How FAST Is The Supercharged Jaguar S-Type R? 0-60 MPH, 1/4 Mile, Donuts, Burnouts

  • The new transmission is in my Jaguar S-Type R and it's a blast to drive! Now that it's on the road it's time to see what kind of numbers it puts down. We take it out with the Dragy to get some 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, then destroy whats left of the old Raptor tires on the car. The new tires go on this weekend so we better not leave any tread on the old ones. Time for some donuts and attempts at doing a burnout, or maybe a good launch. If you want to know how glorious it sounds with gutted cats and cherry bombs, this is your video.

As an owner of an original 4.0 supercharged AJ-V8 I can understand why Jaguar underbuilt this engine. Their customer base contains nearly zero drag racers, and a hell of a lot of middle-aged professional men and women who appreciated the smooth and effortless acceleration made possible by gentle supercharging of a V8 engine. It’s the next-best thing to a normally aspirated V12..
Along with the torque benefit, second owners of this car like me have discovered that, as with my ‘01 XJR, this engine is pretty much bulletproof. Provided you swap out the original plastic cam chain tensioners and water pump with factory metal replacements, you’ll find yourself in my fortunate situation. At 156,000 miles my 2001 XJR with supercharged 4.0 AJ-V8 (which I do not drag race or use for burnouts) is as fast as new - or faster! It doesn’t burn oil and continues to deliver 21 mpg at highway speeds.
This steel-bodied X-308, which cost then-owner Ford hundreds of millions to develop, was in its day the world's finest production sport sedan. It was faster then AMG's legendary Hammer, and yet was opulently luxurious, its interior a combination of hardwood and leather like only the British can do, and its exterior noted by many as the most beautiful post-WWII sedan.
My wrench knows several XJR and S-Type owners with 250,000 miles plus on the clock and still running smoothly, with no major component failures. (Except for the German ZF transmission, which is another story.) Mind you, I live in California, where any well-built and maintained car will run forever. Except, as we see here, when abused by adolescents like this guy who pick them off Craig's List for a few thousand and drive them into the ground.
My advice to potential Jag owners is to purchase a 1998-2003 X-308 series XJR sedan (not the S-Type shown here, which is cheesy by comparison) and find a private, non-dealer Jag specialty shop to keep it running smoothly and affordably. If there’s no such shop near you, do not buy a Jaguar. It is a highly complex Euro-Luxury sedan and will be destroyed by your local tube-up shop. Check around to see if there’s a local Jaguar club. They will set you straight and help you prevent making a fool of yourself like this guy.

I used to commute an hour each way so I bought this as a comfortable daily. It was great, even in snow, with very few problems. If you follow the service intervals or get them done at Jag/Land Rover, the car would likely clock 300K miles, easily. You have to use the OG J-shift automanual feature to get it in true sport mode for high revs, though.

I watched this a year ago when I had my V6 SE. And I was like “man I so want an R” i now have an R and I just wanted to let you know. I to had an absolute nightmare with lug nuts AND....lug studs. I only wanted to paint my brake callipers. And had nothing but trouble with rounded lugs and bad threads on studs. I got everything all fixed after a nightmare of chiselling to then find a lock nut rounded. I then had to get the chisel back out. 5 hours late. I was back in business. No more security lock nuts for me. I finally got to the tyre place feeling confident with my new nuts and studs. For them to find a crack in my rear alloy wheel :( I nearly collapsed with the stress. Luckily a place down the road were able to weld the wheel. So after 3 weeks of hell im back driving her. Awesome machine. And the brake callipers look awesome. In red with R stickers on also. 🙌

Fellow STR owner/driver.....sport mode, gear change manually, and throw in a Cold Air Ram system......things change. This car is 'governed' at 155 mph but by manually shifting in/through sport mode 167-178 mph is a possibility. Why 178? because that's the top speed rated for most z rated tires. After 178 mph things can go BOOM.

heres my 2 cents for anyone thinking of buying any of the jag r models with the 4.2 supercharged.i have a 04 xjr thats basicly the same drivetrain but a bit lighter because mine has the aluminum body.great engine and trans,I think there easy to work on,most reliable of the jags, parts are available and pretty inexpensive from ebay.alot of the suspension parts are the same as the Lincoln ls,mercron sp fluid works in the trans and is half the price as the more exspensive stuff out there, yes def change the trans fluid and filter(built into pan) its very easy to do.with proper maintenance they will run a very long time.as for performance there fast for what they are and will surprise alot of cars, stock my car ran 13.2 at 108 0-60 in 4.8 sec my guess this str maybe the intercooler pump was not working and it pulled timing or not good 93 oct fuel and pulled timing or it was hot, super charger was hot, weather was humid, etc they all factor in.they call the supercharger heaton for a reason.lol .for mods 12% pulley, intake tube, filter, exhaust work and should run mid to low 12s but thats about the best its going to get for a few reasons, not much more in the way of performance parts out there, limited by stock m112 supercharger(porting doesnt do much)open dif, crappy rear end gear(2.81) etc but they can be had cheap, low 12s is pertty fast, drives like a dream, and it can be deadly from a roll and will do a legit 170mph.make sure trac control is off, sport mode is on and it will spin the tire as long as you want.cool little trick too if your racing from a dig leave trac control on off the line to control wheel spin, once you get out of the hole turn it off.

The cars are fun and pretty luxurious for their time and price. Only problem is they are not very modifiable with few brands making any parts to increase power. Also the engine is the basically the same one found in the Lincoln town car, with an increase from 4.0 to 4.2 liters and a super charger slapped on it. I owned an STR as well, if you want an amazing burnout, slick the tires with oil, I did a 200-500 ft rolling burnout by doing that. The reason it won’t do a burnout is cause the rear brakes are too huge, a lot of weight on the rear, and very wide tires providing too much grip. Oil those tires up and you’ll be good to go, if you keep doing it in the drive you’ll destroy the transmission, take it from me :)

I think the reason why the car in the video is slower is that it has a motor demage. You can hear the rattle from the motor when the Jaguar is driven faster. So the test is not representative.
