This is one of the cheapest Pedersoli guns in the productline. I find it a good solution for hunters, fun shooters, primitive shooters and beginners as well. Here is my accuracy test with target and hunting load as well.

I have a lot of respect for Pedersoli and other Italian retro gun makers. I applaud their interest in American Firearm history. Looking at some of the comments below concerning problems, keep in mind ANYTHING mass produced as these are, you can get a POS from time to time. All manufacturers can have issues. IMHO

@@jordannewsom4578 well at first it was feeding it. BP and substitutes are pretty hard to get ahold of here. Got the rifle in the early spring and none showed up on the shelves till deer season. The big reason is I've been rather preoccupied and getting out to shoot has been difficult. One day i'll be able to use my yard as a rifle range, but not while it's a 1/4th acre in the burbs.

I have a TC HAWKEN flint lock rifle in.50. I bought it about 35 years ago and it is everything I hoped for. At 50 meters it will shoot hole in hole groups. I use 110 grains of 2F black powder. I know that this is a very strong load, but when hunting I want a load that has the maximum amount of penetration. I use TC MINI BALLS of 350 grains.

I have a cheap Hawken replica. Twist is 1 in 48 inches. For deer, I use a Thompson Center maxi ball (semi conical, 370 grain) 93 grains of ff goex gives me 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. For small game, I use a patched ball of. 490 inches with 55 grains of ff goex. This produces one ragged hole at 50 yards to the same point of impact. I had to experiment for several dozen range sessions to develop these loads, but they have served me well for about 25 years in the field. Longest kill was at 140 yards on a deer. There was a complete pass through in the vital area, and it only moved 20 yards from where it was hit.

Very nice, thankyou again capandball! I have used my 50cal Hawken with 2 different ball sizes and 2 different pre-lubed parches, and a load above 80 grains, over a number of years for hunting on a farm in NSW in Australia. Hawkens are worthwhile!
Addit; i am attaching here a reply I made to a BP question earlier in these comments. It asked for a "first BP caliber reccomendation?" A: I hope you do not mind my providing my opinion from Australia. I would suggest you might look at the calibers of historic rifles you like and choose your first BP in one of those calibers. This is because you can use the balls, bullets, patches, ramrods, starters, brushes, etc, etc that you bought for it, potentially in the future if you eventually go for something that you already admire and aspire to. I say this from experience, I bought a second hand Hawken in 50cal from limited options on a gunshop rack, I really love it and spent time, treasure, and storage space on these accessories. One historic rifle I would like to own is in either .54 or .58 cal. If I got one, I would need to obtain all that stuff in the new calibre, again over time as available, and provide storage space for it.

I shoot a Lyman Great Plains flintlock .50 and I've had fantastic results, especially with my heavier hunting load since it has a 1:32 twist. They cost around $550 so they're not extremely expensive but not low-end either. My hunting load is 95 grs. Goex FFG and a Hornady 385 gr bullet. It's a great elk load but since it shoots great, I use it for everything including pronghorn and deer. It shoots 1-1.25" groups @ 50 yds constantly swabbing the bore between shots. One bad thing, watch out for the recoil. My plinking load is 65 grs Goex FFG, a .495" ball with a .015" patch. This shoots 1.5" @ 50 yds consistently. Good since its a 1:32 twist and the recoil is very minimal.

Very nice and well done video. I have a vintage Thompson .50 cal and I love to shoot it in the desert of New Mexico. I have recently begun to make my own black powder and have exceptional results with balsa charcoal. With all respect, the use of the term precision, means the instrument does the same thing each time. Your gun is precision as is well documented in your video by your grouping. Accuracy means it is calibrated against a standard (i.e. hits the bulls-eye) A small nuance but nevertheless a detail to be aware of. Thank you for your posting.

Blackpowder is a quite safe propellant with moderate gas pressures. The only occassion when it can generate much higher pressures is when you leave airspace between ball and bullet. If you are lucky, your bore will only have a bubble, if you are unlucky it can explode as well.

Not unless you want it to possibly blow back in your face. Years ago, Thompson Center arms stopped making the Hawken rifle. I found one at the gun show at the Lorain County fair grounds in Ohio. It also has the optional cherrywood stock. No brass, all blued or black. Better rear sight too. Very well balanced & accurate gun. But I like watching the videos anyway.

I purchased my Pedersoli Hawken from Cabelas. It is a beautiful rifle to look at. If you purchase this rifle you will enjoy the look and feel. But, be ready to spend some very dedicated shooting time with it in order to shoot with any real accuracy. Do not use 2fg powder. Do use 3fg size powder. A tight fitting patch and ball will help.

    • @grenmoyo3968

    • @rayjohn3946
      @rayjohn3946 Před 6 lety

For this Pedersoli Hawken rifle use 3f because the inside of the nipple drum is to small for the standard pyrodex rs powder. 2f jams up in the tiny hole of this rifles drum and won't get in under the percussion cap nipple to fire. 3f goes down in there perfect. Now I'll say this since I'm at it. I had to take my Cabelas purchased pedersoli hawken to my gun smith and have it recrowned because whom ever did the original factory crown did a terrible job and so all the shots I've fired through this rifle up until last week where a complete waste of ammunition. If you are thinking of buying a Pedersoli muzzleloader then do not buy from Cabelas. Go to Cherry's or Taylor & Company to purchase your Pedersoli.

FYI: 40 years ago Alabama like many other states opened an early black powder only season similar to the archery season but not as liberal. Many many shots with my hawken 50 cal later, I was disappointed with its accuracy with the round ball. I remember it weighing around 150 gn plus or minus. I used FFF (80 gn) and a 0.018 patch with a 0.490 round ball, Poor as you have shown here. The rifle was manufactured by Thompson Center. However, I was able to kill the small Alabama deer and won several matches. The set trigger was very good. The soft lead ball at times would not exit and fully expanded was the size of a quarter. Very devastating. The twist was 1 turn in 24". Too slow for one, too fast for the other. 10 yrs later, Browning produced a replica of the John Browning rifle that started his career. The rifle would group (still have it) 6" at 100 yds with a 490 RB. So now you know why. Thanks for your work from an old shooter.

what would be better choice Hawken Mountain or Kentucky? Both in .45 caliber... I'm thinking about recreational shooting on range (distance max 100m).
What would you recommend and why?

" The patched round ball is excellent for target shooting, but for hunting you need something that can keep the energy better" Stated like a PRB is inadequate for hunting ------ For the entire history of the muzzle loading gun, the round ball was it- it was only for a few decades in the 19th century before metallic cartridges came about that conical bullets were used. Before that, and since then, patched round balls have and continue to kill all kinds of game very, very dead. The buck I hit with a .54 ball didn't laugh at me, he ran 20 yards and folded up gushing blood from both sides. Guess he thought it was adequate. Just in North America., from Plymouth rock to the end of the mountain man era- you had one projectile- a round ball the proper diameter for your weapon, and people hunted to live. Seems like it worked/works.

Hi, thanks! Yes, they are made and sold by Pedersoli. I use them both in 54 and 58 caliber. Love it for soft lubes.

What kind and what size of flint should be used for the Pedersoli Hawken flintlock? I often see that there are certain brands of pan and frizzle and some urge the use of certain flint. Great video by the way.

Orlando, for this lock size you need a 5/8" flint.

Try starting on the low end of powder charge and work up. .50cal starting load is 50gr using patched round ball. Also try a tighter fitting patch, pillow ticking material from Wal Mart makes perfect patches. The pre made lubed patches never did work well for any of my calibers.
My .50cal's shoot really good with Pyrodex RS but not good with real BP or Triple7. My .45 does best with Goex and the .32 does best with Pyrodex P.

    • @AussieMaleTuber

I hope you do not mind my providing my opinion from Australia. If I got one, I would need to obtain all that stuff in the new caliber, again over time as available, and provide storage space for it.

Hawkin or Kentucky/Pennsylvania rifles are the best to get started with you can buy them pretty cheap compared to others and they’re good fun

The barrel is the same as on their higher priced Sharps rifles. I tried both Modern and Original bullets in .54 cal, but the Original worked better for me.
