Inline 6's and boxer 6's both cancel out secundairy forces hence why they are both balanced. The thing an inline 6 has going for it is the simple design compared to a boxer, but a boxer engine has the low center of gravity not only suited for rally, but for any type of racing. It has handling benefits
That is a VQ37. Many say they don’t like the sound, but it’s usually because they heard a modified exhaust. This is an Armytrix exhaust, and it definitely shows how good they can sound if done properly

@@PogoDigitalism I see, every piston and conrad move at the same rate as the crankshaft, just everyone on its own phase. Inlet and compression - 1 revolution. Ignition and outlet - another one revolution. Every piston performing 4 strokes (phased from each other) as the crankshaft's revolving, So, yes, these RPMs are per every piston.
Don't forget that exhaust makes a big difference depending on the headers if the cylinder are apart from each other so like for example a i6 usually goes to 1 exhaust pipe and some v6 engine do the same via x pipes and stuff but usually it's separated so like 2x 3 cylinder idk about h6

Third, as they don't share same pin, they have individual pins, so, they create a rocking couple (minimal, but real), that's why they aren't balanced. And of course, they use a counterbalance shaft. The H6 is actually the closest sound to a V12 because of the offset placement of the headers. It's almost as if you installed UEL on a 4cyl (subie rumble) but now imagine that on a 6cyl and now you get the "baby12" sound. UEL on 6cyl is extremely rare... Most of the time it is fabricated. However since the H6 is already offset, it naturally has a UEL.
I think on a FWD V-6 it is also naturally UEL, since the front cylinders' exhaust needs to wrap all the way around the bottom of the engine to join up with the rear bank's exhaust. I seem to remember a 3.5 V-6 Altima lacks the annoying Wookiee wail of a 350Z or G35, in favor of a more throaty, gutsy sound (could be called a sort of burble I guess). My 3.0 Solara was similar. It seems logical to me but I'm no expert 🤷🏻♂️

Conrod + piston material and design, flywheel mass, size of intake and exhaust all have an effect on how aggressively an engine can rev. Making an engine super revvy will surely compromise the low rpm performance and stability though. A well balanced configuration will need less moving mass in general though.
For anyone thinking you need a Prosche for that Flat6 sound...you dont. The subaru Legacy comes with a flat 6 available that sounds beautiful. Acutally a couple different ones. 3L and 3,3L

I'm sure if that engine were used in a car like the STI, the community would have found an extra hundred hp from that thing soon enough. Or maybe just something softer like a Legacy GT. A six is smoother, more suited to a more luxurious car anyway. But give it a stick like a proper LGT! I'll keep it at 256 hp, no problem.
Bingo. Exhaust-wise, each cylinder is really just operating as a single cylinder - it's at the exhaust level where the sound signature is created. Firing order is crucial to that, as well as how all the exhaust runners eventually connect to the final single or dual pipe (their various relative lengths leading up to final convergence).
The sound is more about the exhaust and piston, connecting rod, and crackshaft geometry than how the engine is laid out. Also the exhaust configuration. Unequal length exhaust manifold and or headers will sound different than equal length.

A lot of the dynamics of an engines sound come from whether or not it has a flat plane crankshaft or a cross plane crankshaft. Each one also requires different lobe spacing on the camshafts, which translates to different sounds during acceleration
I think that (for sound purposes) that just informs the firing order. Apart from firing order, the exhaust layout is the last thing that affects the exhaust signature. I think?

I have an inline six in my BMW 430D (with a stage one modification ~320bhp), it does not sound anything like that. The sound from the engine however, is heaven on earth... You can hear the horses galloping in from the distance.
in theory: if u grab a 6 cyl engine and just assemble it any other 6cyl format - every moving parts will be the same exact, of course just the cranckshaft not, but crankpins distance from the cranckshaft centre yes + the same intake/exhaust port dimensions, and then if the exhaust header's piping diameter and length will be the same on the same cylinder in firing sequence of any engine format, then the base sound would be the same exact, then just the other pipes dimensions and type makes some difference, but the base sound would be the same anyways

Reciprocating and rotating mass. Inertia. Lightweight components can accelerate with less force
