  • The Hyundai iMax is a commercial van that has been transformed into a people mover. But does it work for families? Nedahl Stelio puts it to the test.

Biggest complaint.. "No center console..." (then puts handbag in place)

Personally I love the space between the front seats. It's a handy place to put a big shopping bag full of drinks and food for during a road trip and my wife uses it to walk to the back to attend the youngest children (I've got three). And whether it's full or empty, I always have more than enough engine power. Great cruiser, especially for long distances and yeah... the kids just love it. And I personally don't think it's ugly. There're some other vans out there that are pretty ugly. This one looks quite nice. And o yeah, the amounts of building materials and furniture I've moved with it. No problem whatsoever. You get a lot of car for relatively little money. That's how you should look at it.

That’s the main reason I would get it, the no center console. I currently have a Kia carnival/Sedona and a 1 year old. Most of the time he’s okay in his car seat, but when he’s not and needs attention the wife has to crawl Over the center console and do some acrobatics haha. Our next van I’m looking into something more practical like this.

After owning an iMax for over 3 years now I can confirm that it's brilliant, and having the space between the front seats is almost the best feature! So it's really disappointing to see this reviewer say "the space between the front seats is just empty, and inconvenient", she then proceeds to put her purse there! As an example, when the kids need help doing up their seat-belts or whatever on a day when it's pouring down outside, there's nothing better than just walking down the middle to the sort them out without having to go outside, incredibly convenient!

HI, thanks for your comment, out of curiosity, How do you carry large items in the van, I'm under the impression the rear seats can't be folded down.... Are they easily removable? I'm stuck between the imax, multivan and carnival.
Also if I was to have x2 baby seats in the 2nd row, do you think grandparents would still be able to get into the 3rd row?

We owned the H-1 (as it is called in other markets) from 2012 and used it when our children were young. It was the only affordable option here in Thailand. We sold it later, because we then only used for some large trips. We all really liked the space, the ride quality and the quite low fuel consumption. So am still looking at it, but I miss the modern safety features my Mazda CX-5 or the Kia Grand Carnival has. The front looks now nicer and there is an variant with a nicer and more modern interior, but the missing safety features are currently a «no go» for me. Hoping, Hyundai will bring a better, really «new» vehicle (soon).

The Imax has the potential to take on the Kia Carnival and SUVs if Hyundai
invested more into the Imax they have the space just add Awd and with all new suspension change the front interior design with the safety features and rear seats to more adjustable in folded down etc then I think sales would increase

The Indonesian market version got nicer tail lamps with LED strip and center console between the driver's and passenger's seats. But the infotainment system is aftermarket not integrated.

It's really nice that the center aisle is open like that. But I guess a little ledge or something would be helpful. The exterior is pretty hideous but that interior looks really nice. If they made it really fuel efficient, (like the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid here in the U.S.,) it would be pretty awesome.

So many things missed... are the seat removable? How is it fully loaded, is it quite on the road? Mpg? Top speed? Can I get an m16 in the boot? Where can I store my pistols and grenades? Does it come with bullet proof windows??

Side doors rubber seal after prolong exposure to hot sunny day tends to make door to stuck amd very difficult to open. Often cause door handle to break when opening door. I doublt Hyundai is doing something till these days.

I agree, the minivans are somewhat small. With a baby and all the baggage you end up losing a ton of floor space. The open area between the seats is great for when the kid gets fussy and one of the parents gotta make a jump back there.

Was pretty good in its day, clearly tired and dated in 2018 though. Just goes to show that you can’t slap a facelift on yesterday’s old nag and expect to impress those that actually have some options.
