With your skills honestly I'd love to see a restoration series where, through the magic of 3D printing and DIY crafting, you bring the game back to life. Replace the walls with XPS foam structures and 3D print some awesome alternative models to make the game at least playable.
Think it'd be a cool idea.

To infodump a bit: as some people already pointed out, this game was originally developed by a German company (Schmidt Spiele). They had the TTRPG "Das Schwarze Auge" or short DSA, which is still alive and popular/infamous in Germany. So the German title of that boardgame was "Das Schwarze Auge". The development seemed to be quite the shitshow. Schmidt Spiele had the TTRPG which made good money and saw the success of Heroquest. So they went to one of the writers for DSA and asked him to write a German Heroquest. While he was working on it they changed their mind quite a bit, like wanting to include a soundchip which then was to expensive. The presentation of the writers concepts rarely went on for longer than 2 minutes while Schmidt Spiele Always had some parts they wanted to change. At some point the company hired some "British Pros" to work on the game. The original writer was flewn to London to participate in a 2 hour meeting of which 1,5 hours were about the box size. After that Schmidt Spiele decided, that the Brits would finish the game, also it would not play in the universe of DSA, so the only thing it still had in common was the logo and name. The pictured manticore for example was not even existent in the world at that time. Fortunately the original writer was paid handsomely. He was just asked how much he wanted, said the most ludicrous number that came to mind, the Schmidt Spiele exec sighed in relief and paid him. Thanks to the money the writer could work on writing a massive campaign for DSA even 10 years after. (DSA is kind of known for these longspanning campaigns and metaplots). Source: de.wiki-aventurica.de/wiki/Die_Burg_des_Schreckens
Apparently the game was a bit of a gateway for a good number of people, but basically everyone I talked to, who played it said it was nearly unplayable in the vanilla state and one had to use house rules and phantasy quite a bit. My brother had one as well. He gave it to me, in all its incomplete glory, when I started Warhammer as a child 24 years ago along with Heroquest and Space Crusade. I still want to paint and use the main temple for nostalgia reasons.

Thank you for the interesting info. I still have the Greek version in almost mint condition ( I think one of the weapons is missing). In Greece it was marketed as Dragon Game System. We already had HeroQuest with my brother which was basically super expensive for a kids board game at the time. This was even more expensive and the contents were super impressive, but soon we realised how lame the gameplay was. I’m not sure but is this the first time counter bases were ever used? I remember lamenting the fact that HeroQuest didn’t had those cool counter bases.

I can't describe how thrilled I was to see this thumbnail pop up. I was also introduced to this style of game by Dark World when I found it at a neighborhood yard sale in the mid 90's. And like you, I spent most of my time with the game assembling and playing with it without any consideration for the actual rules. Fast forward to about 4 years ago when I saw a complete and near pristine copy on eBay and I had to pull the trigger. Kudos to you for waiting to find a copy in the wild, even if it is missing a few pieces.

This video is a deep dive into memory lane....
My first board game was a hand crafted Monopoly. I don't remember who smuggled this through the iron curtain, but somehow we got our hands on it and we played it countless hours with I don't know how many people over the years.
Everything was self made. The money, the cards, the board ... we used random red and green stuff for the houses and hotels. There were no shops to buy anything, but we made it work. And we valued it, this stuff lasted for years. I wonder where it is now, if it still lurks in the shadows.
Before that there was a whole castle we played with, made of paper. I was maybe 9 or 10 or so, and it was magnificent and magical. A whole castle, with a working drawbridge and everything the fairytales describe. Nothing but painted paper, maybe 70 by 90 cm, a work of love. I think the father of my childhood friend made it.
We never broke a window, bent an awning, ripped one of the strings or spilled a nonexistent softdrink. We loved this thing. It was world of it's own. Condensed - like the tiny world we all lived in. Caged like birds unable to fly.
    Children destroy anything? Not true.
It's the intention that creates the world. Juan Matus aka Don Juan
What you fear the most will come true. Unknown
What if ... children know what you expect from them? What if they sense your fears and act accordingly because they are tied to your emotions? What if ... children are the mirror of humanity?
I have to thank you for reminding me how satisfying it was to craft things, to make do with what you have. Our spirit behind the curtain was the same you show on youtube in this time.
Did you know that east germany was a giant larp, playing indians?
I will never be pc, I know they are the first nations, but how do you say: Don't walk in front of me, for I will not follow. Don't walk behind me, for I will not lead. Walk beside me, so we can be as one.
We are of the same blood, you and I. My brother First nation? Sounds awkward.
    We all bleed red.
And may I boast a little bit? We had the best indian actor on screen before the 90s. Forget hollywood. If you want to watch a real indian, watch the old DEFA-movies. Gojko Mitic was our "Winnetou", and he was gorgeous. Of course he was no German, he was from Serbia. The spirit (definitely not the german, the universal spirit, we are still talking about red skin .... why? They don't have problems with sunburns. Who else could have been in the americas with red skin?) is more or less the same. He was my first crush, when I was 10 or so. 😂
They say blood is thicker than water. Pour blood into water and just watch .... it dissolve. 🤫 Good riddance.

Loved the video (and loved the ad). I wasn't sure what Dark World was (figured it was some Hero Quest like thing) but was interested in seeing why it was important enough for a video. When I saw the back of the box I realized I had recently read about it because I had seen a Chaotic-themed board game at a shop and it was basically a reskin of Dark World. And then you showing off the minis made me realize that this game is part of a series and that I had one of the games growing up (Dark World: Village of Fear).
And then you pulled out Mutant Chronicles at the end, which caught me completely off-guard as it's another game that was in my house growing up. Tons of cool stuff in it and I wish I still had it.
As an aside, I wonder how feasible it would be to scratch-build all the parts you'd need for a Dark World set? Outside of the cards and tokens, I'd imagine making a set of walls and such would turn out pretty cool. I've always thought how nice it'd be to custom-make board game components to supplement/replace pieces.

This game was a childhood favourite of mine too. The interactivity and moving parts were certainly a point of difference from HQ; another childhood favourite. I see they lost the flip top treasure chests from your box as well. The swappable weapons and secret doors and wand were all very cute additions. Game play was a bit top heavy with the monsters barely standing a chance. But I guess all these games were designed for the heroes to win. Hero Quest, Darkworld and Battle Masters were all great childhood games until Warhammer took over. Wish I had kept them to play with my boys… Hopefully someone out there found them at the thrift store and put them to good use. Thanks for the memories! Would love to see more videos like this one.

    Never seen that game.
Mutant Chronicles tho? Played that in my early 20s (some 10+ years after the game came out) and it was realy fun.
You play a small campaign, and alternativ who plays the villain.
You get to draw cards with special powers to suprise the players. Like spawning in monsters etc.
I remeber so clearly the players rushing for the exit... and then I played a card that allowed me to turn a map-tile around. So suddenly they were alot further back and just next to my monsters 😅
It got a swanky new edition from kickstarter that was delivered like a year ago. Had I more time I would have loved to play that

Great video. Congrats on the find! Warhammer Quest was my first dungeon crawler board game.
Mutant Chronicles was a fun board game. I never played the RPG. They made a bad movie based on the franchise, which I used to own a copy of. Ron Perlman was in it.

Isnt it nice that a german product gets rebranded and renamed in canada.
You can see they changed to logo to hide the dark eye.
Its originally made by Schmidt Spiele to support the RPG "the dark eye" (Das Schwarze Auge).
It was my entry to reading novels to that game system along my first RPG.

I never played dark world or heroscape when i was a kid. Instead my brother and i played dragon strike. Never could stop playing that game or watching it's introduction video.
Update: Don't go looking for your childhood board game. The cost to buy one will make you cry 😭

WTF! For years I have been trying to remember the name of this board game. I had it when I was really young and thought back then that the models would look amazing painted. I eventually lost most of them or something and the game became a distant memory. Literally. Until a couple nights ago when I finally came across some of the game on ebay. And now all of a sudden you make a video about the same game.... That Manticore! awe MAN! I got this game at the same time I was learning about monster mythology and all the different beasts and crap like the gryphon, minotaur, gobilns, orks, giants and the MANTICORE.... I swear coincidences have me feeling like I'm Jim Carrey on the Trueman show...

I had the Mutant Cronicles game. Bought it on clearance at. KayBee toys. At the time, the Mutant Cronicles RPG had just been turned into a proper tabletop miniatures game called Warzone. I used the undead legionaires, Necromutants, Centurians, and other Dark Legion baddies to build a Dark Legion Army under Algeroth. Played Warzone through the first two editions of the game. Sold it all several years ago. Sorta wish I had it back.

I still have both of those games somewhere in my basement from when I got them as a teenager. I also painted the miniatures like trash, hey, it was the 90's and I was just starting trying to paint minis. Never played Dark World as intended, but used the minis for D&D. Mutant Chronicles was actually a lot of fun to play. The lore of Mutant Chronicles is great also.

That was a really cool video.
I only know this game from the internet - I don't know if it came out in Australia at all, but if it did, definitely overshadowed by Heroquest and Space Crusade, and I've never seen it in the flesh.
But I absolutely understood your childish glee (and partial disappointment) when going through the box, as I had the same feelings maybe 2-3 years ago when my younger cousin returned my copy of the original Heroquest that I loaned him 15+ years earlier. I thought it lost, didn't remember loaning it to him, and it was so fun going through it all again.
It had lost a few pieces, and had a few broken and converted models (no blame here, like I said, I assumed I'd lost it all, so having 90% of it back was awesome).
I did then chase down the missing pieces, mostly. It is missing 1 mummy, but the prices they go for individually is kind of insane, so I'm happy to be close enough.
It also had some of my earliest paint jobs, and like your box, was done with some of my dad's model car testors/humbrol/Tamiya enamel paints - but it was also fun to strip them back and paint them up properly.
The box lid is is bad shape, but I never considered repairing it... I really should.
Anyway, I hope you do try source the missing pieces, and maybe even scratch build those walls on foam core or something. I'm sure the designs will be available online - if it's anything like Heroquest, there'll be plenty of other "old" hobbyists keen to preserve the nostalgia.
There are probably even STLs for the minis if you don't want to buy them, or just want to proxy while you hunt.

I remember this game! My friend had it when we were teenagers, and we were really excited to play it, but the instructions were so unclear (we had a translated version, so it that might be the reason) that we couldn't figure out how it was meant to be played, and we were so frustrated because of that, that we wrote an angry letter to the company (It was half a joke but we were genuinely upset about it).

I was gifted this by some friends for my birthday. I thought it was neat and intended to incorporate the pieces into an adventure but just never found the right adventure to use it with. I should probably homebrew something, but just never got around to it.

I picked up my Darkworld at a flea market in the late 1990s for under 10 US dollars. Played it a few times then it got tossed into a storage unit for over 20 years. The box is all chewed up but it looks mostly intact. Also have Axis & Allies and Buck Roger’s.
