Oooh ooh here’s an idea. If you have a local game store, you could organize a “terrain trade” day and go with a box and make sure you come home with less than you went with. Someone gets a really good deal, you may get something you need and haven’t had time to build, and you’ve freed up space. You also know that those other people are going to give some ongoing love to what you built!!!
My local GW used to do that. Then they realised it didn't help them so stopped anyone from bringing in terrain at all.

GW stores aren’t local game stores. They are corporate conglomerate store fronts.
@@photonfartsqueeze6694 For the longest time that was the only "local" gaming store in my area, well, bar an hour-plus drive. As long as you were a regular they didn't mind other company's stuff being used or painted at their paint bar. Then again, GW today is not the same.

How you explained why you’d rather give some of your terrain away than to sell it was really honest and fair. You are a kind person by heart and your love for the hobby spreads in the same way. Sharing is always better than profit.

The idea of converting old terrain into newer, more versatile terrain is actually something I've done just recently. I really really hated how a project was coming along, it just didn't work, so I ripped it apart and also turned it into a piece of Idols of Torment terrain. was a great way to salvage an otherwise abandoned project.
When I gave a batch of old terrain away I was immediately made aware how many people there are around me that really want some. It had lots of offers to buy it which wasnt what I wanted to do. Finally found a nice family that plays dnd together to gift it to.

Honestly, the whole reason I started crafting for the hobby (even though I had been it and being a GM since 2nd ed) was your dollar store house video. Your old cheap stuff is still some of my favorite things to see on your channel.
I live in San Marcos Sierras, a little argentinian town inside the country. Months ago, went back to Buenos Aires capitol city for some health troubles and for making some money because the economy actually is on a bad situation, even more in a little town. That time, I started making some terrain to play Frostgrave, Brutality and DnD with my friends. Your videos were very helpful to me. Time ago, I displayed the works that I made in an local RPG WhatsApp group, and the people started ordering me some sets. I actually donated some Verrotwood terrain to a local game store. I've made way too much for my photography so I decided to get rid of some of the stuff that never sees play on the table.
"Shelving space is a finite resource." - Truer words have never been said.
I'm sure a ton of LGS need more terrain. Store terrain gets used a LOT so it's perfect that it's not your best stuff. Especially newer stores would probably be super grateful too!

Virtually everything I make is created for my games club. I'm lucky that we have decent storage at school. I can always use what we have if needed. The hardest part there though is the moment terrain goes into club circulation it starts getting brutalized. I need to let the pieces go the moment they go to club.
Now, old terrain, or terrain we are upgrading with newer versions, is what we use as "Start-up" boxes for new school games clubs that are starting up. We try to help by giving them a box or two and a couple of our old MDF terrain boards. It's a great way for us to help the community and keep a lid on our storage (pun intended). So far we have have helped found 7 new clubs in this way with nearly all being run by teachers who started as students in our club. I love doing that! The next generation keeps it going.

Love people that give away their builds due to one reason or another. I will always make room for them due to the vast amount of storage choices available today. The more the merrier, as you can never have too much terrain as long as you can accommodate it.
As a builder of 1/12 scale fantasy ruins dioramas I completely understand your pain. I've had to part with my most iconic pieces but they all went to good homes at least which I agree is the most important thing to me more so than what I make from them.

I've started making terrain because of this channel and let me say, It has left me without a wardrobe...first, the terrain lived in a shoe cabinet but then as there was more and more and MORE, I had to start thinking about storage ...and well ...the wardrobe has all those nice shelves and everything...so I moved into the shoe cabinet and when I open my wardrobe it is like going to Narnia
Congratulations on getting over the discardia hurdle and finding the joy of giving it away! I've had a lot of pleasure passing stuff along to my friendly local game shop to use at their play tables, use as prizes, or give to staff or customers.
I get your desire for the smooth, black, unlabeled bin zone. My approach to that same conundrum is not Ikea bins, but Ikea Besta "wardrobe" cabinets + Kuggis trays. The trays allow me to arrange pieces or minis densely but not stacked on top of each other, and even to carry a tray to my build table. The cabinets have dense shelving to give the trays an inch or two above the tallest pieces, but not more, so each cabinet holds many trays, Because the cabinets have doors, I have a sleek, monochrome wall of storage which fades into the background in my room, but as soon as I open it up all my collection is visible and easily accessible.
Yesssss! Taking pieces previously built and repurposing them into somthing new it the best way I found to help with a little bit of storage, add to the collection AND avoid wasting/throwing stuff away! Also very much fun to take a piece you made when you were starting out and spruce it up/repurpose it with your current knowledge/skills!

Great stuff! A LFG opened up close to me not too long ago and as I upgrade terrain and builds I give them my first attempts so they can build their in-store collection and they are super grateful and it’s awesome to walk in there and seeing random folks playing on stuff I built.

For anyone living in the Nordics / EU, the SmartStore transparent bins are great for a ll sorts of storage. Multiple sizes, stacking, and dividers are a thing too.

That drum tower brings back memories! A version of that was the first thing this channel inspired me to build. Not long after that I bought a Proxxon hot wire cutter. I'd always wanted to make terrain but it was seeing the potential of XPS foam that really sold me on it. Haven't looked back!
Your videos were great inspiration when I first got into the hobby 5 years ago. Fast forward to today and I have a collection of 5000+ minis, plus I 3D print and craft terrain. Storing stuff is a constant struggle. My home hosts multiple games every month so stuff is always being used, but not every thing. I have given some stuff away to a local school D&D club and after watching this maybe I need to reach out and see if they could use anything else. I have some stuff that has been collecting dust for years that could be used to help someone else's game. Once again, thanks for the inspiration 😊
Lots of small wargaming cons have a flea market. Good for picking up everything from bits to full armies.
Also, for bins, I use Sterilite clear bins. I got mine thru Walmart in the bulk packages, which really didn't cost as bad as it would have individually. Really good, easy to see what's in them. For all the little bits I just got a batch plastic parts organizers (like you see for hardware and jewelry), and they've been a life saver for all the individual furniture bits I have.
I like using the term "Parting with" instead of "getting rid of" This is because the latter feels more negative and less appreciative of items that I feel I no longer want or need.
Whereas the former feels more positive and more appreciative of those items because I hope that their new owners appreciate them and give them a good home.
Giving stuff away to budding D&D players always feels really good. You know it's going to be used and may inspire them to create their own terrain and will likely encourage them to play more. I haven't given away any terrain, but I've given a few kiddos their first dice set and the response is always fantastic :)
Dont have nearly enough terrain for that (though I did build some extras when trying out ideas and methods as a gift), but as far as miniatures go, I used my extras to show some local art friends how to paint minis and some chose to keep theirs. Also a good thing :)

I know the problem. A friend and I do every summer building workshops for older children and young adults (plus mostly fathers for younger ones), we build about 4 24x24" taples over 5 weeks. We use to give them away to hobby shop, but after 4 years no shop what´s any anymore. So selling/giving them away for a good course is the best way.
A label maker is your friend for the black containers. I use clear containers but still like to put a label on the outside so I don’t need to pull it and check the wrong one because things are too cluttered inside.
I know a game store or two that like to host games - and have indicated that they are VERY open to getting terrain for their game nights so that DMs and others have resources on hand :)
When I moved to a new city and had to get rid of my old warhammer stuff, I ended up donating it all to a local gaming store, made me feel good knowing my old terrain builds and stuff got a good home and are in use.

If you really like black bins, a possible solution is to mark them for their contents. While simple text labels are obvious, you might not like the way the labeled bins look on the shelf. You can go for more artistic or less obtrusive labeling though. My father would put a picture of a representative item on the outside of containers. I used to mark my portable external hard drives with a single letter or even a color that I'd associated with the contents.
This was actually my plan all along….its just never happened yet 😄

I am working on my own 3D printable projects and plan to give the pieces to local gaming groups. It came from an idea/dream I had several years ago to start a makers space (closest one is over 80 minutes away and you have to live in the county) to get the next gen into S.T.E.A.M. by showing off the tech and what can be done.
Holy cow, I remember the birthday post for that kid. I had no idea that you gave him a care package! That's such a solid thing to do! Hats off!

I'm encountering the problem with what to do with all of my Warhammer army models right now. It's a different issue than terrain and larger pieces, but my plan is to use various size of "Really Useful Boxes" and store things there. All of my model bases have magnets, so I secure a pice of metal to the bottom of the boxes so that things are very secure. I of course need to consider selling things I don't regularly play.

for me i just finished the bascment this is where all my over flow goes now and big metials it took a year to get it done i had to rebuild part of a field stone foundation repoint most of the stone and water proofed the outside as well as run drain tile in side sump pump , cleaned up all electrical and plumping installed air exchanger and dehimiafier a lot of work but it needed to be done anyways
Seeing people use the stuff I made is such a hobby boost. I gave a DM friend a box of random scatter (particularly unusual things) and it’s had such a positive effect on his encounter designs. It’s cool to see things I made benefit other people’s games.

Storage is always an issue. Especially when you're limited to one space for all your geeky pursuits. Since I lost my office to my daughter (converted it to her nursery, now her bedroom, when she was born), I've converted the garage to my office/studio/workshop. Two walls are workbench and storage, one wall is bulk storage shelves, and one wall is split between 3d printers, shelves for terrain storage, and my office desk. In Texas the whole thing had to be insulated and air conditioned. The space is shared with my side business making tabletop accessories, the stock for which is now claiming a lot of the space originally intended for terrain.
Over time this space has also become a second living room with the addition of a couch, TV, and a custom work/gaming table. Under the table is storage for Harbor Freight part boxes converted to miniatures storage. And after the conversion I now have dozens of the yellow parts bins that will, someday, become the City of Freight Harbor, a giant terrain build using them as the foundations for dystopian starport/hive city buildings. I'm trying to develop, like many others, a tile system for terrain for easy stacking or making a rack to house them.
On top of all that, I'm also the chairman for Chupacabracon, a non-profit gaming convention in Central Texas that is also a fund raiser for Extra-Life. Which is one of the main points of this post. If you're still looking to re-home terrain, let me know. Since we are growing to a 1000 person event, this year, and adding miniature wargaming to our events, we are in desperate need of terrain to fill upwards of 20 tables for Warhammer, 40K, OPR, Star Wars Legion, and any other game people may want to run or play. We can help with shipping costs to get them to Texas and maybe, just maybe, find some of your fans who may be travelling this way between now and mid-May.

Jeremy! Love all of your videos. I was wondering if you have any techniques for making Black Marble terrain tiles. I've looked through a lot of videos on CZcams but I got a feeling you have some simpler or better techniques for creating Black Marble, and I prefer your methods anyways.. I'm working with regular craft paints, pink Foamular foam, and brushes. I do not have an air brush. Any guides or tips?

To cope with a serious lack of terrain storage space I’ve been making all my recent stuff fit inside other pieces. The little building goes inside the medium building and that goes inside the big building😅. Admittedly it makes everything boxy (literally!) but I’m trying to add pipes and the like to the sides to add detail, and hope that scatter terrain can help to break it up a bit.
These ideas are awesome and so generous for the donations.

I love to see this kind of video! I've often wondered why CZcams makers don't get together and hold a charity auction of their older stuff. There are so many good websites for holding that kind of thing; they coordinate all the bidding and payment and all the maker has to do is box things up and send them off. Now maybe that's a sticking point, but I've seen this a lot among writers and they'll auction off whole sets of books.
Anyway, it's a question I have about a lot of makers/crafters/sewists who churn out something every week or so. Thanks for answering it.

Don't forget to check in with your local public library -- often they have staff and librarians who are gamers who are looking for materials to help support local gaming groups who use the library. They can create a collection of your builds and let people sign them out for in-library games.

Best label for your bins. I'm not a great label / organizer myself. That task is left to my lovely wife. However, I think for you the best, easiest, and most efficient labels is ..
1. Take a photo of each bin. Literally, just use your camera phone and take a shot of what's inside the bin.
2. Print out each photo, one per bin.
3. Use clear packing tape to tape each photo to the front of the corresponding bin.
Now, at a glance , you will know what's inside each bin. I find this much better than text labels, because there will usually be a dozen or more various items in each associated box, and rather than trying to find a suitable name that may or may not properly identify every item in the bin, because I end up opening and closing each drawer anyway to try to find what I'm looking for, now I just glance at the pictures along the front and right away I can find what I'm looking for.
This also helps because sometimes I'm not certain what I'm looking for, but just scrolling across the pictures, I can find inspiration for what I want to do.

I just recently gave a couple tile sets to a guy I met at work who just got into pathfinder and played in a one shot I ran. He loved the set so I told him to take it for his games because I had started a new set and needed motivation to finish it lol

Clear containers are definitely the way to go! .99 cent stores and Walmart are my go to for those, but you can get them just about any where. Love your stuff bud and you have inspired me more than a few times to build something you have created in my own style or for my own games. Thanks for you and the things you offer us here!

When you're looking at getting rid of some items, you should consider reaching out to high schools in Winnipeg... At my daughter's school (Grant Park), there are no less than 4 D&D clubs.
I don’t build gaming stuff- my eyes won’t let me build much of anything theses days.
Back when I built plastic models they would stack up after a while and I too was running out of room. One day at the model store the owner was talking about kitbashing with some customers and I mentioned that I had used old builds for parts and so forth. That snowballed into a sort of swap meet Saturday event weekly where we’d bring in builds we didn’t want to keep and basically put them on a table and take turns picking what we wanted. I cleared a lot of space that way, and while “good home” has a different meaning here, it was way better than putting them in the trash.
Damn. That tour of the shelves reminded me just how many of these videos I have watched over the years!

Those shelves look so damn neat. Hours of entertaining projects. I loved the spooky music and black modpodge days. Air brushes are cool and stuff but its always more fun when things are archaic. The chapel and that damn little fountain still are some of the best due to how simple and involved they were.

Giving away builds to a kid, what a King!
It's a shame seeing the underwater terrain piece ripped apart. But at the same time, it's necessary. Unless you play Age of Sigmar and have an Idoneth Deepkin army, or run an all-underwater D&D campaign, most folks don't need dedicated aquatic terrain of this kind.
Plus, I like the idea that the Idols of Torment terrain piece it became represents the blasted memory of that original flooded structure. That with the collapse of Heaven and Hell, ruins once vibrant with aquatic life now stand amid the wastes, surrounded by other relics of older, better ages. In that way, it's a very meta piece of scenery.
You know, one thing that you could do is if you have a good gamestore nearby with open tables, you could give them to the stores stockpile.
One store that used to be near me (unfortunately, the owner retired) used to have a program where you could donate terrain or minis...or even repaint store minis...for store credit which could be used for more paint, tools, books, or minis...
I would love terrain signed by you to use in my D&D game on Wednesday nights. Even the crappy stuff.
Do remember that the "older crappier looking ones" were the nicest and the best ones until you made even nicer ones.
It's nice to give away the stuff you don't want to keep anymore - I tend to do the same. I always tell them to do the same when they don't want to keep them anymore. It happened to me a few times that I heard from some friend, who heard from some other friend, that my old stuff ended up at a new place again. That makes me happy 😁
Pro tip for marking those black bins: I use a chalk marker to write on them what is in there, wipes off easily with a wet cloth to reuse the bins for something else.
P.s: this works with white bins to, they also sell black chalk markers
The most significant quality of life improvement for me was putting glass doors on my IKEA Billy shelves. No more dusting a thousand miniatures.
I usually just give mine away to people who want it. Recently gave away 2 start-collecting boxes of seraphon to a friend for instance

The Vampire diorama is still my favorite, idk why, it’s just a classic.
The spiral staircase one? That video inspired me to make a tiered dias, with a spiral staircase going down through the floor and up. The idea was to use it as a sort of quick save in a dungeon crawl game. Fight through a level, then choose to go down to another floor, or up to town to rest and sell loot. Still haven't used it yet, but it's ready when I need it.
