In this tutorial, I show you how to make realistic miniature magazines and newspapers for dioramas and dollhouses. The process is super simple, just scale down some pictures you find online, print them off, fold them in half, glue them together with mod podge, and repeat!
In addition, I also show you how to make a resin 3D printed magazine rack and newspaper shelf. I show you how to remove supports from resin 3D prints using and X-Acto Knife, I show you how to sand and prep 3D prints for painting, and I also show you how to make clear shelves from packaging plastic.
With all the parts prepped, I show you how I airbrush the shelves in my paint booth. The airbrush shown in this video is a GSI Creos PS771. I really like this airbrush and it's super easy to use. I can easily paint the parts without flooding the surface with too much paint.
Once all the parts are painted, I assemble the Magazine Rack and Newspaper Shelf. Then, I glue the individual mini magazines to the rack one at a time. This takes a while to do, but I think the result looks amazing.

Id like to see more on how you download/copy paste them and especially how you scale them please. Great tutorial - Thank You
I may be able to incorporate some of that process in some future videos!
But for now I’ll say that I just look up whatever magazine I’m looking for on google, save the image to my computer, size it roughly to scale in adobe illustrator (in this case .5” tall), duplicate it for the back side, and print!
Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
3d printing has been such an amazing advancement for model and diorama building. Great video!
I completely agree, I absolutely love 3D printing! Thank you for the support!
I ❤ your work
Thank you, I’m so happy you like it! Thanks again for watching :)
Super good video and you made it look easy enough that even all thumb's me could pull it off.
Thank you!! I’m so happy you like the video! And yes you definitely can do this :) thanks for watching!
This is beautiful.
Thank you!
Really cool! Love how you made the magazines - very realistic!
Thank you I’m glad you like them!
These look fantastic! Even the old one! ❤
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you like them!
Just go ahead and make the whole 7/11. I can’t wait to see the shelf of miniature Twinkie’s and beef jerky. LOL 😂
The Magazine rack cut-aways was the most interesting part‼️ ,) 👍
Thank you!!
What a great project... LUV IT!!!😮😮😮
Thank you!! I’m so glad you like it :)
Awesome 👏🏻
Thank you!!
Thanks mate! I love everything miniature! Great work! Subscribed 👍🏻
@@craiglister7110 that’s awesome! Thanks for subscribing and supporting the channel :)
These are some of the best diorama details I've ever seen! Love it!
If it sounds fun to you, I think a record shop (or a record shop shelf?) in a similar style made by you, would look amazing!
Thank you!!! A record shot would be so cool, lots of opportunities for fine detail! I have a few projects lined up in the queue, so I’m not exactly sure when I’d get to that. But maybe one day! Thanks again for watching :)
I love your videos! You make everything feel so magical 😊
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you like the miniatures :)
Super, super.
Thank you!
Absolutely fantastic work. Wonderful.
Thank you! I’m glad you like it!
looks good
Thank you!
I’d love to see you make some Japanese vending machines
That would be coool!! Thanks for watching :)
The realism is amazing!!!!! ❤😊❤
Thank you!!! Glad you like the video!
@@smolworldworkshop you are welcome 🤗
Awesome video 😊😊😊
Fabulous work!
Thank you!!!
It's professional.
Thank you!!
This is amazing! New to your channel but love the detail and realism. Looking forward to seeing your new projects….. ever considered making an wall mounted ATM? Would love to see how you’d go about it since I’ve not found any other channels make one.
Thank you so much!!! I’ll potentially make an atm machine in the future - these shelves are part of a convenience store model I’m working on, and I know some of the stores have an atm. Not exactly sure when I’ll get to it though
I would imagine it would mainly be a painting tutorial considering I would most likely 3D print the body of the machine!
@@smolworldworkshop yeah that sounds great, probably similar to the production of the air conditioners czcams.com/video/Q-9TX6fQiE4/video.html in video? Obviously minus all the heavy weathering, but you could do loads of cool stuff like adding in LEDs etc. anyways…. Loving your content and looking forward to seeing more!!
@@johnboulton1109 led lights would be really cool!!! And thank you again for watching and supporting the channel!
These are amazing and beautiful models! What scale are they in?
I have worked in the book and magazine distribution business for many years, and these racks look like several I've serviced. Many American drugstores use a very similar rack, with the top shelf holding paperback books.
Most American newsstands would not have multiple issues of the same magazine title on display, but most people would never notice this! I only did because of my job experience.
Dude nice dude
Dood thanks dood, do you like pineapple on pizza bro?
Supercute
Thank you!
This is amazing work 🙏 only just discovered and subbed to your channel last night 😎👍
Thank you!! I’m glad you’re enjoying my content, thanks for subscribing and for your support!!!
I found it last night as well. Thank you, CZcams algorithm.
@@Lisargarza I’m so glad you found my channel!
I'm so fuckin glad I found your channel haha you do some absolutely awesome stuff.
Haha thank you so much, I’m so happy you found my channel too! And thanks for the support!
@@smolworldworkshop Oh absolutely! I love seeing the creations of other people and their ideas. It's great inspiration for my own work. I'm curious though, do you ever use ideas that were suggested to you from your viewers? I know this space is typically crowded with people spouting their opinions on what kind of crenellations your castle should have or why you shouldn't buy "A" companies products because "B" companies' are better lol but just curious on whether or not the type of work/hobby you do allows for idea sharing in regards to your projects because I'd love to see your take on certain subjects and the methodology you employ to receive a particular result. Cheers!
@@LauraDelvecchio thank you! I’m glad to hear these videos are inspiring for you!
I’d say for the shorter videos, I make miniatures or show techniques that I know I’ll use for an upcoming project. But, also I have to be mindful about how much time it takes to make, since I need to keep posting videos. I’d be open to suggestions from my viewers, but it would have to be something that I would like to make too!
Beautiful! What scale is that?
Thank you! This is 1/24 scale
You're welcome. Can this be done in HO?
Cosmopolitan monthly magazines don't sell too well. Five numbers side by side still available there!
Hahaha yep! Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I was going to bring that up. "This ain't a library." A news stand wouldn't have old issues. So cool looking, though.
They need the decency covers (?) I've seen in supermarkets.
Did those back panels really need supports? Is the printer you use incapable of printing flat pieces?
Technically speaking you don’t need supports to print them. I do for the sake of protecting the print itself, and for print quality. If you print this flat on the build plate, you’ll likely ruin the print trying to scrape it off, unless you have a flex plate. In regards to print quality, again, printing it flat will likely fill in the .025” perforated holes in the panel, especially with the over exposure of burn in layers. It’s more work, but I always raise my prints because I personally find I have the most control over the final outcome!
What scale were you working to.
Hi there! This is 1/24 scale!
@smolworldworkshop i love that you do so much half scale stuff, its weirdly hard to find videos of. Would you do a full 1/24 dollhouse build series in the future?
@@mobius273 thank you!!! I know it’s really difficult to find 1/24 scale videos unless it’s something like model cars. I’m not sure if I’ll make a dollhouse specifically, but I have considered making residential dioramas in this scale!
@@smolworldworkshop anything that involves interiors :)
are you from hong kong?😂 nice miniature
Thank you!! I’m from the US but I visited Hong Kong back in 2018! I’ve been wanting to build a large diorama of HK for a while now (I have drawn CAD files of buildings I want to make) but I don’t have access to a laser cutter anymore. One day I’ll build it though so for now I’m just making small details like these! Thanks for watching!
@@smolworldworkshop oh wow 2018....Hong Kong wasn't the Hong Kong you visit anymore😅, but forgot about it, haha... I admire you miniature building work!!! They are highly details!!! I also collect lots of miniature and do some print job when I am free, looking forward to see your future work!!! And sorry my english is bad😅
@@alvinbetic thank you so much I’m glad to hear you like printing and collecting miniatures too! And yeah I’ve heard Hong Kong has changed very quickly in the past few years. Thanks again for watching!!
I did a similar technique to make some empty (squished) and "full" soda (Mountain Dew) cases/boxes for some "trash" in the back of a 1/25 scale pickup model in a diorama. Here is the finished product. czcams.com/video/BxIsP1pmwHE/video.html
Wow that looks fantastic, thanks for sharing that!
why are you using Chinese mags ans papers
Part of larger project that I’ve been working on for years, I’m going to make a miniature 711 in Hong Kong!
@@smolworldworkshop omg that's gonna be awesome! Cannot wait to see this! Do you ever incorporate lighting into your builds?
@@n9ne2006 thank you!! For Hong Kong i definitely will! Just a disclaimer, I have no idea when I’ll finish Hong Kong. I have laser cut files of the buildings ready for years now, but I don’t have access to a laser cutter anymore. But in the meantime, I’ve been making all the small accessories and details!
I’m not sure there’s much “how to” here…lol.
“Here’s how to make a scale model bar stool….. 3d print it, slap some paint on it, done.” 😂
10:27 home depot sells perforated metal sheets like that. The holes might be a tiny bit bigger, but definitely good for the model world... and actual metal.
Good to know thanks for sharing
Fantastic work. Very inspiring ideas for modelling. Thanks for sharing your skills and enthusiasm. See you soon. Mikey V.
Thank you for all the support, I really appreciate it!
Great - but I think you're crazy.
Haha thank you!!!
