Stricken, smitten, and afflicted,
See Him dying on the tree!
'Tis the Christ by man rejected;
Yes, my soul, 'tis He! 'tis He!
'Tis the long-expected Prophet,
David's Son, yet David's Lord;
Proofs I see sufficient of it:
'Tis the true and faithful Word.
Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning,
Was there ever grief like His?
Friends through fear His cause disowning,
Foes insulting His distress;
Many hands were raised to wound Him,
None would intervene to save;
But the deepest stroke that pierced Him
Was the stroke that justice gave.

My favorite part is the last two lines: "None shall ever be confounded
Who on Him their hope have built." Through His sacrifice, we have eternal hope and confidence, and no one can take that from us.

I sang this hymn in a octet at my church on Maundy Thursday. This is definately one of my favorate lenten texts. Good video.
He took it all upon himself for us....no greater love has he than this, that he lay down his life his friends.
My favorite line is the this..'but the deepest stroke that pieced him was the stroke that justice gave.' He took it all so we would not have to. He paid the price, and we are redeemed. The debt has been paid.

Thanks! We have always used this hymn on Good Friday, and it still brings me to tears. In fact, I had to stop several times while I was recording because I was so moved by the convicting truth of the lyrics.

@LutheranWarbler Yet at the same time, we know that the Gospel is more than a stark reality, and Christ's death on the cross gives us reason to rejoice and sing, while at all times remembering and confessing our sinful nature that put Him there. Both styles of music have their place, just as there are many types of hymns for many different occasions :) . Also, beautiful singing; it's good that the rest of the internet can finally hear what proper Lutheran music sounds like ;)

Very beautiful hymn. Do you know who an when composed this hymn and it's music? I am a Catholic but I like some Lutheran hymns. The one I like the most is Jesu meines lebens leben (unfortunately I've listened this only in German). Thanks for your information.
I added information about the tune to the video description. The tune is called "O Mein Jesu, Ich Muss Sterben." It is from Geistliche Volkslieder, Paderborn (1850), and the arrangement I played here is by Paul G. Bunjes.
