Stickier tyres require more brake force to overcome. Stickier tyres are my first upgrade after tint. My 1970 1000kg Torana with 215/50 13s stopped first stop better than anything from medium speeds. Four corners would be enough to cause constant lockups and stops from speed were scary with all the tramlining. I'd rather have extra redundancy and I hate the look of small brakes in big rims.

Next time, rent a performance model 3. Spend fifteen minutes going through the menus line by line and set up the car as you like it… turn off all the noises. That beep is not the car it’s more likely one of the other electronics in your car. Familiarise yourself with the menu.

I think the point is that if you’ve got say a Porsche 911 turbo s which is known for having the best stopping distance in the motor industry, it is very hard for a braking system to overcome the force of the top end tires which are used, and they modulate the brake pressure very well and the ABS reacts very quickly so to just say it is all about the tyres is also just as bad as saying it is all about how big the disc or calipers are. Manufacturers like brembo have got this nailed down like a fine art and know there are lots of different factors at play.

Great video! I always wondered why SUVs seemingly have such tiny discs! Should be obvious once you think about aeroplanes, the A380 has a maximum takeoff weight of 575 tonnes and can stop from 200 odd mph to zero in less than 2km. That's on the order of 100,000hp of braking power. The brake rotors and stators in its bogeys are not massive, instead, they have 16 wheels capable of braking, and each has 5 rotors. Having said that, aircraft ARE usually torque-limited in the dry, and only become slip-limited in the wet, where they use ABS (in fact, the aerospace engineers invented the system).

This is what happens when the tech geeks that used to sit in the cellar all day and night, doing who knows what, are loosed on the streets, get jobs (finally) and start messing up everyone's life by "teching" everything and ruining life for everyone. These geeks have always been dangerous because they have zero idea what it means to LIVE life, not just exist and be endlessly "entertained" (something that all kids MUST be these days, according to the "experts", whoever they are) and create things that mostly don't need inventing. It was borrowed from a family member and I didn't want to bring it back. Decades back, there was a song called, "In The Year 2525". Also a song, "Kids Of The Baby Boom". You MUST listen CLOSELY to both of those songs. Even way back then, some people already knew what was coming. Both of these songs answer a lot of questions and observations we now have. Decades back, machines were the slaves. Now we are. My current vehicle is 23 years old and has 200,600 miles on it. I'm doing everything I can to keep it running, even going as far as to not drive it. The day I have to buy a newer model of something, I'm going to cancel all my doctors appointments and stop taking all my pills, for good. Then I'm going to pig-out on chocolate. I'm going out with a smile...and a huge buzz!

I have an Atlas VR6 with a wookie pipe. I sometimes drive in manual mode just to hear the high revs. It ain't no R32 but still sounds real nice.

I race a 2000 celica in VARA with totally stock brakes but Hawk+pads and 600 fluid and yet it has race tires wider than stock at 225 and I can still lock the wheels up in braking. I had to add air ducting to dissipate heat but thats it.
