Deforest Kelly was hit really hard after filming the scene involving the euthanizing of his dad in the movie. They wrapped filming of that segment and he went missing for the remainder of the day as it hit him so personally hard.
“What does God need with a starship?” is still my favorite quote from the TOS movies.

Yep - especially given Shatner wrote and directed the film too! It was his project for better and for worse and I think he called on a lot of his own deep feelings in it (which is what I personally admire in it), including that rather strange prophecy. Hope the guys touch on this in the full reaction. They didn't mention Shatner directing in the credits unless I missed it
@@ER-ec4uq His book talks about how he wanted to do a lot of things that would've made it better, but between props issues and funding issues, it changed quite a bit.
The line "I will die alone", is kind of sad in a meta way, now the other two are gone.
I like that Sybok isn’t a villain but an Antagonist, likeable and charismatic but more misguided than evil. And Laurence Luckinbill really gives a great performance.
He's strangely cut from the cloth of the kinds of figures you see in The Bible. Abraham, Moses. He's on a religious mission. And yes, Laurence is great. He's probably the best part of this movie, neck and neck with spending time with Kirk, Spock, and Bones.

Luckinbill's casting and the score, are about the only two good things about this film.
And the scene where McCoy and Spock confront their pain.
@@JMUDocYeah, that Scene is actually fantastic. For all this movies‘ problems, for once it manages to pull itself together. For about ten minutes, just about everything is on point. For my money, one of the greatest scenes of all of Trek.

I wonder if the writer of Persona 5 Royal’s Third Semester Arc had been inspired by V and This Side of Paradise in some way. Sybok reminds me a lot of that arc’s antagonist in being someone who isn’t actually evil in their goals but his desire to remove suffering and pain as a psychological concept is one to oppose or would that be the other way?
It's not the best Trek movie. But everyone remembers the bad things when there are still some genuinely good and fun moments in the movie that make it worth a rewatch every now and then.
This film really emphasizes the warmth and more contemporary personalities the TOS crew holds
The first 1/4 of this film is probably the best. I especially love the irony of the helmsman and Navigator getting lost! 🤣
There's so much about this film that I genuinely love. It wears its heart on its sleeve, revels in emotion and pathos. I also love that it doesn't end with a ship battle or a fist fight. The antagonist realizes he was wrong, changes his heart, and does something about it. What could be more Trek than that?
It has a lot of problems. I'm sure folks will mention that its budget was slashed & it's a shadow of what they planned to do. It's tonally awkward and some scenes really don't work. The Scotty/Uhura thing is so out of nowhere.
But I actually really like the movie. I've come around to it over the years, for sure.
I think the biggest issue was there was no one to rein in Shatner. He's fantastic, but he needs a strong director reining him in. When he's in charge, you get the cheesy excess. But V definitely has its moments.
There were minor changes that could have elevated this film, they kind of glossed over the cult leader and a couple scenes of him and his Vulcan fanatics communing with ‘god’ would have been some important character building. Also the Romulan dignitary could have been better written as a inexperienced self important functionary who doesn’t realize this position isn’t the honor she thinks it is. Maybe a couple lines about what happened to the old ambassador, maybe he offed himself in shame and despair.

Kirk: "They were humanitarians and statesmen, and they had a dream. A dream that became a reality and spread throughout the stars, a dream that made Mr. Spock and me brothers."
Garth of Izar: "Mr. Spock, do you consider Captain Kirk and yourself brothers?"
Spock: "Captain Kirk speaks somewhat figuratively and with undue emotion. However, what he says is logical and I do, in fact, agree with it."
Garth was the second best TOS villain, behind Khan. Steven Ihnat did a fantastic job portraying a maniacal psychopath. Very underrated episode …. and Yvonne Craig along as well.
I'm convinced Kirk's pain would be having to let Edith Keeler die.
Or maybe losing his son David? What he could have done differently to prevent it from happening.
Kirk had years to mourn over what might have been with Edith. He barely got to know his son.
In either case we need our pain. Overcoming it reminds us of the progress we have made and the lessons learned on the journey.
Not seeing Kirk's pain is the right choice... but if they did choose to reveal it then a circling back to TOS' best and most famous episode would have been the best thing ever. The movie tries really hard to link back to the show, it's literally the "final frontier" - it would have been so great.
Or Kirk remembering Rayna and the pain of her loss.
I think you're all forgetting Kirk's only real love, the original Enterprise.
The unfortunate thing about the scene with Bones is you can’t truly appreciate it until you’ve reached an age where life begins taking from you more than it gives.
It's one of the few scenes that actually worked for me. Both on a production and emotional side.
That whole scene is some of the best of Star Trek to me.
And "age" isn't really a requirement. Nor is it even experiencing those events personally. Seeing others go through it should be enough for anyone who has real empathy. And the age thing of course can hit people at any age be it a child of 6 or a person of 90, as the life struggles each person goes through are different for each.
Star Trek 6 is marvelous, and a proper send-off for the original crew!
For it's fault Kirk demanding proof from God is the most Kirk thing ever.
The only film in the series that focuses on the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
I’m my opinion, that’s the dynamic that elevates Star Trek from generic space adventure to epic franchise.
No matter what others say, I like this film. 😊👍
So do I. It's not perfect, but really, the way its budget was affected while being filmed is what caused its worst elements
It's a shame paramount haven't granted Shatners request to do a directors cut on the film, at least getting the special effects in order would massively improve the film and would go someway towards his original vision for the movie

The admiral is played by Harve Bennett. Also, the yeoman that took Kirk’s coat is William Shatner’s daughter.
Weird how that seems somehow wrong... or maybe I'm the only one who thinks so.
You guys are going to love Star Trek 6, Also the greatest line ever "What Does god need with a Starship?" The bigest compliant people have with this movie is the Special effects.
I think that there's so much more they could have done with the metaphysical-mystical stuff in this one. When I think about it, it's amazing and daring that they went as far as they did. Hollywood doesn't like to question religion or God. I would imagine that one of the biggest frustrations for Shatner and others was that they could not take this theme as deep as they wanted to.
My biggest complaint is the horrible direction and writing.
VFX and the half baked story didnt help. Shatner tried but he was stuck between a rock and hard place in many ways. Directing he did ok in my book. It just sucks ILM wasnt available to handle the VFX and he was forced to use a group that had no business doing a film like this.
"Damn you, sir. You will try!" Is actually my favorite Spock line of the films.
I have never cared about special effects that much. The writing is what's terrible. They're trying too hard to give the cast more character development and some of it is okay, but quite a lot of it is corny and bad.
This movie had more scenes with Kirk, Spock, and Bones together than any other. Say what you want, Bill knew to keep the three together.
I'm right there with you on this movie. We get to spend time with these characters, this is a gift. That said, it was a disappointment when it was released in 1989. I read the novelization of the movie a week before and it had lots of little details that filled in the story in a satisfying way. I recommend reading it to anyone who wants a better version of this story.

Dubbing Nichelle Nichols in the fan dance scene was just unforgivable.

I noticed this time not only did Alex well up, but Josh did too. Gentlemen it was clear you were both glassy eyed. This what this series does to us men, a time honoured testament to the love we have of these 3 characters that no other ST show was able to repeat. TOS is the best.
Nimoy: When I directed ‘Star Trek IV’, I got a magnificent performance out of Bill, because I respected him so much.

5. Ever since Final Frontier’s release in 1989, two elements of the film have received universal acclaim from critics and fans. One is the score by composer Jerry Goldsmith, returning to the Star Trek franchise ten years after scoring TMP. Ron Jones had modeled his Klingon theme for TNG after Goldsmith’s from TMP, but in this film Goldsmith was able to bring back the original theme in all its glory.
The other acclaimed element of Final Frontier is Laurence Luckinbill’s performance as Sybok. Luckinbill was, in a sense, a member of the Star Trek family even before Final Frontier: he is the son-in-law of Lucille Ball, the comedy legend and Hollywood mogul without whose early support Star Trek would never have existed. He is also the maternal uncle of Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the creators of "The Matrix" franchise. Luckinbill has performed one-man shows in the roles of Theodore Roosevelt, Clarence Darrow, Ernest Hemingway, and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
William Shatner happened across a TV version of the Johnson show late one night and squinted at the end credits to see who the actor was; he then offered Luckinbill the role of Sybok. Laurence Luckinbill is still living and is now 89 years old, but, oddly enough, Final Frontier was his final role in a feature film. If this was due to the film’s poor critical reputation, that is a great shame, since viewers generally agree that Luckinbill is one of the best things about it. (See especially the moment when Kirk tells Sybok he is mad, and the flicker of doubt on his face as he says, “Am I?”)
Yeah, in TNG it's not really a theme for the Klingons, but you can hear Goldsmith's Klingon theme kinda being "quoted" or alluded to at times.
Spock having a brother was introduced the same way as hi Father, Mother and fiance got introduced, when he had to tell them so in a way it's not really a retco
Star trek V is the most TOS episode feel to the movies, it really feels like just another day aboard the Enterprise. It doesn't have a strong villain and I'd say the last act is where it all falls down. A stronger finish would have saved this film. I don't think it's as bad as many do but it is lacking in a few areas.
This is why I say tracking down the comic adaption that was based on the shooting script is key, because what was intended and what we got are two totally different things
The actor at the start, the bald desert guy, is the same actor who played Morgan Earp (the one who killed Chekov) in the TOS ep Spectre of the Gun!
Fun fact about this film, Kelley was getting rather fragile at this point and both Nimoy and Shatner were extremely cautious when getting him to run down the mountain during the climax - despite all there worries Deforest Kelley was the fasted one out of all of them.
Watching all of Star Trek in release order is a huge plus for us ST reaction fans.
Yes, I think I've only now realized that Khitomer was first named in TNG as part of Worf's backstory. But I won't say more than that here.
I 100% stand by the assertion that Star Trek V is NOT the worst of the TOS films. That title goes to The Motion Picture. I can at least watch FF and have fun laughing with/at it. It’s at least enjoyable in some of the choices. MP? I fall asleep and when I wake up, nothing happened.
Is FF as good as II - IV? No, but I do enjoy watching it. However, I am STOKED to see your reaction to Undiscovered Country. THAT is an under-appreciated gem of a film!

I heard the negative reactions to this film and skipped seeing it in a theater. Months later, a coworker and I were on a business trip and caught it on our hotel room's cable. We both had the same reaction: "That wasn't bad. It wasn't as good as the other Star Trek movies, but it was far from bad." Our low expectations and seeing it for free probably helped.

I heard the negative reactions from "real Trek fans" to ENTERPRISE, the JJ films, and DISCOVERY, and avoided watching all of those, and then when I finally watched them, I found myself thinking "What is all the complaining about?" Especially re DISCOVERY, which has just been KILLED by so-called "knowledgable fans."

The actor who played the officer on the view screen telling Kirk about the situation is actually real life producer Harve Bennett who produced "The Wrath of Khan" and other Star Trek movies.
God I had to stop the reaction to post how great it is to see someone online genuinely enjoying this movie. I’m so sick of decades of people parroting that it is the worst Trek movie when they either haven’t seen it in a long time or aren’t taking into account all the movies. This film has the most TOS vibe of them all and has great interactions with the big 3. I would watch this ANYDAY over some others I won’t mention due to spoilers.
This movie is fun AF. It’s not Wrath of Khan but it’s always an enjoyable watch with lots of memorable scenes.

This movie has a lot of heart warming scenes with the big three and Scotty in particular. That's why I like it quite a lot. On the downside several scenes feel like trying to turn the movie into Star Wars, whereas I like my Star Trek to stay true to itself. There is no need for Star Trek to try and become a Star Wars imitation.
Then stay away from Kurtzman Trek and JJ Trek, they're subpar Star Wars rip-offs

It's actually Star Wars fanatics that are trying to annex Star Trek with their beloved Wars.
Star Wars is like a religion for them and Kurtsman, Jar Jar Abrams, etc have always hated how Trek always gets more respect than Star Wars, so they see Trek as threat to their ideology, so they've been sabotaging Trek to convert it into Star Wars.
Not going to lie, unironically, this is my favorite of the Star Trek films, knowing all the B.S. that happened between the writers strikes that derailed pre-production and the teamsters strike that happened during filming, along with Paramount slicing the budget during production because they crapped the bed with a bunch of films in 1987 and 1988 helps gives this film its charm.
I also highly encourage that you seek out the comic book adaption which was based on the shooting script

Star Trek V is far better than people claim it is; this is not because all the criticism given to it are not justified, just the story itself is far better than what Paramount allowed to be realized. This is one where reading the novelization before seeing the films helps in appreciating the film.

I see the novel and the film as two different things, that's how much deeper and better the book is. Which is often the case since a book can do so much more than a few hours of film. That's probably the biggest flaw of this movie, it didn't have time to develop a solid believable plot to sell itself. But if you just take it as presented, there's lots of fun moments and great lines to quote. "What does God need with a starship?" is a very common referenced one.
Yup - when I first saw this in 89 at age 8, the movie, soundtrack, book, and amt Enterprise model building all merged into one experience, and has always been near and dear. ST odd# movies rule!!! Seriously. I rank top to bottom: I-III-V-II-IV-VI

Always maintained this is the best “Star Trek” film, as it perfectly captures the magic of TOS. Sure the others stand out for different reasons, perhaps are ‘better films’ , but they’re directed and budgeted for a mass audience, so tended towards conflict with evil villains etc..
That opening theme by Jerry Goldsmith is beautiful. One of my favorite tracks from my favorite composer.
For 6 degrees of separation (or a lot less), Sybok is played by Laurence Luckinbill, son-in-law of Lucille Ball, who is the reason TOS was given a second chance after the failed pilot. She is credited as the one (among her own talents as actress/comedienne/producer), but for her, the phenom Star Trek became wouldn't exist. She was the "Lu" of Desilu Productions.
I always wished Martin Landau could have played Sybok (not that it was ever considered, just my own preference). I would have loved to see him and Nimoy on screen together and he wouldn't have had to play emotionless (his reason for turning down the Spock role).
The reason Kirk yells "SHOOT HIM!" is because the homemade weapon has no stun setting. Your only options are "shoot" or "don't shoot." Unfortunately, the dialog doesn't really make that clear.

Shatner wrote the script and he based it on televangelists.
It was the favored nation clause in Shatner and Nimoy's contracts that had been put in place early in the series. Shatner exercised it and this is the result. According to reports neither Kelley nor Nimoy was willing to play having totally fallen under Sybock's control.They werequite happy with the horses though because both of them had been in many westerns before StarTrek.

I like the six TOS movies as a fun little miniseries of feature-length episodes. Number 5 is that fun episode that's kind of nuts.
As far as I remember, originally the "pain" scene would have ended with Spock and McCoy genuinely joining up with Sybok. It would've resulted in Kirk standing all alone, betrayed by everybody. Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley strongly protested, resulting in the change to the scene and, presumably, the finale on Sha Ka Ree.

8. The Earth space probe which Captain Klaa destroys is not a Voyager, but Pioneer 10, one of the predecessors of the Voyagers, which NASA launched in 1972 to visit Jupiter.
The scene in which Kirk returns to the bridge of the Enterprise after leaving Earth features two notable cameos. Shatner’s daughter, Melanie Shatner, plays the yeoman who takes Kirk’s jacket from him; in a joke too subtle for most viewers to catch, she spends the rest of the scene wandering around the bridge with it, since there is nowhere on the bridge to hang it up. “Bob,” the admiral who informs Kirk of the Enterprise’s assignment, is Harve Bennett making a cameo in what would prove to be the last Star Trek film he produced.
As one would expect, Nichelle Nichols originally did her own singing in the fan dance scene; she was outraged when another performer redubbed her vocals. Loughery originally proposed this scene as a joke; it went on to become the scene out of all thirteen Star Trek films which fans hate the most.
Because Final Frontier was filming simultaneously with TNG Season 2, there was a shortage of Klingon boots for the holographic Klingons at Worf’s Rite of Ascension ceremony in “The Icarus Factor,” forcing some of the actors to wear "Planet of the Apes" boots. (This was the anecdote to which I alluded by including the phrase “[SPOILER REDACTED]” in my comment on that episode; I did not want to give away that Final Frontier features Klingons.) Wil Wheaton snuck onto the movie set from the TNG stages; Shatner was rude to him but later apologized.
The problem with the deck numbering in the turboshaft sequence is one of the most widely ridiculed continuity errors in all of Star Trek. Unlike most such errors, it is immediately, glaringly apparent even to a casual viewer, giving an unpleasant impression of sloppiness. The “joke” of Scotty banging his head into the bulkhead is reprehensible.
I can think of scenes I dislike far more than anything in this film.
I have heard the theory that this scene with the Pioneer probe was a mockery of The Motion Picture - notice the screams?
During the turboshaft scene, look behind Spock as he's flying down. You will see the shadow of the arm holding him up from behind, traveling along the thick black groove in the wall. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it :P
When I was young I used to watch practical effects scenes to try to figure out how they were done. This one was very easy on my eight year old brain!
I would have loved an entire movie of just the original series crew camping. Cut back and forth between their comedic adventures. Just an entire two hours of character and world building between people we've seen at that point for 20 years. Will Sulu and Chekhov find their way out of the forest? Will Uhura and Scotty find romance at Yellowstone? Can Kirk find something taller to climb? Will Bones get more drunk or more angry? Will Spock learn how to sing? There's your movie!!

I don't get the hate towards this one. It's just fun. It's our TOS crew with a fun story. Good fun, good jokes, good action, good acting, good script. Maybe it's not amazing, it doesn't give us something new or outside-the-envelope, but hey, it's fun! :) The campfire scenes are my favourite :)
The scene where Uhura contacts Sulu and Chekov down on the surface of Earth had a very strange effect on me when I first saw it.
Cell phones were just starting to be more common place and watching her literally reach out and contact Sulu and Chekov no matter where there were on the planet, just blew my mind now that such technology was literally right around the corner. It never occurred to me in all the years of watching Star Trek just how much the communicator was going to change our world once it finally became a reality. For the first time I was able envision just how that little device was going to alter our world.
Interesting. I never had this effect, because to me they were just basically walkie-talkies, only lots more powerful. That was already a common concept. In fact, as a kid, when I first saw examples of mobile phones, at first I thought them as something like a walkie-talkie, and less like a phone.
I've been waiting for this one, and you guys did NOT disappoint!
Seeing you guys enjoy the character moments was so fun, this is the one Tos film that feels the closest to the original show.
And that scene with Bones's pain was one of the best scenes in all the films! 😊
If you dig around, you'll find an excellent fan edit of this thing called "In Thy Image". They pared away all the dross and silliness, and ended with a really good 60-minute episode of the original show. I highly recommend it. :)
On the contrary (or maybe I just am contrary) I'd like to see an edit that gets rid of the part where they go looking for "God" leave the silly things in and Sybok lives.

That is one of the very few episodes of TNG I actively dislike. Most of the bad ones I mostly feel apathy towards. That one, though... yeah...
In addition to just being enjoyable, this one really fits into its place in canon well, as a connector between IV and VI. The characters seem like they are in a planned piece of episodic storytelling leading to VI.
This one has a lot of interaction scenes with the 7 characters we all grown to love. In the 1980s there was a growth of tv evangelists and they were under pressure to pay the tv bills and all the fallout back then. This gave Shatner the.ideas for the movie.🎉
It's nice to see you guys appreciate Star Trek V, it's my favorite.
One of shatner's daughters makes a cameo appearance during the bridge scene where they are ordered to go to Nimbus III. She's the yomen who hands Kirk his jacket. Despite this movie's flaws, I do appreciate and like how they tackle the subject of life and death and faith and pain and how they are all connected. They help shape us as individuals and our identity. As Kirk says "the things we carry with us makes us who we are. I don't want my pain taken away! I need my pain!"
I once walked up (not climbed ) a Mountain while listening to the Jerry Goldsmith score of the Yosemite and Shakare parts of the score. Whatever you think about the movie, this is one of Goldsmiths best scores.

Too bad they apparently lost the recordings or something. The official soundtrack of ST5 has some remnants of sound effects and dialog. They did their best of editing them out, but were not entirely succesful. This is very unusual.
All I can say about this movie is that our heroes willingly participate in a mutiny. It's not mind control, they make that clear in the movie. There are plenty of bad ST movies, but this is the only one that I genuinely find to be offensive. And if that sounds overly dramatic, I'm not alone. Both Kelley and Nimoy originally refused to be in the movie because their characters were supposed to be mutineers as well, and only signed on after Shatner agreed to change that part of script. The other regulars, unfortunately, were not so lucky.
Agreed. It pissed me off. There's no way they would've turned on Kirk like that.

This film was incredible fun, it was solid Trek; philosophical question of a higher being, philosophical understanding of human pain or regret, a Sci Fi alien entity of great power, political tribulations with Kling Ons, a lot of action, and most of all friendship and ADVENTURE.
All the loud elements of Star Trek.

(This film was released 4-6 months after William Shatner went on SNL and did the skit "Trek nerds, get a life!" and the sensitive babies lashed out at him for a harmless joke by trying to hate on this film since it was directed by Shatner. Ever since people have been influenced by that FALSE trend, it's genuinely a fine film).

ST5 is incredibly flawed, but it also has the best moments for the Kirk Spock McCoy trio I think. The script was weak but Shatner just had everything against him when making this movie too.
Star Trek 4 was a humorous and tongue in cheek. So they went a little too far in Star Trek 5 in that direction. Plus from what I understand it had budget and "production hell" issues that greatly affected the final product.

Some time after the release of this film, Walter Koenig was at a convention where an audience member made the statement "Shatner should never be allowed to direct again!", to which Walter replied "No...He was a good director...He should never be allowed to WRITE again!" much to the audience's delight...😄

I have always loved this one. It’s fun, it’s got pretty much everything we want from Trek and the TOS crew, plus horses. Everyone gets to have their moments and do things they probably enjoyed filming. The scenes with the Big Three are all deep, moving, fun and very memorable. Sybok’s character is complex and Lawrence Luckinbill is an excellent actor. The search for God stuff is almost unimportant in the face of everything else that is good about this film. The pacing, lighting, acting, the setups for many of the shots, it’s all great and Shatner did a good job directing despite huge budget cuts and writers’ strike. As I’ve said before, there is no bad Star Trek.

Yes I did. Now, have I watched it again since it came out? No. I consider it the weakest of TNG movies, but like all of them it has its moments.
Shatner wanted to do a story about televangelists, which makes it a fairly heavy theme. The studio was nervous and insisted humor be added (a la Voyage Home) which is why the film has a weird schizo nature.
Positives:
* Sybok was so charismatic and convincing, I started to believe him when Kirk did.
* Sybok is played very well
* I even bought Sybok being Spock's brother
* Bones' heart breaking memory
* A few other scenes and some gags worked. Kirk's "i need my pain" was good
* The reveal the Klingon ship was coming was played perfectly.
Negatives:
* Sybok, a very good character, promptly unalived
* The story set up stakes that couldn't be met
* Many gags were terrible. Scotty whacking his head wasn't funny because the actor is obviously getting older here
* Minor, but almost everybody misses the "marshmallow"/"marshmallow mellon" gag
* The Enterprise A being flakey. "Hahaha". That was done in TMP already and the "humor" here is lousy
* The three hostages had a lot of character development in the first act then were all but forgotten
There's a lot of cringe and disappointment here, but there's more good than bad. And in my head canon, Sybok somehow survived.
Of the five Trek movies at this point, I think it's certainly weakest. Of all Trek movies, this isn't even close to the worst.
I remember that comment about Scotty and the pipe-and literally laughed out loud-but it was killing me because I couldn’t say anything!
This movie is not as bad as people say! I'm probably in the minority but I enjoy all the Star Trek movies!

The only thing I ever remember from this movie is the marshmallow dispenser available from Kraft. It didn’t work that well, but it was exciting to get something like that in the mail at the time.
When other people watch through Trek, they usually see them all in a row, and ST5 suffers by comparison. I think they way you are doing it allows you to miss the characters a bit and then enjoy being reunited with them (which is closer to what we experienced, watching them as they came out) thereby appreciating the movie more.
'What does God need with a Starship?' is such a great line from Kirk. I love Star Trek V. For me it's up there with 2 and 3 if I'm going for a TOS movie rewatch.

This might not have been the Best Star Trek movie,in terms of production or story,but personally liked it cause i liked the characters and their interactions with all the original cast all the outdoors scenes and and it kinda felt like a Big Classic Episode in the atmosphere of the Originals.
If no one has already said it, there are 2 interesting cameos when Kirk, McCoy and Spock first go onto the bridge. First, the yeoman who meets Kirk is played by one of Shatner's daughters, Melanie. Also, the Admiral on the views screen is none other than producer Harve Bennett.

Spock: Captain Kirk speaks somewhat figuratively and with undue emotion. However, what he says is logical and I do, in fact, agree with it.
Special effects are not the same as the other films, since they couldn't get ILM like they had previously. So they do the best they can with reusing scenes and other tricks. The film overall isn't the best, but it does have some great scenes, that are some of the best of all the films. You can tell the film had many various issues pop up before and during production. Even with that though, I personally like the film.
I enjoyed it in the theaters but as a hardcore Trekker from the beginning all those decades ago, I also thought they were a bit too fast & loose with it.
Now, watching it with the fresh eyes of Alex & Josh, this movie moves up few notches in my appreciation.
It's funny watching in retrospect how much TNG bled over into this film. They reused a lot of the TNG sets as cost saving measures (they didn't even bother to redress the corridor scene, and in the sickbay scene you can see a TNG era LCARS computer display on the wall) and you can definitely see the change in style in the movie compared to ST4 and earlier.
In fairness, the TNG sets are primarily re-dresses of the TOS movie sets anyway.

I am waiting for the premiere to end so I can watch the reaction from the beginning, but I'm going to predict that you guys will... LIKE this movie. You won't think it's the best, but you won't think it's awful.

The campfire scene is one of the best scenes with the Big Three.
Rex Holman was the first guy that Sybok encountered in the beginning on Nimbus III he also played Morgan Earp in "Spectre of the Gun".
Wow, these videos are becoming increasingly amazing. You guys offer the unique perspective of promising to watch all of Star Trek completely fresh for the first time; you're the only people that make me see it with fresh eyes and capture the excitement I felt.
The fact that you're watching it all in production order is also unique. I can't wait for you to have to switch series for each video when the next Star Trek spin-off hits you. There's various changes in galactic politics that I never saw concurrently and which I look forward to you experiencing in order.
In the original script drafted by Shatner, the Enterprise was going to search for God in the center of the Galaxy and instead found the Devil, but Paramount panicked at the idea, and brought in Sybok and the Vulcan God of Shakiri, and so you have to wonder what the original script would have yielded. Sybok did end up being an irony, since Sarak was so grieved over Spock being so human at his birth, only to see his half-brother forsake Vulcan logic and fully embrace emotions, so that worked. Some did not like this show, especially in the critics circles, but for the fans, it did well at the box office. This is when Wierd Al tried to launch UHF in theaters and it got crushed because you had to compete with Ghost Busters 2,, Tim Burton's Batman, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, preceded by Kevin Costner's Field of Dreams at the start in May and The Dream Team also with Michael Keaton in it, so for me it was weekend after weekend of Block Busters to sit and watch! The Movie Theaters made a KILLING in ticket sales this summer of 1989 and I'll never forget going to the theater to see all of these with my friends and alumni at College at the time!

No matter what you think of this movie, you gotta admit the Bones and Spock visions when Sybok tries to turn them is a GREAT scene.
