  • Aslan and I arrive at Garstang and steadily (1mph) make our way over half a mile or so, passed a seemingly endless line of moored boats, to Garstang Marina - and where Aslan is booked to be lifted out the following day, for her bi-annual reblacking, touching up of paintwork and a few other much needed jobs.

      I was having breakfast after taking the dog for his morning 2km run, he runs I ride the motor bike to prevent the dog rustlers getting him, sorry I drift a bit in old age. The exhaust note is only bettered when passing under a bridge, that base not is great.
      Loved seeing the boat names and it remined me of my child hood.
      I asked dad where we were going on the summer holiday, he answered: Ourgate.
      I checked on the map book but couldn't find so asked where it was. 10 yards from the front door was the answer.

    Hello Kevin, nice to cruise the Lancaster with you and Aslan. I never got to the Lancaster, as it was a lorry trip in my cruising days. Something I do notice many years on from my cruising times are the modern take on Pete Seger's 'Little Boxes" which appear to be the norm infill housing development all around the canals in the UK now! I am not a lover of uniformity in any shape or form!

    Kevin, I discovered your Travels by Narrowboat just after I retired in June 2020 on Prime video and have watched every episode. I was a bit disappointed when I finished season 6 and was waiting for season 7 to be posted....and waiting...and waiting... This week I peaked at your Facebook page which I had only done once before and you mentioned CZcams, which I had read before but ignored as I was watching on Prime. But this past Saturday I decided to take a look at CZcams. I am not a CZcamsr and have not watched any of your videos on CZcams until Saturday and I find that there is much more content on CZcams then on Prime. In fact today I just ran across your "competition" from last December 2019. Your CZcams videos are much more informative of your daily narrowboat experience than those on Prime. I've started watching your videos from the beginning on CZcams with all the content not included on Prime.. So....I don't know what is sooooo compelling about your Travels by Narrowboat. I have looked at some of the other narrowboat travel videos' by others and well....they just aren't you. There is something different about your travel videos. I will soon be joining the Travels by "something" retired crowd as I wrap up selling my house in Los Angeles and moving into the traveling retired life. No wife, kids all moved out, no dog, no cat, no hamsters, no lizards and no.....work!!!! I look forward to your future Travels by "Whatever" as I look forward to my travels by motorhome in the UK and Europe hopefully beginning in 2021 if COVID allows travel. Ah...I remember you started out in your camper van. Do you have any comments about the difference between living in your camper van compared to Aslan beside the obvious space. Such as were you experiencing cabin fever in the van compared to Aslan? I need to decide on what size motorhome to purchase/rent. Anyway....looking forward to your next video.

    another superb show! so many interesting elements - the subdued lighting, the unusually numerous vessels parked at the marina...what caught my eye was seeing you using your larger video camera, the Canon (was trying to suss out the model number) -- I enjoy the technical things -- hope the next episode continues showing Aslan's pullout from the water -- do you have to rent a room while she's being serviced, or do they finish in less than a day?

    High quality camera work (and editing) here, Kevin. A major step up from previous series. I assume that's because of all the extra cameras bought for TBM?
    The time travel aspect is harder than "12 Monkeys" to get my head round. Am I right in saying the first part here was filmed (and voice-overed) in July 2020 but published to CZcams in October 2020 and then half-way through the filming is from September 2019? But is the voice-over in the second part from 2019 or 2020?

      @CountryHouseGent  Před 3 lety +5

      Hi Brian. The first half was filmed in July 2020. The second part as I approached the bridge and onwards, was filmed in September 2019. All commentary is recorded 'on the fly' (I never do voiceovers) and is from it's corresponding time frame.

    Hey brother, just stumbled across your channel and watched a few of your great Lancaster Canal videos, both very informative and funny.
    Could I ask you if you've been as far as Bridgehouse Marina because we stayed at thier touring caravan park last year in 2022.
    If you have what season is it or better still do you have a link please?
    PS : I've now Subscribed.

    You sound like Bob Dillon. Intentional or just lucky?😁 I saw the boat Espresso and it set me to thinking. Someone should become the coffee boat and sail the canals selling lattes to parched narrow boaters.

      Cool. Well I've been compared to Michael Caine but Bob Dylan is a new one, Lynn. 😊 There is in fact a coffee boat down south. Last saw it on the Grand Union around Crick but that was almost 2 years ago

    Hi Kevin, nice to see the rewind in time to a point when life was so much simpler! So in 2020 you went from Garstang after lockdown up the Lancaster and then returned to the marina? I’m easily confused by time travel 😄 Take care. Nick

    I hope this question does not make you choke on your tea with laughter! but does your lister McLaren engine have any connection with McLaren engineering, ie McLaren Racing back in the days? thanks David

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 3 lety +3

      No but I thought the same at first David. The engine was marinised by JH McLaren, a company that built steam traction engines.

      Yes for sure it does have quite a homely feel to it but in any eventuality, I would continue to live aboard. Wouldn't buy bricks and mortar again.

      @@CountryHouseGent I reckon when one reaches a certain age (I have just turned 57) and do not have kids the appeal of buying a home recedes greatly, certainly has for me. I have never regretted not buying a house, I have had so much more freedom to live in different countries in the world and kept my wanderlust alive and well. I’ve been like that since childhood, I never envisioned being married, having kids and a normal life, I did try once with marriage but it was a disaster. I have always been at ease with my own company and I can see the rest of my days as single and not a home owner, both for me great reliefs!

    How often do you need to have the black epoxy applied to the hull of a narrow boat?

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 3 lety

      Depending on travel, 2 to 3 years is the norm'. Aslan had covered about 10 years of typical travel in just 2 years, so was easily due reblacking.
