  • PART 4. WASDALE HEAD TO BUTTERMERE.
    This episode is fuelled by Podda & Wren coffee.
    Local coffee roasters here in Kendal. They’ve awesome blends and a cafe in the Elephant Yard, Kendal. Definitely pay them a visit if you’re passing through.
    Additionally, they’re runners too. Jonathan Wren has actually raced the Lakeland 100!
    ROUTE DESCRIPTION.
    The fourth leg of the Montane Lakeland 100. The UK's premier ultra marathon around the Lake District. Leaving checkpoint 3 the first challenge is getting over Black Sail Pass at 570m.
    You then descend into the stunning Ennerdale valley and run past Black Sail YHA at 285m before making the second ascent of the leg up to Scarth Gap Pass at 450m.
    Then it's a technical descent down a very rough rocky path into the Buttermere valley before the final push along the edge of Buttermere lake and into Buttermere village.

    Ahh Ennerdale, my favourite Lakeland valley since spending holidays on a farm there and many happy hours climbing both sides of the valley. That probably has to rate as my personal favourite section, Wasdale, Ennerdale & Buttermere all in one run, it truly doesn’t get much better than that 😊👍

    Loving the videos John, thank you!
    Finding them very helpful, remembering the routes I’ve already recced and seeing the ones I haven’t.
    Great music, laughing and smiling while watching! The filthy cake looked awesome!
    Keep on doing dude 💪

    I don't just like these videos, I bloody love them 😁
    This leg has some contrast in the going, some rough stuff over the passes and then good, runnable trails round Buttermere. Like you, I had built these up in my head, but once you get in your rhythm, it's actually ok. I remember an incredibly dark night over Black Sail pass and a sea of headtorches stretched ahead and behind, pure magic. Another brilliant video, thank you 😊

    These are great! I’m not going to get to the lakes much for recces so these are proving really useful and definitely given me an idea which sections I want to recce and where best to park!

    Great one John. I’ve always loved Buttermere and Ennerdale since I first went there at 5, so I’ve been waiting with anticipation for the vid since the cheeky CZcams short last week. Also I think that ascending the ‘High Level Route’ and ‘Shamrock Traverse’ up the face of Pillar would make a great video as you can get extremely close to Pillar Rock while still staying relatively safe (Wainwright thought it was “the finest way up the mountain”).

      @lakelandtrailrunner  Před rokem +1

      Yup that’s it Shamrock Traverse.. just waiting for a good day which coincides with a day off work then I’ll be heading up there 🤘🏻

    Excellent, quality production again. Fair play for running the passes, I certainly power walked them when I did the Lakeland 4 Passes in 2021. The Shamrock traverse is a great route, I highly recommend it. Thanks again.
