I am 84 years old and not as sharp as I once was but the Ninja 650 is the perfect bike as far as I'm concerned. I have had 72 motorcycles in my career of all types street and dirt and raced Moto X for 12 years. This 650 Ninja is the best motorcycle I have ever had except for the dirt which requires something altogether different.

As a total newbie I went with the 400. Mainly because of cheaper insurance, but also because it's lighter/easier to handle and I don't plan on doing highways for awhile (if ever). I found a 2019 with only 2,400 miles for $3,700 - private seller, and the bike already has 80% of common mods so that saved me another $700+. So far it's a super fun bike!
Funny you say that. I keep getting quoted near identical rates between the two. Oddly enough the Z400 is the most expensive. Leaving me confused as hell.
@@MixedGrid It's because it's an inline 4 cylinder 400cc will cost more to manufacture relatively to their 650 vs z6, and a new engine style (for modern years, at least), which is in theory possibly unpopular (from Kawasakis standpoint), means higher MSRP. Used Zx4RR will be in 2 years time probably around 8k asking price

400 might not be super comfy for long periods but it does 200kmph. Plenty for highway speeds and overtaking

I had a 06 650r , 08 zx10r, 08 zx14 , 16 zx14R, 21 zx10r, 21 zx14R, 21 H2 Carbon, 18 H2 sx se. I kept the 4 newer bikes . Kawasaki makes a great machine. You can’t go wrong with a kawi’

Bought a used 650 for my starter bike 3 months ago and I’m loving it so far the power was not an issue. Long rides are not an issue and it handles the highway just fine.
How is the fuel economy on it?
Do you find it go have too much torque to learn on or does it respond well?

This was a great video brother. I just picked up a 2022 Ninja 400 last weekend. I started out doing track days on a Ninja 250 that my dad bought years ago when I was 15 (29 now). I loved that light weight bike. It only topped out at like 90 but you did 90 almost all round our local track here. It also had an R1 front end and the rear was changed as well, don't remember what tho. But I went with the 400 cuz mine isn't for going to work. It's a weekend toy for the back roads and for when we get a track day with my dad and his Ducati 1198 Penigale. I just love the light bikes that you can pin it and throw into corners. And I'm not going pro, since I'm not that good and too old, so I just wanted something that wasn't too crazy but that you could beat the crap out of and have a blast on. I made the right decision.

I just got my 2021 ninja 650 yesterday. Good mileage, and the compatibility with Rideology is a nice bonus.
I had a 650 , over a decade ago, returned to riding this year, For my first bike back I got a 2022 Ninja 400, after a few months and being re familiarized with riding I also got a 05 cbr600rr, which is what I ride more often then not now, but , I love the 400, it almost feels like a cruiser , compared to the seating position of my 600, i also do remember loving the 650 back in the day too though so I guess it depends on what you want , both are great bikes! And super fun! Ride safe bros ! Great video! Oh and the 400 gets crazy good gas mileage lol , my 400 gets 68-70 mpg , my 600 gets about 40 , so yeah there's that too lol

We were watching road signs and landmarks trying to find you... where you were riding looks EXACTLY like Northern Oklahoma in the spring... turns out you're not in OK, but the houses, churches, everything looks like it would have been any town where I live. Too bad, would have loved to hit some curves with you. I won't say where you live, first video, and I don't want to "dox" your approx location. But beautiful place to ride! I was planning on getting a 650, but after sitting on both, I felt that the 400 was a better fit. I was at the point where I had almost no motorcycle experience, and was deathly afraid of riding, but really wanted to learn, so a smaller motorcycle was a better for me.
i have a 400 and i love riding it and its great to learn as a beginner.
You probably outgrew it in the first month. I went 650 and I love it. I do wish I went bigger but for the price point it’s amazing.
I think the Ninja 250 would be a great starter bike for individuals with zero motorcycle experience.

I traded in my Honda Super Blackbird for a Ninja 650 and the difference is unbelieveable - 193KG compared to 257KG , super light steering and more , one of the best if not THE best I`ve ever ridden , highly recommended.

I have a 2020 Ninja 650 and absolutely love it. Back when I bought it I contemplated for days between the 400 and 650, but finally ended up settling with the 650. Just recently got it flashed and tuned and what a difference it makes overall, especially with the choppiness of the throttle.
This is a great comparison and exactly what I was looking forward to when I purchased my bike a couple years ago.

How much for a tune and what kind of shops would do that?
@@Roblessed722 I can’t really speak for this guy but from what I know definitely try to find a motercycle shop with a dyno around you. Most flashes should cost 250-400$ but could be less or more. It may be hard to find a shop so you could always just send your ecu into a mail in shop like Moore mafia but it’s a little risky. Having the bike on the dyno is the best choice.

What does “ got flashed “ mean?
I’ve got 2 sons that want to get into biking. Handling and pragmatism really led me to the 400. I’ll be buying 3, so insurance, mileage, and entry level simplicity tip the scales. Great video and review!

I appreciate it! I use a purple panda mic with a Tascam recorder. I have two covers on the microphone and then tuck it into my helmet padding!

Dame! lol now I am really torn between which one to get. I want the 650 so I will not have to upgrade later and I love the display but the 400 weight and movability and control is very good for a first bike. I guess I will have to do more research and test ride to really choose. thanks for the video great job.

I have 2014 ninja 650...its a great bike, like a sport bike and a dirt bike had a baby.
Im a shorter rider and i appreciate how skinny the seat area is,as well as the more upright seating position. The 650 to me is a modern jack of all trades ,master of none.

I've 2018 Ninja 650m It's better in every way to my 1968 BSA Hornet 650, particularly with its fairing. But my Triumph 765RS out shine it in every respect. Lol. Main fault with Ninja 650 is its throttle. I wish Kawasaki would put ride by wire throttle on it. Also a little more power would be appreciated. Perhaps raise red line to 9500 rpm. Ninja 400 which I also have is very easy to ride and lively. Max power is adequate for every occasion, and it's very light and nimble. If I could own only two bikes, I'd keep the 765RS and the Ninja 400+ the Ducati 950 SuperSport which is not my most loved riding bike, yet its my love for it. BTW I'd recommend putting YSS products on the Ninja, replacing OEM parts.
Im glad I stumbled on this video. I never thought of the ninja 400 as a stepping stone to a supersport. I own the same 2021 Ninja 650 in grey and I absolutely love it. Did a yoshi exhaust and fender eliminator. I love the comfort and power of it. In regards to your tune, are you running a power commander? I haven't tuned my bike yet but after hearing how pleased you are with yours, you have me seriously considering it! Lol Are there any other mods you would consider for top end power like changing sprockets?
Ninja 400 stock has +2 kmph top speed in every gear than Ninja 650 stock
What should you be looking to spend fairly on a used model? I get there 5 to 10k but how much used?
I just started riding motorcycles and got the 400 bout 2 weeks ago and it gets confused sometimes by people for the 650 a good bit of time. And I love it extremely. Ride it everyday for work. Definitely want to make it louder
Congratulations, and welcome to the motorcycle world! Don't just get exhaust to make it louder... Get a full exhaust for Performance, and it will naturally be better sounding! I have a Ninja 300 that performs like a 400 with a Leo Vince FULL exhaust system (among several other performance goodies), it sounds mean! (Pehaps too loud, but very barrel-chested, like a Chinook Helicopter at certain rpms). Slip-ons (basically muffler) will make it sound deeper, and sheds a few pounds, but no horsepower gain. A full system costs more and will need to have the bike tuned, but you get even lighter weight, gains in power, significantly louder/deeper exhaust note. Then there's exhaust wrap which will keeps the heat in the exhaust, forcing gasses to escape faster at low rpms, without extra backpressure. That gives you additional low-end torque, whereas a free flowing exhaust without wrap just has horsepower gains in midrange and high rpms. I have mo powaa at all RPMs, and it shoots flames! The 400 performane gains will be bigger than the 300s because of all the restrictions on it. There's pros and cons to all systems, reply if you want to hear more- I didn't mean to bombard you! Have fun riding the cool little 400!
@@jeladsnikpoh1289 no I really appreciate that. I have been looking for an exhaust for a little bit since as of right now it sounds like a moped 😂. In all honesty I would like it to perform better as well so why not wait until I am able to get the full exhaust system. I do love the slip on Leo Vince sound, so how does that compare to the full exhaust?
@@mjsoraw141 I bought my bike with 2000 miles on it 6 years ago, still love riding it! It had a really nice smooth sounding Yoshimura slip on, I promptly replaced it with Leo Vince full exhaust for mo powaa, then heat wrapped it for more torque. From what I understand the Leo sounds similar in both slip-on and full. Full is significantly louder and more full-bodied. Higher highs, but especially deeper lows that you really feel. There are plenty of pops on deacceleration, much of which is from my aftermarket tune (required for full exhaust, but backfires can be tuned out, I've learned to love them!) I bought Leo Full because it had the highest dino gains- Leo's full exhaust was a bargain, about the same price as other slip-ons, and has great quality and good sound. I'd say it has more high tones and louder than the smooth Leo Vince full exhaust, and weighs less (6lbs for full system!). A little more rowdy, I've learned to love it! My 300 has a very similar sound to your 400, so expect a very deep sound at low rpms (compared to 4cyl sportbikes) not as smooth, but smoother than a 'cruiser'. Gets much smoother as the rumble turns into the 'howl' at rpms! At times has a deep thump like a couple Chinook Helicopters flying over, but more of a angry howl at mid rpms, with a raucous 'blam-blam' if you snatch the throttle quickly. Potential downside to wrapping it is potential long term rusting of exhaust system. I haven't had ANY issues whatsoever. Only more torque and power, flames firing out upon deacceleration after riding real hard (everybody thinks it's awesome), I love the whole bike, gnarly exhaust, 70+mpg, reliability, looks, performance (I just got back from some much needed Ninja-therapy before I replied to this. 100mph in the Kentucky Twisties, how fun!

I think it's probably about the same. I never had an issue with clearance so I never really noticed 😅

I wonder how this compares with the ZX-25R. Defo a weird comparison but due to the similar speeds and hp I think it would be a super interesting match up.
For a first time adult rider (haven't rode a motorcycle since I was a preteen and it was a dirtbike) would the 650 still be a good choice? Also should I factor my own weight into what bike I should buy? If I'm under 200 pounds should I stick with the 400 or would I still be fine with the 650.
The Ninja 650 is absolutely an option, no doubt. It's a forgiving bike especially with dirt experience (even years ago experience).
You can choose either one and be happy/safe. Boils down to ergos/how you're mainly going to use it. I'm all about the light weight and flickable aspects so 400 all day, ymmv.

Bought the 650 as my firt bike but that's becuz i have experience with bikes when i was a kid becuz my parents are obsessed with quad and dirt bikes at 5'6 im half footed over all it is a great bike and has the sweet spot interms of power my cousin bought the 400 since he dont have any experience and it is actually adequate bike the power is definitely there but i do think it is light most will think it is an advantage but a truck passing in the other lane will definitely affect ur balance i dont experience that with ny 650
I thought about alot of different bikes but realistically to start it was ninja 400 650 and fz07. More I researched I went with the ninja 400 cause I felt it looked more like a normal sport bike and I liked how it reved and how light it is. Like even top speed is about the same between the 2 and the 0-60 is only half a second faster. Now that's not nothing but wasn't enough to make me go to the 650 when the power was only reason I would of went over the 400.
Yah top speed being 120 turns me away but I mean I'd be scared to top it out anyway
Yup I agree.. 0-60 is fast enough regardless, and top speed is not anything ima ever reach anyway cause thats scary lol. Just want a fun bike enough to go on highway but easy to maneuver through city, and if i can learn to do tight turns etc with it. Easier on a lighter weight bike im assumingg.. than I’ll learn better to maneuver it with a smaller bike vs heavier

buy a slightly used 400...put a flash, air filter, stacks, an exhaust, SAI block off, and HD clutch springs. You'll be at 55 ish whp with a 360 lb wet weight, almost identical performance with cheaper insurance, better on fuel, 60ish lbs less weight...if you gotta have a 650 class go MT-07/R7
@Thomas B The 650 does not look like the zx6r. It's actually ugly compared to the zx6r. Short little tail piece on it and big tall gas tank. It's ugly . I owned the 07 650R and imo that generation looked better than the new ones
The mod list here would cost significantly more than a "slightly used 400" that's just foolish at that point because you still maintain that 400 resale value. Spend more for the bigger bike in the first place, and you'll get more back when you outgrow it.
Throwing mods on it to squeak out the extra performance is part of the experience.
@@planetphatness - - Plus, the light weight remains with all it's perks. I love the 400s which are a blast stock and wouldn't feel the need to drop the extra coin for more hp unless I was dedicating it to track (or had expendable extra cash).
Soooo I am planning to buy the ninja 400 but I have second thoughts on the ninja 650... in my country the currency conversion from usd to guy $ is 5000 = 1 million guy $ so the 650 is around 1.6 to 2.1 or more... I need advice because my budget is 1 mil💀, is the 650 worth it than the 400? Or the 400 ok to deal with?
I started on a ninja 250, also haven rode friends bikes that were 500+ in cc, I loved my 2022 ninja 650. But a mechanic wrote it off in an accident so now the dealers giving me a 2024 ninja 650. I'm keen to try out the traction control as I always feel sketchy riding on wet roads
Im a beginner who's doing his A license on a Z650 right now.
I've always dreamed of owning a Ninja but can't decide which one to get, the 400 or 650.
Seems like the 650 doesn't get much love compared to the 400, but the 650 is closer to Z650 I've been already driving on and it's only 1700€ more.

I am a recent retiree at 62 years old and still deciding which one to get. I am 5'8" tall, 190 lbs, fair physical condition, but haven't ridden a bike in 35 years. I occasionally ride a scooter but that's about it! Money is no issue. I will be using the bike to basically tour around the Philippine Islands. I don't plan to upgrade to a larger displacement nor have plan to race. I am leaning towards getting the Ninja 650 with ABS and Traction Control that I believe the 400 does not have. What do you think I should get?
I need that 650. I don’t want an absolute speed beast like the super sports, but I still want solid power. Also I love doing highway rides.

I am a 74 year novelist. I am currently writing a spy mystery novel based on Motocross and sports bikes. I have never ridden a bike before but after doing the research on the sport I would loved to have started riding motocross as a young man. I was a college athlete in the 1960s and 70s and played some professionally for a few years. My reflexes were always super fast and still, to this day, remain fast. My eyesight is good, though I wear bifocal glasses and i have great peripheral vision. Most people think I look at least 10 - 15 years younger than I am. I walk a little slower than i did in my youth. That being said, I am in great shape according to my physician. That is the back ground to my question all of you. I plan to take the MSF course this coming spring with the hope that I can actually buy and ride a motorcycle. I have come down to the choice of either the Ninja 400 or the Ninja 650. My desire is to drive the local roads here New Hampshire. I don’t have to commute anywhere as other than writing I am retired. I will just be doing fun rides and I do not plan on riding much on the interstates…but would like to be safe on them when i do use one. I am 6 foot tall and weigh 200 lbs even. What are your thoughts and suggestions for me? I was leaning to the 400 as I do not feel i will need the extra power of the 650 however talking with several people at bike shops they feel because of my height and weight the 650 would be a better fit. I like the sport bike look. Since this will most likely be the one and only bike I will be purchasing your suggestions is very much appreciated. Thanks for your thoughts.
I mean do you count the Honda CB400 Super Four? It is a 399 i4 revs to 13k and generates a claimed 55 horsepower. Unfortunately it wasn’t sold in the US.
i have the same bike & i wouldn't trade it for any other bike it's very easy to maneuver around in town & in tight corners & it would make a very good bike to pass the safety course to get ur F endorsement
650 is a amazing bike get that 100% alot of power for a beginner to keep you happy for a few years
Absolutely love my 400 2021 never get rid of it liked it way more than a 650 and the 650 was just heavy and to be honest for an extra four grand not worth the extra tiny bit of power you got on the top end

How'd you remove the stickers? For example, I like the Ninja 400 colors but not the stickers on them. (Ninja 450 this year looks sick tho).
Both are great bikes,.no one is better than other, but very different, depends what you need. 650 has a lot of torque @ low rpm, don't need to shipf up reving high, 400 needs to rev before shifting, so make your choice.

The Ninja 400 is a tad bit better with highway commuting because of the highest displacement but in all honesty, both bikes are so good you can’t really go wrong with either bike. My only advice would be to try and test ride each and go with whatever feels more natural for you! Cheers!

Great video! I feel so torn between the two. This will be my first motorcycle. I really wanted a Husky Svartpilen and/or Vitpilen and I was able to finally sit on the huskies which I hated the way they felt😭. I sat on a Ninja 650 and a 400. I really loved how the 650 felt and I had a this is it moment which I was so surprised… BUT the price difference is a factor. I just really like the seating position and handlebars on the 650 vs 400 Ninja.
What did you end up getting?
@@Vallavanat No dealer I talked to could confirm a Ninja 650 ABS, and only non-ABS models were available. I put a deposit on one, and the dealer couldn’t give me an answer on arrival times and said it may be in 2023… my local dealer had a Z400 in stock. They were so awesome and put it together for me on the spot. I bought it! I am very happy with the purchase; so far I have 300 miles on her. She has plenty of power. I also realize outside of the MSF course I have so much to learn!

Of the two choices, the 400 is a sportier all around funner bike. Although not released yet, wait for the 2022/2023 ninja 700r coming out in the next year. Going to be the competitor against the aprilia rs660 and Yamaha r7 and it’s going to be magical.
I'm trying to figure out if I should get my first bike on the 400 or thr 650 but I'm unsure which bike my height would suit. I'm 6,2.
I’m a 6’2 female and I sat on a 650 today. I’d definitely see if you can find any dealers or people who have the bikes just to sit on and feel how small they are. My feet were flat on the ground and my legs had a little bend to them while getting a feel for the bike. But I will say that it wasn’t too unbearable but again everyone’s feel is different. I hope you find your bike!

I have one too! Other than being jerky in low speeds it’s amazing. It’s like a hybrid that gives you the comfort of a cruiser with the playfulness of a sport bike.

Hello would like to ask which is better for complete beginner. I just got my license and decided to go with kawasaki bikes and stuck between 400 and 650. After getting used to riding thinking of upgrading to ZX-6R.
I think the Ninja 400 would offer the most direct comparison to a zx6r as far as riding style. I would look for a used ninja 400 and start with that until you’re ready to move up

I just bought a 2024 Ninja 650, and I don't agree with comparing modified bikes, especially with fuel mapping/ throttle changes. Those are "simple" but not for new riders. I would honestly say this is more a review for experienced riders, as you've done modifications. I would argue the 650 is almost TOO jumpy from factory floor, for beginners. All the torque is down low to mid from the factory. It is very easy for me to go from 0 - 100 mph very quickly, and I haven't done ANY fuel/ecu/throttle mapping or modifications. I have changed my exhaust and air filter, but so far, all that's done is made the bike even MORE jumpy, and I am going to use the Dyno Commander VI to fix all of this, but from factory floor to the road, I would recommend new riders specifically get the 400 unless they have prior experience
As someone who is a beginner I got the ninja 400 last December let me tell you something…….get the 650 instead TRUST me you’ll want something a bit faster. Hasn’t been a year for me and I already want something faster and I think I should’ve gotten the 650 instead
Given that speed limits where I live are 55mph or less (except for expressway which is 75mph) I find the light agility of my 2021 400 exceptional. It is great on acceleration 0-60.
Only reason I would like to move up to the 650 is it would handle expressway riding more easily. The little 400 is a little strained maintaining those speeds for any length of time, it’s light weight is easily pushed around by wind especially near semi traffic. Half an hour at 75mph on the 400 is very buzzy and even with a very relaxed grip my hands get numb.
But I just can’t see justification for needing a faster bike. Unless your one of those who ignore all laws and drive any speed you want. Or perhaps you want something for track days. No judgement, but as a father with a teenage daughter about to get her license, all the speed demons that run red lights, weave recklessly through traffic and have no regard for the safety of others make me incredibly nervous for her.
VFR 400 is the best starter bike ever. I wish I kept it. I went from a BWS 50 CC Scooter to the VFR400R. Never looked back.
My opinion if you're a fairweather rider (toy not mode of transport ) get the 400 but if you're a serious rider trust me you'll VERY soon get tired of the 400 so I'll get the 650 and limit the power till I'm confident cos at least you can grow into the full potential rather than outgrow and get bored of the 400 and get overtaken by big engine scooters 😢😮

I know i will grow out of the 400 but the 650 is just a little too much for me as a beginner. I don't know if i should make the jump to the 650. I wanna die too dont get me wrong just not splattered on the pavement

No, not really. It has some vibration but nothing too crazy in my opinion
