No Spring Day wasn't written before the sewol ferry tragedy, because the tragedy happened year 2014, and the song was released year 2017. The lyrics was written with the concept of missing someone, and the music video was a tribute to all the victims of the tragedy..

i haven’t finished watching but just want to reiterate that the MV and the song are separate. The MV is the one that honors the sewol ferry disaster but the song is a song namjoon and suga wrote about their old friend. You should watch the explanation by an italian army about the MV, it really opens your eyes about many things about the disaster. At first, this was a fan theory, but last year Jin confirmed it was about the disaster

Spring Day is our queen, not just because she is still(!) on the charts, but she evokes emotions in us all. She is hauntingly beautiful and if you have any sorrow within you, your reaction is exactly what happens. We've all been there - I still play her when I need a good cry because, as you said, there is hope there as well. I feel purified every time and ready to move on from whatever bothers me. 💜 Thank you for sharing that moment with us and please take care when watching Italian ARMY's explanation. You need to be in a good headspace for that.
P.S. She speaks really fast in that video, so feel free to pause anytime to read the subtitles - there's a LOT to take in.

7:18 you're describing the Korean concept of "Han" which is like sadness and hope together.
The Italian Army explanation is devastating. Be prepared. I cry every time I see someone react to it even though I've seen it a few times now. Some of the scenes are harrowing. Have Tissues and water. 💜
If you ever wanted to react to British artists I recommend Dave, the song Psycho is a good one.

Yes, Rm and Suga wrote the song about longing. Sugas parts reminds me of his D2 mix tape song, Dear my friend. I get a feeling that he is talking about the same friend, just going little more into what happened in that D2 song.

  • @oliviagil799
    @oliviagil799 Před 2 lety +23

The song itself simply talks about missing someone, a friend, so it can be interpreted as many things and everyone can interpret the lyrics as they want.
The MV on the other hand, is full of different imagery and symbolism. It references 3 things specifically:
    1. The Sewol ferry disaster that happened in Korea (2014)
    2. A korean movie called "Snowpiercer" (2013)
    3. A book called "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" (1973)
Both the movie and the book have themes connected to the ferry disaster and are used as a way to criticise not only society but the people involved in the ferry disaster as well
Edit: Welp, you figured that the song and MV have different meanings, but I'll still leave this comment here for others

  • @czak598
    @czak598 Před 2 lety +11

I always call Spring Day an ARMY rite of passage. When Tina told me you were reacting to it next, I made sure she had prepped you. 😂
This was the point in my baby ARMYhood that I realized just how subversively sociopolitical they could be. They've brought the tragedy to the attention of millions of people around the world in a lasting fashion, unlike global mainstream media that covered the event with one small story and no follow-ups.
Their MV director, Choi Yong Seok of Lumpens, is, of course, a genius, too. His videos are some of their best. Watch out for him in the credits.
I totally agree about the feelings of grief and anger progressing to hope. When the pandemic hit, they performed this at both the Class of 2020 Graduation CZcams special (their speeches from that are highly recommended) and the Tiny Desk Concert. The mood of hope was strong as we are all waiting for a Spring to bring us out of this era.

This video is a memorial to the lives lost in the Sewol ferry disaster.
The sinking of MV Sewol, also called the Sewol ferry disaster, occurred on the morning of 16 April 2014, when the ferry MV Sewol was en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 1.7 mi; 1.5 nmi north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (15 April 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 304 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School (Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately forty minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG)
    Cause
Capsized due to multiple right turns, exacerbated by center-of-gravity instability due to illegal ship modifications and overloading of cargo
The sinking of Sewol resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many criticized the actions of the ferry's captain and most of the crew. Also criticized were the ferry's operator, Chonghaejin Marine, and the regulators who oversaw its operations, along with the administration of President Park Geun-hye for her response to the disaster and attempts to downplay government culpability, and the KCG for its poor handling of the disaster, and the perceived passivity of the rescue-boat crew on scene.
Outrage has also been expressed against the initial false reporting of the disaster by the government and South Korean media, who claimed everyone aboard had been rescued and against the government for prioritizing public image over the lives of its citizens in refusing help from other countries and publicly downplaying the severity of the disaster.
The students were ordered to remain in their seats at the same time the captain and crew were abandoning ship.
On 15 May 2014, the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, while the other eleven members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship. An arrest warrant was also issued for Yoo Byung-eun, the owner of Chonghaejin Marine, but he could not be found despite a nationwide manhunt. On 22 July 2014, police revealed that they had established that a dead man found in a field 415 kilometres (258 mi) south of Seoul was Yoo.
    Deaths: 299 on-board, 2 rescue divers, 5 emergency workers
    Missing: 5
Suspects: Captain and 14 crew members
    Charges:
    Homicide (4 including the captain)
    Fleeing and abandoning ship (2)
    Negligence (9)[9]
    Verdict: Guilty
Convictions: Life sentence (captain), 10 years (chief engineer), 18 months−12 years (13 other crew members)[10]
    On board
476 (325 Danwon High School students)
    Survivors
172 (171 after the subsequent suicide of the vice principal of Danwon High School)

Not sure if you realised Jhope didn't have a rap verse in the song. He actually does background vocals in the chorus. When they perform the song live he usually does RM's beggining verse with beautiful vocals, he suits it really well and I wish he was on the studio recording for that part.💜

On an unrelated matter I wonder if you noticed your favourite reaction channel or channel you often mention - Key of Geebz, just reacted to Silverchair's song Tuna In The Brine the other day? It popped up and I gave it a watch. Spoiler, he really liked it. He's an interesting reactor, I like how he explains the music and watching his expressions. I also saw he reacted to their song Emotion Sickness late last year (gave that a watch also). Anyway in case you get to doing reactions to Silverchair yourself, I hope you'll leave those videos to watch later so you don't spoil anything.
I noticed Key of Geebz listened to the studio version of the songs but I know you enjoy live performances, which is why I gave you links to lives and their lives are definetly worth watching. If you enjoy any of their songs enough, I want to suggest you consider reacting to both the live and the studio recording. Live sounds amazing with vocals and instruments, but the production on their studio recordings is also so good. It's a really good experience hearing all the tiny detail in the studio recording that you can't necessarily get from the live.
Also I learnt from a comment on Key of Geebz's video that David Bottrill who produced on 3 of Tool's albums co-produced their album Diorama. The other producer was their singer Daniel Johns which was the first time he had production credits. Thought that might be of some interest to you since you enjoy Tool. 😎

But you'll surely get the names in comments.
    Again thankyou so much.

    Great video!
I'm glad that you're also planning to react to the explanation by Italian Army, even if it's a very difficult watch I feel like it's a necessary one.
I'd also like to add something...
A lot of people are really adamant that you completely separate the song from the MV and the tragedy, and I don't think that is quite right.
I totally believe that the initial inspiration behind the song is missing old friends as RM and the others have said, but I also think more came
into play further down the creative process given not only some of the songs lyrics but also the context of it's release(being the title track
of "You Never Walk Alone", and based on what people like Pdogg and Jin have said it's pretty much confirmed to be about both).
It's not JUST about the tragedy, a lot of it is about longing and loss in a more general sense, but it's also not completely unrelated to it.

It’s not rly accurate to say it was adopted for the Sewol Ferry Disaster. This song came after the incident and, frankly, the symbolism in the mv (but also just the lyrics themselves) is unmistakeable. I *strongly* recommend doing 1-2 analysis vids even just on your own bc honestly you’ll never look at BTS or this song the same way again. This one is good for symbolism in the mv: czcams.com/video/Tye1ONFeKis/video.html This one is a must to understand the disaster, the politics around it and how BTS was risky their career, arguably their lives with this song. czcams.com/video/FrT4a_Fw6pE/video.html It’s a pauser as there are a lot of subtitles but we’ll stick with you! Spring Day is The Queen! Still on Korean charts to this day!

You probably didn't watch the news at that time, but it was huge. Ferry stuff told kids to stay in their cabins and then later they first escaped and all kids died. I'm into Korean for 13+ years so I watched live coverage of that incident. It "lasted"forever while everybody was hopping but president didn't even get out of her room at that time!!! To be there, to watch the ferry sinking slowly and knew that your kids will die!!!!!!!!!!!! Later they discovered that hoses which were supposed to pump oxygen and help kids survive were not even connected and it was all done to just pretend helping for news. Life guard's boat (only one) stayed away and only fishermen boats helped some to escape. As I said, it lasted forever and they could do so many things but they didn't. And after that they didn't allow anyone to say anything about that!!! It was forbiden until president Park was kicked out. And now they forgave her and she is out of jail (for other things).
If you have time, read about it, it will take 5 min to see that injustice.
Btw Spring Day is the longest lasting song on Korean Melon chart, over 5 years, never left chart! Now 267 weeks, 60th place.

Are you also making your way through the D-2 mixtape (Agust D's)? I think you have done maybe half the tracks? The reason I bring this up is because there is a theory that SUGA wrote his verse in Spring Day about the person he addresses in 'Dear My Friend'. Some of the lyrics from Spring Day appear in this track, I suppose he could also be mourning his life and friendships before fame

Would like to recommend (to watch, not necessarily a reaction), Yi Seung-jun's academy award nominated film 'In the Absence.' It's a shot film that details the tragedy and aftermath. Can be found on CZcams as 'What Went Wrong in the South Korean Ferry Disaster?'/ The New Yorker
I believe BTS have said recently that the song and MV are about the disaster. Back in 2017 it was too politically sensitive to say so

The shoes at the tree in the last scene represents death and it is a symbol for who passed away in Sewol ferry incident. Omelas part in Mv is sth you would like to search actually. It is a story named as "The ones who walk away from Omelas" by Ursula Le Guin. The story is simply about there is this one boy who is trapped in a house and he has to live alone forever in order to citizens of Omelas live peaceful. The people who know about this takes 2 paths. First way is stay in Omelas and live their happiest life but knowing that the kid is miserable just to make them live better. Second way is leave the Omelas and not to be part of this terrible situation while not helping him either by leaving him alone. The story asks what would you do if you know that your life is depended to someones unhappiness? One person's happiness or majority's happiness is morally right is questioned. You should read the story tho, it is really short and beatiful. Liked the reaction btw ❤❤❤

I may look at MV more one day, it's just I'm trying to focus on the lyrics more than the imagery. That being said I know how BTS ties in everything, visual, music, dance to get their message across.

I guess at the end you didn't watch the Italian girl video or at least you decided not to react to it. Understandable it is really hard. However I still recommend it to you even in your alone time, as well as a Oscar nominated short documentary film(28 minutes) called " In the absence" it records minute by minute what was happening and all the illegalities, rules broken and inaction. I warn you it is hard to see, although you don't see faces, you see the kids trying to break the windows from the inside when they were already trapped inside. Very infuriating things the only comfort is to know that at least after 2 years they impeached the president. It certainly didn't revert things but it is the minimum to ask for.
