It's said that when it comes to engines, there's no substitute for cubes. You could say the same thing about MPVs as well, Manufacturers pull all the clever stunts they can with folding seats, cubby holes in unlikely places and repositioning items like fuel tanks but when all's said and done, sheer size counts for a lot. And People Carriers don't come with much more sheer size than Hyundai's i800. Why? Because, not to put to fine a point on it, the i800 is a van with windows and eight seats.
While that doesn't at first seem the most promising start for a passenger vehicle, it's one that has and continues to work very well in many markets. We're a bit sniffy about commercial-based vehicles in this country, but it's a different story in Europe where, for example, Mercedes-Benz doesn't employ anything like the subterfuge it does here to disguise the fact that its Vianos were always marketed by its commercial vehicles arm. Hyundai always sold this i800 as a car and if you're able to see it that way, then you'll surely agree that it scores well in terms of sheer practicality. But does it make the grade as a used buy? Find out here.

I own one of these, back seats don’t fold however with the massive amount of space in the back you can get soooo much in there! And it takes 8 passengers and it is classed as a car, so you pay car insurance not commercial insurance which I had to pay on my old hi ace which I converted to 6 seats which although I loved it was slow noisy and strange rattles and bonks! This is car is smooth and quiet! It will fit in most multi storey car parks as it is lower than my old van however as it is wide It can be quite challenging getting out this vehicle, as he stated it is based on a van design it is solid robust and reliable and very enjoyable to drive as you have such a good commanding view. My wife loves it as well, hope this helps someone! Only downside might be when government stops us driving diesels! Footnote: (can’t get 560miles to full tank around 430 at max)

I know a family who have chosen one of these in order to be able to go where they want, with plenty of room for luggage + children + pets. They have become very attached to it, and they would not want to have a smaller mpv due to the more limited interior space. They also like the way it drives.
Which means that this review is 'on the money' as they say...
The only real rivals to the i800 are the 'grey imports' such as the Nissan Elgrand or Toyota's Vellfire or Alphard, both with automatic transmission. A friend of mine has a Vellfire, and it is a very fine car - but I prefer the manual transmission.
In any case, the Hyundai is considerably cheaper to buy on the 2nd-hand hand market.

With 5 seats up, how many 23kgs suitcases can one fit on the back (with the 3rd row seats flattened)?

Unfortunately the third row seats don’t flatten, that’s the only bad thing about the car but the boot is massive.
