- In this video I show you how I replace a crankshaft position sensor on a 2003 Nissan Altima. I lost some camera footage so some of the camera angles are not the best and i debated on posted the video, but hopefully this video helps someone out.
The exact vehicle in this video is a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S four cylinder with automatic transmission.

Great teacher. Clear demonstration. No reservation in helping people fix car. Long live Big Dog!Also very humble. I like it.
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
The video shots in this video are not up to my usual standards because I lost some footage of this repair. I debated on whether or not I should post it due to this. In the end I decided to post in in the hopes that it might help someone out.
Thank you for the thorough description. I couldn't find that one so now I know where to look tomorrow when I replace it.
David Malott Thank you, glad it could be of some help.

VERY HELPFUL!!!!!
Zachary Warren Good to hear it helped you out.
Great video, I have a 2004 xtrail with this problem, think I'am going to attempt it myself I got a quote from Nissan in ireland and it was €400.
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you helpful
Glad it helped!
Thanks
Glad it helped!
I gave up as I thought the sensor was underneath between cylinder 3&4 .
A neighbour managed to do this job quite easily , turns out sensor is underneath where bracket got taken off
Thanks so much for posting. If I were to take this to the shop how much would it cost approximately?
I had 2 codes C0335 and p0335 for the crankshaft position sensor a changed it but still won't start it cranks but won't start what do you think it could be
Is this the same for a 2002 Nissan Maxima 3.5?
Awesome video. Thank you very much.
Thank you. No the 3.5 is a V6 so it is going to be different procedure.
Thank you for the video. I would like to know if the sensor would be easier to access from underneath the vehicle. I got this P0335 code when I took the car to my local Auto Zone. I would like to change it myself because I can only imagine what the Nissan dealer will charge for the labor to do it.
Marc W I think it's easier from the top.(on this vehicle)
Nissan's genius engineering?????? I just changed the crank sensor in my daughters 06 Altima, unless you are really good with your hands you will have a really hard time getting this sensor changed. The hardest part for me was getting the new one seated back into place because of the new o-ring. I bought an OEM sensor which was a more expensive but I DO NOT want to do this ever again!! The best way I found is to get the connector off first to get easier access to the bolt, once the bolt is out, connect the connector back onto the sensor and it will be easier to pull the old sensor out.
They were redesigned so sometimes you can access the bolt without unplugging it and sometimes it is in the way. Thanks for the input.
I've had to change mine twice on my 06 Nissan spec v with the same 2.5 liter engine as your Altima. And yes it SUCKS doing it!!
My car stalled in freeway and wouldnt start after towing it started right up but this code came up is this reason for stall or is it other reason no other codes
I replaced the cam and crank sensors. I'm still having starting issues. A what could this be. 2006 nissan sentra
Hi, GREAT VIDEO,. MANY THANKS, I have a Nissan X-Trail 2007, gasoline (petrol), 2.5, the same engine as the Altima I believe - QR25DE.. I've just had a breakdown on the highway due to the engine alternately losing power and then recovering. I don't know if it's the crankshaft or camshaft sensor or some other problem like the pump, fuel filter, accelerator pedal or bad fuel. In your opinion, do you think a faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor sensor could cause such a symptom ? Note that the engine starts easily and can be revved up to 7000 no problem while stationary., Also, I've faced difficulty buying a diagnostic tool that works. Could you please tell me which make and model I should buy.
voveing
Of course it needs proper troubleshooting, but if it is a cam or crank sensor it will most likely have a code stored so it should be scanned at the very least. Here is a DIY diagnostic tool video I just did that might help you: czcams.com/video/Vys-iUboDPw/video.html
1 month ago my nissan was scan and found code P0335, use to have hard start and stops while ideling. Finally refused to start a week ago. I changed crankshaft sensor at the back of engine, maintained the camshaft sensor on top of the engine and the car will not still start. i went further to test the resistances of the three sensors.2.74Mohms old crankshaft, 6.98Mohms new crankshaft and 3.89Mohms camshaft. Please any way out?
I would start by doing some basic fuel and spark checks on a crank/no start.
when problem started 1 month ago, had to change the 4spark plugs after the check engine light came ON. i coundn't change the crankshaft sensor because i was unable to locate the position so i continued to use the car like that. located the position after the engine finally stopped.
Question, how do i check the fuel and spark?
Also the crankshaft sensor was reading 0.274Mohms and not 2.74

thank you, save me $$
Aiken Sundara Glad it helped!
The conector is stuck to the crank sensor. I pressed down on the green button. Any tips?
Make sure you press that green lock tab all the way down (sometimes it can be tough and it takes a lot of force to push it all the way in). Also, sometimes connectors can become fused together, you may have to pry (gently) on the connector to get it to come apart.
What is that scan tool you use? Thanks for yours videos.
Felipe Bessouat Thank you. My main scan tool is an Autel Maxysis MS906.
What would I do if the old one is stuck? It’ll turn but won’t come out. Seeing everyone slide it right out angers me because I would like that to happen in my case
Is it in the same location for a 2003 Nissan Altima SE 3.5L?
No, the V6 model has it located in a different location. If I remember correctly, it is located underneath the vehicle. It should be under the engine cover that is located on the bottom of the engine, at the front of the vehicle.
Will the cowl come off? That may give you some extra room to work.
Robert Warren It might help a bit, but it doesn't seem like it would be worth the amount of work it would take. At least in my opinion.
I have this exact code and issue but sensor snapped off
Did you get the connector out to reach the sensor bolt ?? Cause i tried everything possible i couldn't reach the bolt because of the connector .. thanks for your video
I believe I mentioned in in video but the original style sensors have the connector in the way of the bolt and must it be disconnected first before the bolt can be removed (pain in the butt). Newer updated sensors can be unbolted first.
@@BigDog50001 thank you after hrs i finally got the old one out and installed the new one then unfortunately the new one didn't work and the car didn't start at all , i put the old one again soooo frustrating :(((
@@BigDog50001 How'd you get the connector / harness off after you pressed the piece in? Mine is welded in there and I can't get a grip on it to get it out. Any ideas?
@@diznanl They are on there tight, Nissan loves tight connectors. Have work on them to loosen it up.
@@BigDog50001 thanks... Was finally able to get a light directly on it after taking off the engine cover and peer down between the valve cover and get a needle nose on it. That camshaft sensor is a pain in the a$$. Great tutorial. Much thanks
Would it be easier to get this from the bottom? I have to change mine, and I am planning on doing it this weekend.
Sometimes yes, depending on the situation. Without having the car on a lift, I am not a huge fan of laying on my back to get it in most cases.
I changed mine out last weekend from the top; it wasn’t too bad. Way easier than expected. Thanks for the great video!
i changed the crank positioning sensor and it still stales turning on...can it be the spark plugs??
Sari Valentin-Feliciano Did you have a P0335 or any other codes in engine computer? Does it start and then immediately stall every time or just occasionally?
Big Dog50001 it doesn't even starts that was the only code
Sari Valentin-Feliciano I wouldn't throw any more parts at it. On a crank/no start, I would go back to basics and check for spark, fuel, compression, cam and crank signals, and timing (and more). Don't overlook the obvious, make sure there is fuel in the tank and that the crank sensor is actually plugged in and the Nissan anti-theft recognizes the key to the vehicle. This might be one of those times where it pays to have someone look at the vehicle who knows how to troubleshoot no starts.
This the second one I changed on my car in less than a year why do they keep going bad?
I think mostly due to being poorly made, especially aftermarket ones. It is possible some of it may be due to the location and heat build up too.
I just replace my crankshaft , man it was very hard simply because you can't see what your doing. Almost gave up and called a mobil mechanic
Yeah I hear you, I'm glad you got it done. Now imagine trying to do this job and film it too!
Merci d,avoir la maison nissan au Togo
how much is the cost.of.this sensor
Ricardo Mejia 40$
My sensor broke off during removal
would sensor make it crank but not start?
chevy lover Yes, but so will a million other things. The engine computer needs to see the crankshaft position sensor signal for it to run (along with other signals). This is where it helps to have a good scan tool so you can look for crank and cam inputs, tachometer movement while cranking the engine over and also to see if there are any stored trouble codes.
