thank you Jim!
Loved every minute of the video
I'm an HVAC tech and have a lot of experience with fans of course. I think you did a really good job so I would like to make a couple of suggestions. As to the blade design it looks basically good but I'm not a fan engineer but I think if you sanded the spokes to have a fine edge inside and out it would improve the air flow quite a bit. The only other thing is you need to have vents where air can flow across the back of the motor so it runs cooler and draws less amps and last longer. But still I really like it. It's very cool.
I have subscribed I like your channel very much Have a great day.
Superb mind-blowing......
Thank you!!
AWSOME !! !!
Nice Fan. ;- )
That's creative!
I thought so! Thank you!

I appreciate it!
It's priceless!
It’s gonna stay in the family for a loooonnnggg time! This is probably my favorite piece I’ve ever made
Way cool
Thanks Tim!
The work is incredible! But what about the balance of the propeller and how does the engine cool?
Cool.
Take that, injection moulding. Eat this, 3D printing.
I'm very surprised he managed to balance the propeller.
Boa ideia, dá serra tico tico
Thank you!
Just a question: How effective is it at blowing air? How far can you feel the airflow from it?
Only thing I would say is probably put the cord at the back if it can be done. Other than that beautiful piece!
Thank you!
I want to do it in 3D!
How can we buy this fan ?
I wonder if you sell your projects you would make some really good money
now make a 16 inch hehehe
Now we know why fans are made of plastic lol
I don’t even have proper words……
I don’t know how I came up with the idea or even how I convinced myself to take on this project. But I did! And I couldn’t be happier with the end result. This ones gonna stay in the family.
Thanks Carrie!
damn dude you should start an onlyfans
HAAAAA...
@@kornaros96 sorry...dumb joke but I couldn't resist. Great work on the fan!
