    Every time I watch this build, I am in AWE at ALL of the phenomenal work done at every stage of the build. The whole complex or building is a work of art, and then the items that would typically be considered art is just off the charts great!!!
    Magnificent!!! Bravo, everyone, BRAVO!!!

    I have researched this for many years. I am almost finished with mine. It recently withstood 7.1 wnd 6.4 earthquakes eith ZERO damage. 3 years ago over 250 structures on the other side of the kake from me were lost to wild fire. I am hoping more will open theur minds and sed the strength as well as the beauty of this type of build.
    The one one in this video is by far the most beautiful I have seen!
    Awesome work !

In fact, back in 2013, our construction foreman, Romeo, became the first person in the LWH team to do so, followed by our Construction Manager, Roberto, in 2018. Hugo, green-building foreman has also implemented some of these techniques in his own house. We hope it soon becomes a trend in Comalapa 😊. Thank you for watching our videos! Dear commenters, Thank you for the feedback. Prior to building this structure we built with tires and bamboo. We also built this structure. czcams.com/video/EtK2V3lMiu0/video.html as a trial run. What we discovered during the construction of this building was that earthbag buildings such as this, although strong, are not as easily replicable as tire buildings, in earthquake and hurricane prone Guatemala. I agree with one of the comments about not receiving enough square footage for all of the work necessary which is one of the reasons we dont do this more often. However, because we are building a school, what we lost in sq feet we gained in the structural integrity of a round (is sound) building. The reason we have added so much art, is b/c the rooms are filled with students and teachers, the campus with families, community members, and visitors.

    Amazing! Those are some big earthbag domes! Love the idea of tin can rooftiles. Very inventive! Not sure about the plastic bottle ones though, i imagine them degrading and eventually falling apart relatively quickly. But enough of that, i wonder who are living there now?

    • @LongWayHomeOrg
      @LongWayHomeOrg  Před 4 lety +5

      Hi there, Merlin! The answer is yes, eventually they will break down. However, our research shows that in the 5 years we have had shingles up in that building, none have broken down yet. If anything, once they start deteriorating, the idea is to replace them with new ones and stuff the old ones in tires. For your second question: the first floor of that building is actually comprised of 3 classroom and 1 bathroom, and on the second floor there is an office and two guest rooms that are currently being used by our Executive Director and our Green Building Academy instructor.

      Hey Audrey! You are absolutely right in that it is easier to use adobe blocks, which is what we've used in pretty much all of our buildings. With this building in particular though, we wanted to try something different (that's part of the beauty of green building, you can have a lot of fun in trying out various construction methods, materials and techniques!) It was indeed a lot of work but the result is magnificent, at least in our eyes, and this building ended up becoming the focal point of our campus -it's the first thing everyone wants to see when they come to visit us in Comalapa. @@Null-Red-Blue on buildings the most efficient placement for insulation is on the outside. So, you want shotcrete with embedded rebar inside then aircrete on the outside. That way the inner concrete can act as a heat sink. This plus the outer insulation flattens the temp swings inside in the day/night cycle.
