Unboxing my Firewire SciFi 2.0 Surfboard purchased from Real Watersports

  • wanted to do a short review of the delivery of my new firewire SciFi 2.0 which I purchased from ‪@REALWatersports‬
    The website is easy to navigate when looking for boards and the buying process is as easy as buying a book from amazon. The only negative is having to pay for shipping.
    The surfboard was packaged well, it could have been better on top, if a heavy box was dropped on top, corner first, it could puncture the top layer and potentially damage the board. I'm certain insurance would cover that in some way but it would suck to not have your board right away. I think they could use another top layer of cardboard just to mitigate the possibility of something bad happening.
    For the sake of my unboxing, the board was in fantastic shape. The box had some light damage but nothing too serious.
    All in all, I rate this purchase and receiving experience a 10 out of 10.
    Thanks ‪@REALWatersports‬
    Stay tuned for the review of the SciFi 2.0, I hope to surf it in the next few weeks and get a video out. Fingers crossed for some decent surf.

    True story: My 9 year old was sitting with me while I watched this yesterday. When you opened the box he said, “Your board was packed way safer than that, dad.” He was not wrong…
    I recently got a board (FireWire Sunday, in no small part thanks to your great reviews!) from Cleanline. I’ve got no beef with Real at all. But again, the boy made a very accurate observation. Just figured I’d give that two cents :)

      I agree. I remember my firewire seaxe which I ordered from cleanline was packed way better. But to be honest I think it came from firewire directly as a dropship, I could be wrong though. But at the end of the day as long as the board didn't get damaged I am happy.

      haha, pissed too many people off I guess. I equated it to telling people where to park when going to Disneyland. nothing secret but somehow offended a few folk who think it's a private place. I could understand if I told people to go surf the main point but literally, i was telling people to go when it was crappy and surf the places that people don't surf. rather funny but i want to be respectful nonetheless.

    I unboxed mine today, it's a 6' 0. Interesting board, doesn't look high performance but more hybrid. Looks like a huge sweet spot running through the centre of the board. Will be in for a good run of swell so hopefully it will get a good thrashing.

      still waiting to use mine. Covid took me out for 2 weekends but worse, I lost my apatite for 5 days and didn't eat. Lost 20lbs and all my boards feel way too big and corky. Trying to gain my weight back. Still 10lbs to go but I am hoping this weekend if the swell stays a bit. Let me know how it goes for you. @@ThomyeSurfs bummer about the covid, hope you're back surfing. Initial impressions are that it paddles well, catches waves quute easy and needs a decent wave to get going. Feels quite stable on the takeoff, which helps because I've spent too much time on midlengths! 😄

      @@madprof6719 nice. thanks for that. I too got it out one day. it felt great. I did manage to post a small teaser clip on instagram but waiting to take it out 2 more times before posting an official review/opinion.
      first thoughts though, I like it a lot. The day I surfed, was medium size surf but soft. And as predicted, the board went well in soft waves because of the wider tail. I felt like when i pushed on the tail, it pushed back and generated speed. It also paddled fairly easy for me too even though mine is less than 19" wide.
      All in, thumbs up for first session.

    I love REAL, and not just because I live in NC. I don't know if you listen to SPIT podcast, or pay attention to the Boardroom show, but REAL cameraman Jeffrey was there recording and Trip helped out on the judging. Also, note, I have ordered two boards from Real. The first board I got had the tiniest little dent in it...and it was not a pressure ding...it was hard to explain. It would not have impacted the surf at all. But it was my first ever new board I had purchased, and that blemish bummed me out for what I paid. They immediately sent a new one and I sent back the one I purchased. That won me over. Enjoy the new stick!

      @@ThomyeSurfs Top....so here was the deal. It was a Lib Tech Puddle Jumper...like I said, my first new board ever. Lib Tech usually have a sticker on them, something along the lines of Made in the USA...I pulled the sticker off, as it was in an odd placement...and under that was an indention...almost like someone covered it up. I explained that to REAL, sent a picture, told them how stupid I felt "complaining" about it, and it was not REAL as they do not put those stickers there. Anyway, REAL's response was money, they wanted me to be perfectly excited and comfortable with my new board. I did pay to send it back, but it was not much. And it was worth it for the peace of mind.

    Hey, thomye....you figure out the right fins for the sci-fi 2.0, yet? I also have it in the 5'7" and have been struggling with it. I've had good and bad surfs and it hasn't been consistent. Tried several fins and the verdict is still out.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety

      I have not taken the board out yet. I've got covid in late Dec so I was out of the water for 2 weekends. I wasn't all that sick but for days, I had zero apetite and lost about 15% of weight. So all my boards feel too corky for me and too big. Before testing it out, I am trying to gain my 20lbs back. I hope to get it out this weekend or soon. I am going to start with my Medium Toledo fins for bigger days and try the mick fanning large for the smaller days. I'll definitely include fin choices in the review once I get some sessions on it.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety

      Just took the board out yesterday and had the Medium Toledo fins on it. The waves had a little size but it was too soft so I probably should have gone with the Fanning large. Anyways, I'll test the two and let you know. Also, I'll likely try it as a quad at some point just to see how it differs.

      @@ThomyeSurfs glad you beat covid. Hopefully you come back even stronger and get some solid sessions on the sci-fi2. The sci-fi 2.0 floats pretty well and it's true that commanding the back end of the board really gets the board moving. Though, for some reason the front half and back half of the board don't jive. I'm sure it's my surfing style and the right fin combination. Just have to figure that out. I'll let you know.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety

      @@RBNK157 I have actually surfed the Rocket wide in a 5'4. On the day I surfed it, my 5'3 Seaside was better only because the waves were weak. The rocket wide seems to be a slight more refined for performance than the Seaside at around the same height.
      Whether the Sci-Fi 2.0 is worth it, i'm not quite sure yet. I have only surfed it once so far, which I posted on instagram. Go check out the clips. But before I review it and make any sort of recommendation, I definitely want to surf it in small to medium punchy waves as welll as bigger waves.
      Having said that, in soft waves, even though this board is narrower at center than the rocket wide, because of the wide tail, it works better from what I remember. The seaside is a better groveler but I am still surprised at how solid and drivey the SciFi2 was on the mush.
      Anyways, give me a few weeks and after my review, ask me again. then I'll have a better formulated opinion.

      @@RBNK157 one quick thing though, the 5'4 RW though wider than my 5'7 SciFi2, had less litters. Probably another reason why the SciFi2 went so well in the soft stuff. Again, verdict is not out yet on other types of waves. We have a good swell coming in next week so I'll plan to surf it then.

For me, since most of the waves I surf are soft, if a board happens to go well on the soft waves, I tend to like them. Most boards, almost all board, go well in fast strong waves or at least better.
