Travels by Narrowboat - "Land of Confusion" - S08E13

- Welcome and you join Aslan & I as we leave the cosy moorings - a stone's throw from the Wedgwood factory - and continue southwards along the Trent & Mersey Canal towards Meaford and Stone.
The sun is warm and shining, the scenery rural and pleasant - a stark and refreshing contrast to the recent concrete-vista of Stoke On Trent.
During the day, we drop down through several locks and along the way, I mention a selection of recent and somewhat 'confusing' questions I've received on CZcams recently.
Eventually we arrive at the bustling yet charming town of Stone, where I settle for the next 5 days.

Greetings from Florida. It's so delightful to see the hamlets and villages along the canals and equally nice when you visit and film them. I can imagine myself conversing with the locals, enjoying a drink together. We're all in this life and time together and not so different, are we. Simply marvelous videos. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
My experience exactly Kent. It's very easy to strike up a conversation with random strangers along the canals. In towns and cities, not so much. 🙂
Nicely said Kent! Nicely said!
I am belly-laughing at the look on your face, after you read out the questions from the very video that answered those exact questions!! Once again, you have just made my Friday afternoon worth the wait for your visit! 😂
Regarding those folks who ask a question already answered - Kevin, you echo my sentiments exactly. Love your videos, thanks for posting them.
I was laughing as well! 🤣🤣🤣 Honestly I don’t know how Kevin kept that straight face!
Of course on of the best was as featured in a previous episode ... 'Why is a narrowboat called a narrowboat' ... oh my dear lord!!!
@@allanf8578 🤦♀😂
Great video,I for one i’m glad you decided not to just sit at a mooring and read a book your travels allow us to see the beauty of the canals and the history you add is a wonderful bonus ☺️Stone area was very nice indeed thanks again for sharing .
I think wearing your drover hat turns you into a great explorer, e.g., Sir Ranulph Fiennes, as you adventure through the canals. I definitely would have stopped by Plume of Feathers Pub for a hand pulled pint; maybe Bass Brewers? The best part, fantastic shots of the countryside. Thank you.
Yes, the scenery in this video was wonderful. Who is Ranulph Fiennes?
Thank you Mat. You're right, it does give a touch of the explorer. :)
A world famous explorer - likes losing fingers to frostbite. :)
Maybe now I'll change my bad habit of stopping a movie at the start of the ending credits. I just watched S08E13 for the fifth or sixth time, can't remember, and finally let it run through "coming up next time." Because of your tease, I have to anxiously wait days to find out the meaning and story behind the object in your hand. Eagerly waiting. Thanks Kevin?
Keep 'em keen, as they say, Bill. 😊
@@CountryHouseGent Had to find the translation for your reply. Gotta appreciate British phrases and sense of humor. I'll be happy as a pig in muck Friday, watching your new video.
Cheers
Another wonderful instalment of "Travels by Narrowboat" the clue to why you are not sitting in one place reading a book :)
"It's hard work but someone has to do it!" 😊
Like the "Shadow"....in that deep radio voice..."The Narrowboat Pilot knows" 😎🤣
The best commentary on narrow boating ever. I like the thought process behind everything while staying free to change at any time.
Thank you Kelly. Yes I do my best to remain in the moment, with nothing set in stone. 🙂
There are those that live life through a book, and then there are those that live life!
I would rather be the later. Keep traveling and making these great videos👍
Well said. Cheers for watching. :)
Kevin, I'm glad that you persevered and uploaded the video again.. Once again gorgeous countryside mixed with views of city and town. Thanks again letting us voyage along with you as part of your journey. Eagerly awaiting the next installment. In the meanwhile, to lower my blood pressure and increase my inner zen, I'm rewatching your two hour unedited video of Aslan chugging along the canals. Cheers...
Thank you Way.
Another relaxing time spent with you and Aslan. I live in West Virginia, USA. It’s a treat to see the English countryside and towns. All so beautiful. Until next time.......
Much appreciation for Kevin's kind and gentle responses to stupid questions.
I love watching Aslan and you as you travel around Britain. It brings me a sense of happiness and peace of mind. Ignore the dumb comments from people who are happy to stay home and criticize what they do not understand. I live in Kansas and we do not have any canals or anything like the beautiful scenery that you show me every episode.
Hi Karen, I beg to differ. Though you have no canals, Kansas is quite beautiful in my opinion. I am from North Carolina and the long stretches of flat open country is quite appealing to me. I think maybe because it is different from what I see every day. Have a great weekend!
@@martyb3783 I live in southeast Kansas and we have rolling hills and trees and scenery with lots of cattle grazing on the Flint Hills. I think it is beautiful as well. But Britain's ancient castles and quaint houses are truly something different. I love the English canals and peeking into people's back yards. Western Kansas has the miles and miles of flat open country and has the most beautiful sunsets in the world.
I'm from Wichita. Cheer's
@@MMSharpeningServicesWichita Greetings from southeast Kansas, I'm from Coffeyville and now live in Longton.
Evening Kevin..... just grab a cupa and we will join you OUR SUNSHINE on your travels. Let's hope you don't comments from "THE SAD PERSON BRIGADE" this week ...... thanks Kevin. Floss & Jan x
My parents boat was moored at Stone, Staffs for a while. You passed Lygean which is a boat I have photographed in the past. Last time i saw it was on the Grand Union near Stoke Bruerne. Lygean is the Roman for Lea and was the name of the Venture Scout unit I used to go to in Herts (where the River Lea runs through). Great video Kevin.
LOL , your radio voice is perfect for a scary ride on a narrow boat!
Yep, never ask me to read a bedtime story. :D
Kevin,
Bloody love your videos. No awful music playing in the background on your videos just plain old editing and the chug of the boat with your commentary. Kudos to you.
Cheers for that. Yes I like to keep it simple and let the images do the talking (well, and me as well). :)
Proud of you for sticking with it.
Been watching for years. Thank you! Your videos are relaxing and enjoyable. I've learned so much about your part of the world. Before your channel I had no idea about channels or narrow boats. You might lose followers for certain reasons, but you gain loyal followers for (maybe) the same reasons. It's refreshing to hear someone just speak without an agenda. :) (From the US).
Hello Kevin, I started out watching your narrowbooat series way early on and have watched all since, very fun to watch except the one that the mishap occurred outside the pub, that was indeed one that truly upset me. One of the things I miss is the masterchef cooking episode's and I really enjoyed those. But times move on and still get good entertainment, happy safe boating, cheers mate!
Thank you, you're very welcome. There will be more cooking to come.
Came up on my notifications and brought instant smile ..
Back at you Kevin ❤️
Gone through all your vlogs to the present and enjoy watching you and will continue even here in Japan where I am presently but at the end of next month will be home in Washington State, USA. I so enjoy watching you and Aslan on the canals and rivers and my family are thinking of going to England and renting a narrowboat for a month or more. We will see as this year we all went to Japan.
Love your dry sense of humor.
Hi Kevin! From San Diego area!
Nice Triumph shirt!!
What happened to the plank you use to have on the roof of Aslan?
I seem to think you did have a plank before. I did find evidence of a plank in the episode entitled “What I’ve been doing these past two months.” from ten months ago.
I got shot of it before leaving Garstang Marina, as I've never once used it and just meant 'clutter'. :)
Thank you for answering! Since it has been gone, have you had a situation where it might have helped? I have found that usually happens to me, after I have cleaned up clutter!! LOL!!!
No, not once. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent Concerned about your decision Captain Kevin. How are you going to stop shipmates from committing mutiny without the threat of punishment by "walking the plank"? Arr!
I'll just hang them. 😉
The internal combustion engine is under relentless attack by the green new deal tribe! So, we will in due course proceed and ultimately arrive at a new source of propulsion, but it will indeed take time. In the meantime many of us will be scorned and ridiculed in the process.
Life has it challenges: I live 22 minutes from the airport (on a good ,but rare day) but typically when I leave my neighborhood and join the cluster of vehicles on the interstate heading to Boston it can take well over a hour to reach my destination 🚘 idling on the freeway, now isn't that progress!
So, a few locks aren't so bad and you get some exercise!
Have a lovely day....cheers!!
Hi Kevin. And I love your travel videos. Quite honestly, I am a little jealous.
At 14:50 I smiled and clapped.. what an engine...!!! nothing against yours Kevin!!
Your videos are so relaxing I'm sitting on my back porch enjoying a cup of coffee watching I haven't miss a video yet since amazon prime keep em coming
Many thanks for that. :)
Thanks Kevin. Another thoroughly enjoyable video. It's sure sign summer is here, lots more boats on the canal. Hope your enjoying yourself Kevin, we are and especially on a Friday. Cheers mate. All the best flossy & Jan x
Always good to hear from you Flossy and that you've enjoyed watching. Have a great weekend.
You know, there just aren’t enough vlogs that capture the majesty of crane flies doin’ it…
I nearly filmed a couple of pigeons at it the other day, but just wasn't quick enough. :)
Stone seemed very accommodating !
Bridge sign warning :

It's a wonder you made it out alive ! ! !
Congratulations !
Must be ALL downhill from here on ?
Lovely Vlog, so busy, people in and out of locks, (if you know how to operate them that is), being passed by boaters who actuslly recognise you !
But NO cooking in this adventure !
I shall anticipate it next time ! !
Stay safe, take care !

I enjoy seeing women "of a certain age" driving their boats. I'm old enough to remember when we'd have been downstairs making tea or doing the washing up. Freedom!
Kevin, I have been watching your videos for several years. So glad you are back to cruising the canals. I love to see the countryside and mall towns. I do miss your cooking episodes as you have made some very “interesting” dishes in the past. I hope you will bring some of that back into your videos as it is all a part of your life on a narrow boat! Smooth sailing and thanks for what you do. Scott Wardingley
Many thanks Scott. Yes, I'll be doing some more cooking later in the year. 🙂
Of all the narrow boat videos we’ve watched, yours are the best! Awesome photography! But we are starting to miss your meal planning bits. We are growing rocket lettuce in our Kentucky garden now because of you ♥️
Btw. This is wife of ben8mag.
We both love you the best of all the narrowboaters
Hello and thank you, Mrs Ben8Mag. 🙂
Kevin you can't please everyone. I love your videos. They are a pleasure to watch. Biggest fan. 😊
Hi Kevin! So glad this came up on my notifications😀 Having an absolutely miserable day at work and so looking forward to watching when i get home❤ A cruise on the canals with my wonderful hubby by my side, a delicious ale and Country House Gent will make the world right again 🥰
Exactly Tam. First time I uploaded it, I forgot to click "notify subscribers" - hence, hardly anyone watched it.
@@CountryHouseGent No worries, Kevin!! Hubby and I enjoyed this video so much, we watched it twice 😉 We have done the same with many of your videos! They are just so beautiful and well done, we can’t get enough. We live in Central Oklahoma and it is beautiful in its own way also. We just don’t have anything like the canals you have over there. We really appreciate what you do! Hugs, Tam and Mike!
Another good one Kev. Give your tiller handle a scrub down. You had a bit of a smudge on your finger when they were crossed. Cheers!
Hi. That was grime from the centre rope.
Thank you🙏✝️🙏
Liked the horse chat on this one 😃
My pleasure Lorna. I do miss being around horses. 🙂
Such a beautiful day!
So funny, dry humour about the locks and the chimney. I’m laughing so hard, made my day , thank you. Stay safe 👍😊🌷
Narrowboat Lyceum just about ran you off the road and into the Armco geez Louise …all that hard work on the locks and we’ll end up seeing you in Lycra darting around in the heat of summer Cheers
Spandex
Actually I can just imagine the horrendous sight of me running around in some kind of tight fitting onesie. :D
@@CountryHouseGent question is would it be sleek black or tiger pattern? Rowrrrr!
Nice to see someone who has an understanding of horses and riding!
I asked BW (yes BW) some years ago if we could work the Shroppie with our hunter, only to be told that the canals weren't designed for horses..... Soo no understanding there....
Ha ha, isn't that just typical. Is that why it's called a 'towpath'. :D
Ahoy from San Diego (not unlike your Triumph T-shirt in this video) and like your shirt …and you, a fellow biker and boater. I know you’re a HD rider, and they are beautiful machines -but in my case I am a classic Indian rider. Quite liked this video-like all of them -but this one in particular for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on. Seemed like you were having fun this production; in command of life, top of your boating-game, a smashing job of the video production and yet taking it all in your stride. Confident -is probably a good word for it.
Thank you again for humor, your effort, and your care in post production. It is appreciated and enjoyed.
Hello Eric and thank you. Yes I'm enjoying 'just being me' this time round - a newfound confidence, as you say. Happy cruisin'.
Ahh. “Soft hands” brings back equitation days of yore. Thanks for the memories, Kevin! These days I’m strictly “on the buckle.” 😉
Indeed, riding is a lore unto itself. Some instructors are darn near frightening to be honest. :)
Excellent radio voice and covet your hat!
My Grandparents are from Stone so i spent a lot of my early childhood around the Canal. Made me feel all nostalgic..
Thanks for the great video!
Thanks Simon. More than happy to bring back some fond memories. :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Kevin, love the sense of humor
Cheers Ron
Hello Kevin. We're saving you up for this evening, however I had a bit of a muse awhile ago as regards the Gent. Have you given any thought to the, how would a gentleman put it, the coming unpleasantness? I think about it all the time and we work pretty hard to get ready on our end. At present in your case you're pretty much dependent on pork pies and Aldis. However, should things get troublesome your place in this mess makes me envious. You have good shelter, heat that uses sticks if necessary, and with the addition of filtration (like a Berkey) all the water you'll ever need. You have solar. And best of all with a topped off fuel tank you have massive mobility to go to where the third essential is...food. You spend a lot of time where it is. Have you thought of purchasing a collapsible fishing rod just for giggles?
Hello. Yes I have given much thought over the past 2 or 3 years as to how 'ready' I am for the (possible) coming shenanigans. Therefore, I try to ensure that Aslan and I remain as independant as possible, so that ties can be cut with very short notice. My main attitude is to ultimately ensure that I'm ready as much as is possible. After all, the past 2 years have shown that it's pointless trying to 'enlighten' those who chose not to listen. Every man/woman for themselves, is a sadly unavoidable approach to these things. Many are sadly lost to the 'way of things' - we did our best, so don't come running to us and so on . . . :)
@@CountryHouseGent It's great to hear from you and that you get it, mebbe more than most. Just one less thing to worry with here should the internet stop working one day. Kevin will do just fine. As they say in Jolly Ol', cheers!
Great video Kevin. I now understand how the cross over bridge works.
Pleasure as always to see your creative camera work, Kevin.
Quick question?…… eeeer, …..actually,… I think you may have already answered it 😉😁👍🏻😎
Ha, thanks as always Pete. 😁
Well done my travelling friend
Worth the wait.I know what confusion is all about at 71😄
Another great vid, many thanks. And many thanks for supporting our friend J on the fuel boat Bargus. Happy travels
My pleasure. Cheers,
Love the hat. Shades of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Another great video by the Narrow boat master. Hello from Pensacola, Fl.
Good evening, as you can see, now Ive descovered your channel, Im watching all kinds of your videos. These are some of the best Ive seen on narrowboats, well done. I have and usually live on a 57' narrowboat on a permanent mooring on the K&A. I have to say, Im not normally a traditionalist when it comes to boats, my own being a 1993 Johnathan Wilson Josha trad hull, but I really like the look of Aslan. The only things Im not convinced on are the portholes for light in the boat and the long front deck which could make extra living space if the top were to cover it. I do love the engine, my own is a 42Hp Perkins 4 cylinder MC42. Keep making the fabulous content. Cheers, Peter.
Hi Kevin, Rachael & Damien here again!
Loving the season so far! I don’t know what we will do whilst waiting for season 9 haha. Will you be bringing back the cooking segments? We LOVE THEM!
Did I actually get first comment on a Country House Gent video?!!! Made my day! Great job Kevin!!
You did indeed Anthony. :)
@@CountryHouseGent hahahaha !!! Yesss!!!
hi.your photography is so beautiful
Thank you Mary.
Stone! That was the start point where Terry Darlington, his Wife and their narrow dog setoff for their mammoth trip in their narrowboat to the south of France, including crossing the English channel! I bought his book "Narrow Dog to Carcassonne" and the follow up "Narrow Dog to Indian River". Both good reads.
I didn't know that David, though I have heard of the channel crossing. Quite a brave endeavour.
Thanks Kevin!
We love watching your videos. Country House Gent is our favorite channel on CZcams. Always a great way to start the weekend.
Keep spreading your good cheer. It is very much appreciate. 🍻
Will do Jay and cheers as always for watching.
What a catchy tune 👌 I love it Kevin
Cheers Dinah, of all the theme tunes I've done, it's my favourite. The original.
That comment about the locks 🤦🏼♀️🤣 and the expression on your face - absolutely priceless!
I have to say that the quality of your filming is brilliant, it really is like traveling along with you.
My pleasure Stephanie and cheers for watching.
Cluelessness runs rampant. But you and Aslan keep chugging along. It is, indeed, a good job you have a sense of humor.
Why do you travel on Narrowboat….gosh how about I’m getting paid for this and I like my job! Do what you and love what you do?
A oldie but a goody ha! CHG you are a brilliant guy!
Started watching your series again on prime and my grand kids love it. they stay on the week ends and at bed time they ask to watch your vids.
Oh wow that's fabulous Gern. Many thanks to you all. 🙂
Kevin you were my first Narrowboat channel and still one of my favorites. You are being trolled with the insignificant questions and they are probably "pleased as punch" that you mentioned it, however, it did add a good laugh to your already great sense of humor.
Very true Billie. I like to turn the negativity and toxicity into something enjoyable - which probably winds them up even more. 🥴 😆
That blonde women in the white t shirt was bloody beautiful mare any plans of meeting anyone to share your travels with 👍
Who could say James, these things can never be planned.
Thank you
I’ve seen a utube video all about that house with the private moorings. Can’t think where now.
Cruising the Cut
Pretty cool door to door fuel delivery
Ay and shear luck I looked out the side hatch as they were coming.
Its a pity you didn't film the turn over bridge, but imagine trying to build one. It always got me how the brickwork took on a spiral and seeing that bricks weren't always just laid flat. Amazing architecture along the cut.
Thank you for the video. Hope you are doing well and having a good time on the canals. I might get to fish in the old mighty Mississippi sometime this month. Take care - Be safe.
Thanks Tom. Hoping you have many a nibble. :)
good vid on the cut keep up the good vid thanks lee
Nice cruising Thanks😊
You're always welcome Susan.
I hope you managed to visit Oatcakes and Milkshakes in Stone ;) Either way you must stop somewhere in the area for a sausage and bacon oatcake!
Interesting comments from people.
Why? I really like the in and slip for sell and no can't travel canals without going through locks. Duh! Ha!!
Really pretty. One of the nicest canals I think. I liked the house with the mooring too, I wonder why they want to sell such nice place.
Great video, Thanks!
It's so nice to watch this new episode on a Friday afternoon, thank you Kevin and Aslan. Have a good weekend 🌻
Hey Kevin, love your show. I watched all the seasons on Amazon-thanks for helping me get through this blasted Plague! Been following you on CZcams ever since S6 ended.
Question: Why no cooking anymore? Altho, as a veg I'd kinda cringe during the meatier parts🥴, I miss seeing that part of daily life on a narrow boat. &, while I'm at it, a little plinking on your guitar would be nice too...
Sincerely,
Susan from Seattle
Hi Susan and cheers for watching. At the moment, while it's the warm and sunny outdoor season, I'm concentrating on travelling. When the colder days arrive, I shall move to more indoors stuff.
Hi Kevin. Great to see when quite a few people help by either closing lock gates or even operating locks for you. Stone looks like a nice town to visit. Take care. Nick
Thank you Nick. Yes it's been very noticeable recently how friendly and helpful people are becoming along the canals. Maybe a renewed zest and appreciation for the small things in life, after some recent traumatic event/s, possibly?
Hi I just wanted to say I am enjoying all the episodes you have made and I love the cooking you have done some great things that I am going to try many thanks and keep going
I completely enjoyed your latest scenic run thru "England's green and pleasant land". I admit to getting a good laugh at your commentary.
Hi Kevin! You really lucked out on the locks this time. I agree, the Persia is a lovely boat.
Yes it was. Time has been on my side with this trip.
