Nations create alliances to defeat the enemy, history accolades the winner , and in this case Nyerere zeroed on Amin by alienating him as evil and hence OAU , UN and everyone around didn’t raise a finger with the exception of Libya whose solders were captured. The legend of Nyerere was not that , but rather he virtually emptied the coffers of his country to the liberation of southern states which were still under minority white rule. The other legacy is he harmonized and unified his country buy fighting tribalism which has caused havoc in the other East and Central African countries... and by extension the whole continent .You want to know how great he was ? is in the respect he is allocated to by his compatriots namely Tanzanians.

      Mark Anthony Vinorkor Wikipedia frames the dispute this way:
      Nyerere endorsed the Pan-Africanist idea of unifying Africa as a single state, although he disagreed with the Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah's view that this could be achieved quickly. Instead, Nyerere stressed the idea of forming regional confederations as short-term steps towards the eventual unification of the continent.[166] Pursuing these ideals, in June 1963 Nyerere met with Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta and Ugandan President Milton Obote in Nairobi, where they agreed to unite their respective countries into a single East African Federation by the end of the year. This, however, never materialised.[167] In December 1963, Nyerere lamented that this failure was the major disappointment of the year.[168] Instead, the East African Community was launched in 1967, to facilitate some cooperation between the three countries.[169] Later, Nyerere saw his inability to establish an East African Federation as the biggest failure of his career.[170]

    This is the shortsightedness that has kept Africa back for centuries. What makes you think African unity at the time was not possible? Nkrumah gave guidelines? Nyerere said in Accra, in 1997, during a lecture on Ghana's 40th independence anniversary that most of them, heads of states, were glad to be going back home, after that 1963 Conference ,still as heads of states. Less than 40 years later and out of power, he realised Nkrumah's ideas as stated then, were feasible, although at the time he thought it was over ambition on Nkrumah's part. So you see, its shortsightedness by people like Nyerere which scuttled plans to unite Africa into a formidable world power. Not many thought a United States of America was feasible; today look at what we have. The Nyereres were s curse to Africa.

    • @AfroMarxist
      @AfroMarxist  Před 4 lety +17

      It was not possible because in the 60s not every country was independent, I would urge you to read "A United States of Africa" by Nyerere. Nyerere was not against unity but he knew it would happen on smaller scales like the East African Federation but even with that it proved difficult as Kenyatta is a greedy man and also Nkrumah himself sabotaged the effort. Nyerere is the only African to unite to sovereign states and was even was ready to give up his presidency and delay independence for the East African Federation, no one worked harder for Africa and African Unification than Nyerere.

      Mark Anthony Vinorkor i think you’re a bitter man , nyerere’s point was, every African leader didn’t want to lose that presidential aura and hence rejected kwame’s argument. For Nyerere his argument was before total African Union one should have a regional one hence his effort to create East Africa federation failed!Note don’t be personal on differences but be personal on vision hence Nyerere’s was but alternative to nkuruma’s....his quest to create East African Union also was sabotaged, there were vested interests that didn’t want that happen , like in many other things.

    Mimi naweza nikasema Nyerere alifanyikiwa kwa kitu ki1 muhimu: Ukabila haupo tena nchini humuo, na wa Tz wameungana. ila kwenye suala za maendeleo ya wa Tz, Uhuru wa Taifa na haki za binadamu, hakuweza kuacha msingi mpoa. Hadharani wa Tz wanaonekana kuwa huru ila ukijaribu kuchunguza jambo hili vizuri,.... hawana amani 100%.
