  • For the first time EVER, I am sharing a Real Life budget with you. A couple of months ago, we asked my readers to submit their REAL information. Real spending, real debt, and real savings goals.
I am taking those real life numbers and showing you how I would organize that information using my Budget By Paycheck Method.
For this first one, we are showing and stuffing all of the information into one video. In the future, we will break these down into two videos to highlight all of the details of my BBP method.

Miko...I work for the IRS and I just want to say that this woman receives an awful large tax refund. Which is nice...but it means she is paying way too much tax. It seems that part of the tax system is the same in Canada as USA. If she wants, she can reduce her tax withholding by $100 per week, which is pretty much $400 per month more in her pocket. And still she'll receive a tax refund of about over $1k. She can talk to her payroll department on how to reduce her withholdings. Just a thought, if she's interested. I see this everyday at work and most people don't realize they can help themselves out. Great vid.

I thought the same thing, that’s a pretty significant tax refund - which means the government is benefiting throughout the year and she has less $ in her pocket. She should definitely talk to her payroll department, maybe they have her set up incorrectly in the payroll system.

Hockey is one of my biggest parental regrets (sons are 35 and 33 now). A) HUGE sums of money spent on equipment, camps, ice time, travel teams - they played all the way to Juniors. Her 11 year old is just getting started, costs are going to be climbing from here - and I didn't see a sinking fund for $600+ skates and $150 sticks (that break very easily); B) Injuries - concussions, broken wrist, broken ankles, broken ribs . . . C) hockey is all consuming time wise; D) past college they play very little, an occasional pick up game or short men's league. Encourage a sport that he will continue - running, swimming, golf, tennis. Less expense, less injury. We stupidly spent tens of thousands of dollars we did not have to blow. Also, how is this for crazy - one son played in a travel league that played Sundays in a neighboring state - the league was so rough they wouldn't let the teams shake hands at the end of the game for fear a fight would break out (happened on more than one occasionl) and they always had a couple of officers present at the games. This was an elite travel team (several of the opponents were sons of professional players). WTH were we thinking - what were we teaching them?

Don't be so hard on yourself. At the time you did the best you knew as a loving parent. As a loving mom!. You wanted your children to have fun. And be happy that now you learned something now. You may never have realized what you realize know. Appreciate this. Maybe you can help young mothers realize the cost in the long run. And already started by suggesting other sport alternatives.

Had to pause at 20:14 to correct you. Closing a credit card will still remain on your report for 10 years, so that history is not lost right away. Closing a card will however impact credit utilization once its reported to the bureaus and accounts for 35% of your score so can cause a drop in score. The utilization sweet spot is >5% reporting. Once that reports then pay the balance so you dont pay interest.
If your score is important right now, keep the account open but do a freeze on it so you can't spend.

This is very helpful. Can't wait to see more budget examples. Started using the workbook in Feb and have been tweaking my setup. I think I've got it down now for march. It was a lot of work in the beginning, but it forced me to really think about how I use money as a resource in my life. I feel very intentional and more in control now because I finally got serious about budgeting. No more winging it. Thank you for putting yourself out here as an example. I am determined to be debt free.
For 2021, can you add a couple of summary pages to the back of the workbook that we could use to wrap up the year and/or add reflection notes? This would be nice for those of us who buy the bound version. They could be as simple as 2 lined pages with a title, "Year end wrap-up and reflections".

Buying clothes every month is not a necessity, also I agree, your child is only in sports you can afford. Some kids with 2 parents still are in none. It is an opportunity to teach your children young about finances so they dont end up making the same mistakes. I know being in Canada myself. 75 bucks is barely any food, I would take my fun and clothes money for food.

I definitely need to move a few due dates around. The last time I did that, it helped us enormously! When we moved and changed loans, we got new due dates and it does make my budget out of whack!
Here's to a few Wonky months coming up! 😜🤪🤯

This is so helpful. Thank you for all you do to educate us. I'm looking at a divorce and this method is really helping me to save for me and my son to find a new place to live and it gives me hope and confidence when my soon to be Ex is telling me that we will Never make it without his income. I need to prove him wrong

I get paid weekly and my biggest hurdle was thinking I needed to contribute to my sinking funds every week. I was literally stuck on how to do this!! Thankfully, Miko, you showed me exactly how to manage this and that its ok to not put $$ in the envelopes each week.

Ohh I would love to see what Miko would do to my budget! Right now after everything I have about $200 to last me 2 weeks.

This was SO helpful!! Do you have any of these worksheets available to use please? Some of them would make a great addition to my digital bbp workbook. Would be good to go right back to basics!!

Here in Canada it is standard to pay for a chequing account. Where I live the only option not to pay is with tangerine but it’s an online banking company and if you live in a small area like I do, you can’t find a bank that allows you to withdraw cash. I use tangerine for my savings accounts that I can just transfer my money to my other bank to withdraw. Also if she has a mortgage with the same bank she can not cancel her chequing account unless the loan is paid for in full. Thought I’d let you know since it is different from the states.
