      @@brutalcities hi there, having seen your stuff for the first time, i gotta say this si amazing stuff an dI am totally fed up with the usual "grim dark" asthetics. it should be entirely possibly to "gothify" lots of these building on demand.
      considering most stuff is sold out, will you consider selling the building files at some point?
      having mdf cutters is getting more popular and it would also solve the difficult shipping from Australia to EUR for example!

    Entertaining script and gorgeous vid as always Alex! I am going to have to beg to send you one more kit in the future because you mentioned you regretted not doing pink pastel; I think you will really like the work of Architectural photographer Veronika Dudka - she edits a bunch of her photos to make either the sky or the brutalist subjects pastel pink and it’s the best look. I’ll have to buy a print someday!
    The dot filter is soemthing new to me, I look forward to try it!
    One more thing you could add (which will take all of 5 mins and can be done anytime you have a min- if you do a really really heavy oil wash on the flat surfaces AFTER you varnish, the organic pooling effect as the oil and solvents glide over the varnish creates the best natural weathering effects and would suit the tropical vibe (moss/water pooling stains etc)
    Thanks again for sharing this great project!
    And P.S. almost all products are out of stock now, but I will have a limited run soon and email subscribers when they are back in stock. Still have to work out what Brutal Cities will look like but I’m a little bit over working by myself so I’ll find another job and do this on the side. Maybe a company in the US/EU/UK can make and ship the kits for me, who knows!

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  Před 25 dny +4

      Thanks Ryan! And yes, pink would have been awesome. I was as well thinking at first to do one or two sides of the buildings in different colours. That plan kind of died when the priming escalated. But that’s a cool plan for the future. It might look quite like some of those photos.

I can imagine the rabbithole of possibity sparking layers of ideas, furishing the interiors, adding a couple of vehicles, some holoscreens, neon signs, some scatter terrain like bags of refuse, a datahub, discarded bot, comm kiosk, bus stop shelter, and a handful of concrete planters, perhaps hot pink bins here and there .. conjours up a lot of ideas for add ons. You've said something that made me realize, that there is no objectively "done" project. It is always "I consider it done" and that is the beauty of the hobby - even the finish is up to us! We can consider something done only half way in, and it is done for us, no questions asked (who would ask anyway). But there are projects, that are always live, and we add to them, cause we feel like it. The freedom!

    That "Dot Filtering" technique made me so excited. The effect that we use in the illustrative scene is called a "Hue Shift", and using them subtly tells the brain that there is more visual interest in the piece than a simple gradient can achieve alone! We see those as 'more realistic' because in skin, in materials, in anything that exists in the world, there is so much light bouncing around and off of ambient environments that the actual hue of any part of a surface can change bit from bit.
    This is an amazing way to get those hue shifts really quickly. The entire village looks awesome! This is a lovely base for anything else you want to do with the board, ad it should be easier to do things with it from this point onward!

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  Před 23 dny

      Yeah, I adore Dot Filtering. It does just what you describe. I’ve used it in the past on vehicles as well and it’s great. Especially for the hue shifts you describe. There is not a distinct visual effect, just a sense of realism.

    Who else but Alex would include the authentic hobby journey through a bad priming session that blights the whole experience and fights you all the way. I love you for it m8, even I would have gone the matt varnish route and likely drawn a discreet veil over my mistake.
    But then who among us hasn't had a rattlecan priming disaster? It's right up there with agrax going absolutely everywhere, or slicing your digit to the bone cutting off a sprue nubbin when you knew you should go get the clippers but instead sacrificed several ounces of blood to the god of not getting up off the chair.
    Gives my wife a laugh at least - not the agrax! she has absolutely no sense of humour about that stuff any more and sensibly believes I've sensibly binned the last pot....

    I do really love those pastel shades. It shows there's shades other than grey or khaki that can also work for wargames terrain. I sometimes find that hydrophobic effect happening with "normal" primers - it is very upsetting and would be worse on larger structures. "Done is better than perfect" via an allegory of the war of the ring is fitting, somehow.

    Wonderful video with lots of tips! I DO have an airbrush, but in my current state it's difficult to use. Oddly, I just discovered the "dry brush" effect you described on my most recent project and did the entire thing with just a cheap makeup brush and unthinned acrylic paint and it looks AMAZING! Exactly how you described it; it looks like it's been airbrushed. I didn't mask anything so there was "overspray", but going back and forth with different colors gave me such an amazing result I almost just want to paint everything this way now!

    Alex, thanks for another satisfying video. The color palette you selected for the city-scape is quite enjoyable, and the applied weathering is phenomenal.
    I appreciate your use of weathering pencils - they were unknown to me (beyond an earlier example when a person used a standard graphite pencil to apply a metallic edging to models where the addition of the tone would be appropriate). I have a phobia of the spirits required for oils - and therefor refrain from either - but the pencils are a welcome revelation.
    One adverse comment, and strictly my opinion: please do not pursue your thought to make these buildings "dual-use" - they are utterly unconvincing as anything other than modern or hyper-modern. Just my 2 cents, delivered in the friendliest manner. 🙂

    I think we could take more inspiration from sci-fi artists outside of the hobby niche. Some of my favorites are Chris Foss, Peter Elson, John Berkey, John Harris, Rob Cunningham, and Ralph McQuarrie. For that matter, we could take more inspiration from artists that don't do sci-fi at all.
